SECOND EDITION, [ONE OF 500 COPIES], frontispiece and tailpiece woodcuts by Vanessa Bell, pencilled ownership inscription of Barbara Bagenal to title-page (see below), pp. [14], crown 8vo, original wrappers of hand-painted paper, printed label to front, the covers heavily chipped and the front cover off (the rear cover just holding), poor. Though in poor condition, the work is scarce and this copy has notable provenance: Barbara Bagenal (née Hiles) was a member of the Bloomsbury Group - an artist, most closely associated with Carrington (with whom she attended Slade). She helped the Woolfs in the early years of their printing. (Woolmer 7; Kirkpatrick A3b).

Condición: Very Good. second Edition. Woodcuts by Vanessa Bell. Second edition. One of 500 copies, printed for the Hogarth Press by Richard Madley. Original black wrappers hand-painted in royal blue, chocolate brown, and orange. Some shallow chipping and tears to edges of wrappers, else bright and fresh, uncut pages. Overall, a lovely copy in the original fragile wrappers. Housed in a custom folding box. Kirkpatrick A3b. Woolmer 7. Kew Gardens is a short story that was heavily influenced by the post-Impressionist style of art that was adopted by members the Bloomsbury Group. It was first published separately in May 1919 by Leonard and Virginia s own Hogarth Press in an edition of 150 copies, bound in wallpaper wrappers which were supplied from Roger Fry s Omega Workshops. This second edition was produced one month later using similar hand-painted wrappers in an edition of 500. The third separate edition (1927) was also limited to 500 copies, some being signed by both Virginia and Vanessa Bell. "Kew Gardens" was included among other short stories in Monday or Tuesday (1921), and in A Haunted House, published posthumously in 1944.

First fully illustrated edition (third overall), signed by both Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell, not called for in the limitation, and scarce thus. It is hand-numbered by Virginia Woolf as number 143, from a limited edition of 500 copies. The collaboration between author and artist during its initial publication held a great personal importance to Woolf, who saw it as a means of "binding herself to her sister" (Willis, p. 31). Bell's designs for this edition occur on every page of text, acting as borders, punctuation, bridges, or disruptions into the type-set text. In contrast, the first and second editions of 1919 only had a frontispiece and finispiece by Bell, and she was not satisfied with them. This title was Virginia Woolf's third published book and one of her early shorter fictions, which "were less stories than theoretical expositions of the new form of fiction that she had come upon" (ODNB). Its unexpected success was "the most dramatic factor in the Woolfs' becoming significant commercial publishers" (Woolmer, p. xxiii). Sales dramatically increased following a review in the Times Literary Supplement hailing it as "a work of art. a thing of original and therefore strange beauty, with its own 'atmosphere,' its own vital force" (29 May 1919). Octavo. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in brown morocco, titles blocked to spine in cream, onlay to front board copied from the original decorated paper boards designed by Vanessa Bell, decorative endpapers based on designs by Vanessa Bell in loop and spot pattern, top edge gilt. Decorative floral frames throughout the text by Vanessa Bell. Title page printed in brown. Printed on rectos only. The occasional minor blemish, an excellent copy finely bound.
