Grazie a queste numerose istituzioni 'la Carita' appresta opportuni rimedi all'ignoranza e al vizio che tanto affliggono le umane societa' [.] Notammo che l'istruzione dell'intelletto sola non basta: vi vuole anche l'educazione che formi il cuore. E a lode del vero le nostre pie istituzioni tutte si danno di cio' carico [.] Esse pongono innanzi tutto la cognizione del catechismo, de' doveri e delle pratiche religiose [.] Ben pero' possiamo dire che alcune iniquita', che indicano grande depravazione di cuore e irreligione, o sono affatto sconosciute o rare fra noi. A cagion d'esempio l'infame uso del duello [.] neppur si nomina in Roma. I suicidi, che sono altrove frequentissimi, [.] sono radi in Roma, e quando pure accadono, sono piuttosto di forastieri che di romani. Vedremo ancora che nel numero degli esposti, che sono insieme effetto d'immoralita' e di miseria, noi siamo molto inferiori ad altri popoli, che pur si reputano istruiti e gentili'. ITA.
