Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. "Thirteenth Impression" stated to copyright page, and DJ front panel agrees "Thirteenth Printing." NOT price-clipped; original $3.95 price showing. Someone has used a "Magic Marker" to black our four words in blue ballpoint to top of FFE. Bottom edges considerably shelf-worn but interior text block clean & very nice. This copy bears the hand-written name "Harper Lee" to title page. (PLEASE READ FOLLOWING PROVENANCE:) This book belonged to Edna L. Bowling, who ran for public office in Alabama four times in the 1970s and '80s on the minority "Prohibition" party ticket, capturing from 1.1 to 1.6 percent of the vote in her races for Congressional District 6 in 1972 and for Lt. Governor in 1974 and 1978. She fared best in her final race, for Secretary of State, in 1982, when she captured 5 percent of the vote, presumably a protest against Democrat Don Siegelman, who won the seat with 81 percent. Jim Bowling of Dallas, Texas, who sold us this copy, writes: "I was the executor of my grandmother, Edna L Bowling's estate. Most of her books passed to me. She lived in West End, Alabama and was an independent woman who successfully competed in a man's world. She was not famous but well known, since she ran for Governor (sic) several times. She sold encyclopedia's for 30 years. As a former school teacher, she wood go into small towns in Alabama, get to know the educators, city leaders and ask about students in need. She would usually stay in a small town several weeks at a time. She met Mrs. Lee in Monroeville, Alabama and she signed book on a later visit." Comparison Harper Lee signatures are readily available Online. As we claim no special expertise in Harper Lee signatures, prospective buyers are advised to make their own comparisons. (Our fifth and final scan has been artificially darkened to better bring out the signature.) The 1962 film -- screenplay by Horton Foote -- starred Gregory Peck, Robert Duvall, and Mary Badham as Scout. 296 pp. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. 53rd Printing. 296 pages. A later printing flat-signed (without inscription) by Harper Lee on the title page. Provenance: purchased in August 2024 from a retired chaplain and dean of students at Yale University Divinity School. He described his acquisition of the autographed book at the time of our transaction "I was in Monroeville, Alabama, and purchased the copy of To Kill a Mockingbird with Harper Lee's signature in late April of 1993. I went to Monroeville that day simply to see the home town of Harper Lee and the setting of my favorite American novel. I visited Montgomery just before and after my day trip to Monroeville--all a part of my six weeks in Birmingham researching the life of The Rev. Dr. John Porter, pastor of Sixth Avenue Baptist Church, on whom I was writing a dissertation. I was in Monroeville for several hours, but not longer--it is a very small town. I did not take a photo of the gas station-convenience store where I purchased the book, unfortunately. It was very near Harper Lee's sister's home. The convenience store was unremarkable in every way, except that it had a shelf of To Kill a Mockingbird books signed in black felt tip pen by Harper Lee." The photos he did take included a sign outside the courthouse, announcing ticket sales for the performance of the play based on the novel; the town's water tower; the home of Harper Lee's sister" Those photos are attached to this listing. The book is an unread copy in virtually as-new condition. It is clean, bright, and tight--with a scattering of foxing limited to the edges of the textblock, The dust jacket almost as new: clean, bright, and crisp--with light foxing along the fold of the rear flap and faint toning on the verso. Harper Lee's signature is bold and unfaded. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. SIGNED. Book.

First printing of the 40th Anniversary Edition of To Kill A Mockingbird, originally published in 1960. Harper Lee's account of racial politics in a sleepy Alabama town, told from the perspective of a quick-tempered young girl, won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize for fiction: "Scout, simply by the nature of the work, every lawyer gets at least one case in his lifetime that affects him personally. This one's mine, I guess. You might hear some ugly talk about it at school, but do one thing for me if you will: you just hold your head high and keep those fists down." An immediate bestseller, To Kill A Mockingbird has remained in print ever since its first publication; in 1999, it was voted "Best Novel of the Century" in a poll by Library Journal. In Lee's lifetime, her publisher issued special editions to mark the 35th, 40th, and 50th anniversaries of the novel. This is the 40th Anniversary edition, signed by Lee in blue ink on the half-title. A near-fine signed copy. Single volume, measuring 8 x 5.25 inches: [10], 323, [1]. Original dark grey paper boards stamped in silver and blind, terracotta endpapers, foreedge untrimmed. Original unclipped color pictorial dust jacket. Signed by Harper Lee on half-title. Lightest sunning to jacket spine panel.

First edition of one of the most important American novels of the 20th century which had an initial first printing of 5,000 copies and went on to earn Harper Lee the 1961 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. Octavo, original half cloth. With an autograph postcard signed by and entirely in the hand of Harper Lee laid in. Addressed to Stewart Richardson, Executive Editor of Doubleday & Company, the postcard reads in full, "Monroeville, Ala. September 5, 1970 Dear Sandy: No, I didn't receive galleys on James Purdy's - but I'd like to. They're probably sitting in New York somewhere. I'll be back by the first of October, but if you need a quote before then, please send galleys to Monroeville, zip 36460. Best, Nelle." Following the publication of To Kill a Mockingbird in 1960, Lee became increasingly reclusive, granting almost no requests for interviews or public appearances and, with the exception of a few short essays, publishing nothing further until 2015. 40 years, she lived part-time at 433 East 82nd Street in Manhattan, near her childhood friend Truman Capote, but tensions grew between them with the publication of Capote's In Cold Blood and his growing penchant for a decadent lifestyle, which contrasted with Lee's preference for a quiet, more anonymous existence. At the time of this correspondence with Doubleday, Lee had begun to spend more time in Monroeville, where she had assumed significant care responsibilities for her aging father. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Jacket design by Shirley Smith. Author photograph by Truman Capote. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box made by the Harcourt Bindery. Four years after the publication of To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee remarked, "I never expected any sort of success with Mockingbird. I was hoping for a quick and merciful death at the hands of the reviewers, but at the same time I sort of hoped someone would like it enough to give me encouragement. Public encouragement. I hoped for a little, as I said, but I got rather a whole lot, and in some ways this was just about as frightening as the quick, merciful death I'd expected." Based on Lee's experiences growing up in the Deep South, the primary themes of the novel involve racial injustice and the destruction of innocence with Atticus Finch, the narrator's father, serving as a moral hero for many readers and as a model of integrity for lawyers. The story, told by the six-year-old Jean Louise "Scout" Finch, takes place between 1933 and 35 and follows the story of a local black man, Tom Robinson, who has been accused of raping a young white woman. Appointed to defend him, Atticus Finch establishes Robinson's innocence and a devious plot to convict him by a local white couple. Despite her editors' warnings that the book might not sell well, it quickly became a sensation, bringing acclaim to Lee in literary circles, in her hometown of Monroeville, and throughout Alabama. The New Yorker declared it "skilled, unpretentious, and totally ingenious". It has gone on to become of the best-loved classics of all time and has been translated into more than forty languages selling more than forty million copies worldwide.

