Penned by Constant Pierre, born Constant-Victor-Desire Pierre in Passy, near Paris, and his Wikipedia entry notes his having "entered the Conservatoire de Paris in 1878 and studied bassoon, winning certificates of merit in 1880 (second) and 1881 (first)." Eventually playing with the orchestras of the Folies Bergère, the Skating-Théâtre, and the Théâtre-Lyrique, later with the orchestras of the Folies-Dramatiques and the Theatre de la Renaissance, then the with the orchestras of the Opéra Comique, the Théâtre de l'Odeon, and the Comddie-Française, among others. A well published and influential musicologist, and earned an award from "the Socidtd des Compositeurs in 1889 and the Bordin prize of the Institut de France in 1900 and 1905. Massively heavy, oversized volume, bound handsomely in printed, illustrated paper over boards, sunned and toned a bit of edges, bumped a bit of tips, spine head and foot, moderately foxed of edges all around, else remarkably tightly bound and clean and bright of interior. The author was Sous Chef du Secretariat du Conservatoire National de Musique. xiv + 1040 pp. 2 pages of errata are present. Printed buff boards, internally an unopened copy in fine condition.
