Descripción: London: Macmillan and Company, 1937-39, 1937. 35 volumes, large octavo. Original full russet niger morocco by James Burn & Co. for Macmillan, spines lettered in gilt within raised bands, double gilt rule to covers, top edges gilt on the rough, other edges uncut as issued, marbled endpapers, twin gilt and blind rules to turn-ins, printed on handmade paper, the first sheet of each signature bearing a Ganesha watermark. Housed in the yellow card slipcases. Spines very lightly sunned, contents clean and bright, a beautiful set in fine condition in the rubbed and a little scuffed slipcases with occasional short closed tears to joints, nine of which neatly repaired. The Sussex Edition, number 14 of 525 sets signed by the author in volume I, this set in notably attractive condition. In his last years Kipling gathered existing material to create "this great retrospective work. the Sussex Edition of his works, undertaken by Macmillan as a monument to one of the firm's most profitable authors" (The Letters, p. 231). "The idea for the edition went back to 1928 and work was begun by 1930. The selection, fuller than that of any other edition, was the work of Kipling, and he saw the proofs of at least 21 of the edition's 35 volumes before his death. Set in Bembo type on hand-made paper, bound in Nigerian goatskin, and limited to 525 sets, the Sussex Edition did not begin publication until 1937; sales were slow in those depression years, and a large number of the unbound sheets lying in a London warehouse was destroyed by German bombs. One result of this exaggerated scarcity is that the Sussex Edition is now among the most prized and most expensive of all modern editions" (ibid.). Though the edition was published posthumously, Kipling had signed the limitation sheets prior to his death on 18 January 1936. Richards D23; Stewart pp. 577-80; The Letters of Rudyard Kipling, 1931-36 (2004). Nº de ref. del artículo: 143836

(thick), Volume 1: half-title with small red bull design in colors, dedication page with limitation and with the publisher's signature on the reverse of the dedication page; watercolor illustration of a red bull, signed in ink by Schmied; second half-title; title-page printed in red, black and gray with Plus Haut design. Text: pp. [9]-[268] + [1] p. list of illustrations. With 8 heading illustrations & 8 full-page, both in colors, as well as tail-pieces, etc. Volume 2: half-title with small design of red bull; half-title; title-page printed in red, black and gray with Plus Haut design. Text: pp. [5]-[264] + [1]p. list of illustrations + printer's colophon leaf with design. 7 heading illustrations & 6 full-page, both in colors, and tail-pieces, etc. The text is in French. Bound in full, dark green morocco leather (the spines have faded to light brown), with the author's name and title and illustrator's name gilt on the spine, with one or two white dots on each spine for the volume numbers. The front and back covers of each volume feature a circular, concentric design, which is formed of two cut-out, leather-covered forms which are mounted in a circular cut-out well, lined with a white plastic material. The circular cut-out forms display the title: KIM in gilt letters and gilt dots. The central form bears a gilt sunburst type design formed of small dots, around a larger gilt dot; these are repeated in each corner of the front and back covers. The mounted title form on the back covers does not display the lettered word Kim, but does have the sunburst design on the central form; multicolored, sewn headbands; inner leather turn-ins with green slik endpapers, and green, brown and gold marbled flyleaves. The binding is unsigned, but possibly designed by Schmied, who also used Crette and Dunand to design and execute bindings for his books; the design also seems to echo some of Paul Bonet's early work, in the use of the circular forms with lettering. The spines show fading and some rubbing to the leather surfaces of the spines, spine ends, outer hinges. In dark green & gold-flecked paper-covered slipcases, with brown morocco leather facings. The slipcase for volume one shows splitting, which has been covered with green cloth tape at some point to reinforce the edges. Weight: 15 lbs. Postage is extra on this item. Ward Ritchie: "Art Deco: The Books of Francois-Louis Schmied" (1987), # 32; page 37. (French text). Seller Inventory # F-114. Nº de ref. del artículo: F-114

Descripción: [East Hampton, NY], 2013. Unique artist's book, hand painted on Rives BFK paper, by Barry McCallion, signed and dated by the artist on the titlepage, "Barry McCallion, 2013." Page size: 7-1/2 x 5-3/4 inches: 96pp. (48 of text and 48 of full-page original art). Bound by Rhonda Miller: hand-sewn full tan limp leather with closure simulating the pocket diary style of notebook manufactured in the late 19th century, the time in which Kipling's novel is set; housed in tan linen clamshell box with image of elephant on green ground within red circle by Barry McCallion, label printed in black with title and signed by the artist on the spine, box executed by Joelle Webber at the Mermaid Bindery. Using India inks and Winsor Newton colored inks, the artist, Barry McCallion, has created a non-verbal text for one of the main themes of the novel: the Lama's quest to free himself from the Wheel of Things by finding the legendary "River of the Arrow." Set against the backdrop of "The Great Game" (conflict between Russia and Britain in Central Asia) with espionage and intrigue as important an element as the backdrop of India itself, KIM is a classic novel. Barry McCallion has altered text pages, selected for their references to the spiritual quest that the Lama and Kim undertake, highlighting the text in green and outlining appropriate passages in red outline (the Red Bull on the green field). The full page images on each verso are all a circle within a square, starting with a single silver-gilt dot. The paintings become more and more complicated, and colorful, as the "quest" for the River of the Arrow progresses. Overturned bowls of food, ignited matches, fruit, leaves, chairs, all make their way towards the boundaries of the circle, which becomes more frenzied and intense with each page, With lines and circles within the red circle, one can almost see a clock, marking the passage of time, Finally, the last image is complete within a red border - "the River of the Arrow is here.". Descripción: Charles Scribner?s Sons 1909, 1911, 1917, 1919, 1920., New York, 1909. Edition : New York, Original publisher?s black ½ morocco with light blue marble boards, spine in six compartments of raised bands and gilt floral motifs, gilt text in two and three, top edges gilt, edges uncut (occasionally unopened), endpapers marbled. , The later volumes (vols XXVI, XXVII, & XXVIII) are published in purple and dark blue boards. The ?Outward Bound? edition was published in installments between 1897 until the end of Kipling?s life in 1936. The complete set eventually included 36 volumes; however, variations appeared in the printing over the years. Text published in two volumes in earlier printings was combined into single volumes to save money on the part of the publishers. The published letters of Rudyard Kipling (2004) indicate that Kipling often disapproved of the cost-saving measures of Scribner?s, preferring that later printings kept the same numeration of the volumes as the earlier ones. , Size : 8vo. , Each volume with a frontispiece, several illustrative plates throughout., Volume : 27 volumes (of 36). Lacks Part One of ?From Sea to Sea? (Volume XV), otherwise a very fine set, text and plates are clean and crisp and bound in handsome period binding. Nº de ref. del artículo: B3715
