Nach Abbruch des Besuchs des Priesterseminars Ehingen/Donau studierte S. deutsche Philologie und Geschich…te an der Univ. Tübingen, wurde nach der Promotion 1840 Lehrer an der Privatschule seines Bruders Thomas S. in Winterthur und ließ sich 1843 als freier Schriftsteller in Stuttgart nieder. Er verfaßte politische Denkschriften (u.a. "Württemberg im Jahre 1844"), wurde 1848 als radikaler Demokrat in die württembergische Abgeordnetenkammer gewählt und nach dem Scheitern der Revolution zu15 Jahren Festungshaft verurteilt. S. floh 1849 in die Schweiz, war seit 1850 Privatdozent an der Univ. Zürich und erhielt 1860 eine Professur für Geschichte und Literatur am Zürcher Polytechnikum. Er veröffentlichte belletristische (u. a. "Novellenbuch", 10 Bde., 1873-77) sowie populäre historische und kulturhistorische Schriften (u.a. "Geschichte deutscher Kultur und Sitte", 3 Bde., 1852/53, (10) 1887).

Zur Herausgabe des vorliegenden Buches hat mich zunächst ein äußerlicher…Umstand veranlaßt. Mein Büchlein "Die Gekreuzigte" sollte im Laufe dieses Jahres in dritter Auflage gedruckt werden. Das brachte mich auf den Gedanken, dasselbe nicht wieder einzeln erscheinen zu lassen, sondern in einer Sammlung von Essays, worin verwandte Probleme behandelt sind. Um die Zahl dieser kulturgeschichtlichen Darstellungen auf vier zu bringen, wurde das Münstersche Wiedertäuferdrama aus meinem "Novellenbuch" herübergenommen, wohinein es, weil strenghistorisch gefaßt und durchgeführt, doch nicht recht paßte. Warum ich dem Buche den Gesamttitel "Größenwahn" gab, wird, hoff ich, aus dem "Präludium" wie aus den einzelnen Hauptstücken erhellen. Der Titelbeisatz "Vier Kapitel aus der Geschichte menschlicher Narrheit" - rührt davon her, daß die vier mitgeteilten Historien ursprünglich als Abschnitte einer von mir seit langem geplanten "Geschichte der menschlichen Narrheit" gedacht, entworfen und ausgeführt wurden. Man wird schon zugeben müssen, daß eine solche Geschichte nicht übel am Platze wäre zu einer Zeit, welche so wie die unsere von Schwindel, Selbstüberhebung und Dünkeltobsucht strotzt. Oktober 1817 in Rechberg-Hinterweiler; 21. November 1886 in Zürich, Schweiz) war ein deutscher Kulturhistoriker und Schriftsteller. . Von 1837 bis 1840 studierte er deutsche Philologie und Geschichte an der Universität Tübingen. Von 1840 bis 1843 war er Lehrer an der Privatschule für Taubstumme seines Bruders Ignaz Thomas Scherr in Winterthur und danach Schriftsteller in Stuttgart. Von 1848 bis 1849 war er Abgeordneter der Zweiten Kammer des württembergischen Landtags für Geislingen. Scherr musste nach der gescheiterten Revolution 1849 in die Schweiz fliehen, wo er sich habilitieren konnte und 1860 zum Ordinarius für Geschichte am Polytechnikum Zürich aufstieg. Von 1855 bis 1857 war er Chefredakteur des in Winterthur erscheinenden Landboten. Scherr legte eine Vielzahl kulturhistorischer Veröffentlichungen vor, von denen am einflussreichsten die Deutsche Kultur- und Sittengeschichte war. Daneben verfasste er auch Romane und Erzählungen.