First edition of perhaps the most important American novel of the 20th century, inscribed by Harper Lee to a close college friend and with a scarce archive of drawings and letters exchanged between the two. Octavo, original green cloth backed brown boards, titles to spine in gilt. Association copy, inscribed by Harper Lee to close University of Alabama college friend, Charles Weldon Carruth, "To my dear friend Charles, with love always â" Harper Lee." In the fall term of 1945, Lee and Carruth both enrolled in a Shakespeare course taught by one of the University of Alabama's most famous faculty members, Hudson Strode, who directed the school's theatre troupe and taught several courses in theatre and creative-writing. At the University of Alabama, Lee contributed a regular column to the campus newspaper, 'Caustic Comments for Crimson White', as well as many articles to the universityâs humor magazine, Rammer Jammer, of which she became editor in chief in 1946. Lee ultimately dropped out of college before graduation and moved to Manhattan in 1949 to pursue writing as a career; Carruth later moved to New York City as well, where he worked as a radio producer before becoming a writer and editor for the Catholic News. Near fine in the rare first-issue dust jacket which is in very good condition. Accompanied by an exceptionally rare archive of pencil and ink drawings sketched by Lee of Carruth, caricatures drawn by her while attending Strode's Shakespeare courses, an original acrylic portrait by Lee of Carruth inscribed by her on the verso "From Nelle Lee, Dec 25, 1952", and three letters written by Lee to Carruth regarding her thoughts on her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama. Measuring 8 inches by 10 inches on ruled sheets of paper, the 11 drawings, four of which are signed by Lee "NLee", include 5 realist studies of Carruth in various poses and six captioned caricatures in ink depicting him as Shakespearean leads including: a portrayal of Shylock as a pawn shop owner and "Money Lender Extraordinaire: Easy Loans - Pound of Flesh Compounded Semi-Annually", King Lear standing on the cliffs of Dover with a price tag (â$3.98â) hanging from his cloak, Hamlet standing on a diving board with Yorickâs skull and a bloody knife hidden behind his back (performed at the "Old Vic"), Julius Caesar smoking a pipe while âcontemplating the infiniteâ; Othello towering over an angel and devil; Cassius dripping dry outside the Roman baths where âyou must have a ticket before you batheâ, Malvolio, âthe impatient one,â crossing his legs while âwaiting to go to the jakesâ, and Carruth dressed as an unidentified female character with Carruth's note, "Fall Quarter/ Univ. Ala 1945". Additionally included is a caricature of Professor Strode wearing the breeches and curly-toed shoes of a court jester with his book "Timeless Mexico" in one hand and Yorick's skull in the other, signed "Nelle Lee" and dated "11/8/45. Showcasing not only the depth, but also the length of Lee and Carruth's friendship, the three letters include a letter written by Lee to Carruth in 1991 regarding his retirement, "My beloved Charlie, I can't think of anyone to whom these words apply more â" in your work, in your life â" 'Well done, thou good and faithful servant.' .You are one of the most special people to me, and you have meant so much to my life." Two years later, in January 1993, the second letter thanks him for a ".lovely Christmas remembrance and, farther back, your memoir of Winston County [Alabama, where Carruth was born]." Despairing the changes occurring in her hometown, she continues, "You remember the Faulknerian prophecy â" the Snopeses shall inherit the earth? They've already taken over Monroeville . they are trying to turn Harper Lee into a tourist attraction like Graceland or Elvis." She goes on to discuss the restoration of the Old Courthouse, and remarks that she ânearly had a fitâ after seeing a billboard featuring a mockingbird, describing it as âin indescribable tasteâ and âa fraud on the publicâ. "[They] say they are doing this to honor me. What they are doing . [is] embarrassing me beyond endurance . So keep an eye out for a small place that will hold 10,000 books . is near grocery stores & hospitals, and you! . We can look at each other and celebrate our longevity." Signed by LeeÂas the Queen Victoria,Â"Your unamused but loving, Victoria R & I." Lee often gave herself nicknames when signing letters: âFrancesca da Rimini,â one of Danteâs damned, when she felt hopeless; âE. Bouverie Pusey,â the Anglican theologian, when she got worked up about some finer points of theology; and âVictoria R/Iââ"the Queen Empress Victoriaâ"when she felt royal and moody. A remarkable collection offering unprecedented insight into the education, broad talents, unique sense of humor, and deep personal thoughts regarding the reception of the most important work of one of America's most respected and enigmatic writers.
