Condición: Very good plus. First printing. First edition of this valuable resource on Bacon, inscribed by the artist to the pioneering director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Thomas Hoving. Hoving was director of the Met for only a decade, but his impact was enormous. Widely credited with modernizing the institution, he created the Met's contemporary art department, introduced the gift shop to the museum, and mounted blockbuster exhibitions, such as King Tut as well as a major 1975 Francis Bacon exhibition - at the time his first major museum show in more than a decade and one in which Bacon arranged the exhibition per his own wishes. Hoving would later say of this exhibition: "[It was] stunning to watch what an artist does with his own works - totally different from what an exhibitor or a curator would've done." Hoving was an enormous champion of Bacon's work, once deaccessioning more than a dozen "routine Monets" in order to acquire one major work by the British painter. A tremendous association between these two hugely important art-world figures who each exercised a significant influence on the other. 11'' x 8''. Original stiff color pictorial wrappers. 128 pages, with 94 illustrations in black-and-white. Inscribed by Bacon on the half-title: "To Thomas Hoving / With Very best wishes / Francis Bacon." Toning to rear cover, touches of shelfwear overall. Some creasing to top of spine, likely from production. Overall, clean and sound.

Cloth in Illustrated Jacket. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. First American Edition. 128pp, 94 b&w illustrations + color cover. Originally issued in 1975, this landmark volume of David Sylvester's transcribed interviews with Francis Bacon is notable for the length, detail, and frankness in which the late, great artist discusses his history, influences, and working methods. A most handsome example of the hardbound Pantheon Books first American edition of this oft-reprinted document additionally bearing the BOLDLY SIGNED AND DATED PRESENTATION "To Donald / With My Affection / Francis Bacon / New York 15/3/75" in the year of publication in blue marker on the front pastedown showing some trivial brown spotting along the top and foredge. While this supposition cannot be confirmed, we are of the mind that given the warm inscription dating from the week the artist was in New York for the opening of his Marlborough Gallery-assisted exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, this originated from the library of Donald McKinney - the vice-president for seventeen years of Bacon's longtime New York dealers. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. Signed Presentation Copy from the Artist. Artist Monograph.
