Der Welterfolg Das andere Geschlecht (1949) gilt als ein Meilenstein der feministischen Literatur und machte sie zur bekanntesten Intellektuellen Frankreichs. Werk: Die Werke Hegels und die von Sören Kierkegaard, der den Willen über die Vernunft stellte und forderte, dass niemand in der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Menschen zu wissenschaftlich vorgehen dürfe, beeinflussten Simone de Beauvoirs Denken. Die Wissenschaft, die sich mit allgemeinen Erscheinungen befasst, kann Dinge nur von außen her beleuchten, sagte Kierkegaard. Ihre philosophischen Werke verbinden sich stark mit dem Sartre'schen Existentialismus. Simone de Beauvoir gilt auch als eine der Begründerinnen des Feminismus nach 1968.
