Descripción: Ballantine Books, New York, 1953. Hardcover. Condición: See description. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Dustjacket. 1st Edition. A lightly worn copy of the first hardcover edition, better than very good, with an earlier owner's namestamp to the front endpaper. Briefly inscribed by Bradbury on the half-title. The jacket is also better than very good, despite short closed tears, small losses at the front corners and the crown of the spine, and some unavoidable dust soiling. A book that can't help being pretty, and a copy that looks much nicer than it sounds. Signed by Author(s). Nº de ref. del artículo: 000023

Descripción: Ballantine Books, New York, 1953. Hardcover; 1st Printing. Condición: NF. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition.. 1st edition/1st printing, 1953 1st edition. From the collection of famous sci-fi book collector(s) Robert and Diane Yaspan. Signed and Inscribed by the author in red felt-tip pen on a large piece of white paper that is NOT a bookplate (instead a piece of letter-sized stationery trimmed to fit) pasted on the book's front pastedown: 'Mar - 1974 For Robert Yaspan - This copy of the regular trade edition of "451" signed by Ray Bradbury.' Mr. Bradbury was of course differentiati ng between the 1st hardback trade edition owned by Mr. Yaspen vs. the asbestos-covered limited edition issued at the same time. The book is bound in red cloth with yellow printing (Curry binding D, no priority). Straight, clean, tight book with no soiling and no handwriting other than the author's in it, with crisp, clean pages, and with just a mere touch of shelfwear to spine ends/corners and 2 small 'very' slightly darkened cloth areas at the bottom edge of the boards. The price intact ($2.50) dustjacket is clean and crisp with some of the usual fading of the red '451' on the spine (though still quite legible), and with some small, shallow edge chips and tears along its edges, primarily at spine ends, upper back edge and flap fold ends, none affecting any dustjacket lettering or the design (less than it looks like in our photos; there's some flash glare from the DJ protector). The dustjacket is entirely original - no restoration. It is now protected by a clear, removable dustjacket cover. The book is housed in a custom red cloth slipcase dating to the Yaspans in the 1970s that is in excellent condition. Very handsome presentation, and excellent provenance! Made into a very good movie in 1966 by Francois Truffaut, starring Julie Christie and Oskar Werner. This book is what really made Mr. Bradbury into a household name.; Signed by Author. Signed by Author(s). Nº de ref. del artículo: 9138

Descripción: Ballantine Books, New York, 1953. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. First trade edition. A Fine copy of the book, with a tiny bit of dust soiling to the top-edge of the closed page block, but otherwise perfect. In a bright, Near Fine dust jacket with one very small nick at the bottom of the front panel and with the red spine lettering one shade lightened, but with the original colors remarkably fresh and vivid. Most copies show little to no red color on the spine, this copy among the nicer examples we've seen.Bradbury's most famous work, about a dystopian future where books are banned - and burned. "Fahrenheit 451" appears on the New York Public Library's list of books of the century and won the 1954 American Academy of Letters Award in Arts and Literature. Though the book is thought to be a comment on the political culture and McCarthyism at the time of its publication, the work also grew out of a number of ideas and themes Bradbury had explored in a few of his earlier published short stories. The book would later be adapted into a 1966 film directed by Francois Truffaut, which was nominated for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. In a contemporary review in The Chicago Sunday Tribune, writer August Derleth called the book "a savage and shockingly prophetic view of one possible future way of life?compelling.". Descripción: Ballantine Books, NY, 1953. First edition. One of a likely 50 copies bound in red cloth, stamped in gold, intended for Bradbury's personal use. Card inscribed by the author laid in. Fahrenheit 451-the temperature at which paper burns-has long been regarded as a high point of the science fiction genre. Written in the peak of McCarthyism, it grapples with the consequences of censorship and the destruction of knowledge through a dystopian future in which books have been outlawed and "firemen" burn any they find. Ironically, the novel has faced repeated attempts to censor it by school boards and parents, and even the release of expurgated editions by Ballantine Books. This first edition includes two of Bradbury's short stories, The Playground and And the Rock Cried Out, which are absent in later printings. Minor soiling to lower board and head of text block, else a fine copy. Housed in custom clamshell box in red cloth with black leather spine label. (Barron 3-31; Pringle 8; Internet Speculative Fiction Database #262160). Nº de ref. del artículo: 27718

Descripción: Ballantine Books, NY, 1953. Mugnaini, Joseph Ilustrador. First Edition, first hardbound trade issue. Laid in to this copy is Joseph Mugnaini's original preliminary cover art for the novel, which Bradbury personally owned. The watercolor and sketch work features the same elongated human figure dressed in newspapers and surrounded by flames. Mugnaini collaborated with Bradbury to interpret and illustrate the covers and interiors of many of his works, including The October Country, A Medicine for Melancholy, and Twice 22. This, however, is his most famous piece, and this original artwork is entirely unique. Fahrenheit 451 has long been regarded as a high point of the science fiction genre. Written in the peak of McCarthyism, it grapples with the consequences of censorship and the destruction of knowledge. The novel has been celebrated since its first publication. In 1954 it won the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature, and in 2004 it was granted a 1954 Retro Hugo Award, one of only four Retro Hugos ever given. Bound in red cloth with yelow stamping (Currey binding D) with minimal edgewear. Both volume and dust jacket in very fine condition. (Barron 3-31; Pringle 8). Nº de ref. del artículo: 18461

Descripción: Ballantine Books, NY, 1953. Mugnaini, Joseph Ilustrador. First edition. One of 200 numbered copies bound in full asbestos and signed by the author. Bradbury's first and best-known novel, Fahrenheit 451-the temperature at which book paper ignites-envisions a dystopian world in which reading is considered a subversive activity and books are burned by "firemen" whose job it is to destroy rather than preserve. Montag, the novel's protagonist, is a fireman whose covert interest in literature and eventual rejection of his duties as a book-burner turn him into an enemy of the state. In the book's denouement, he joins a band of likeminded renegades who take it upon themselves to commit important literary texts to memory, where they cannot be burned. Two short stories, "The Playground" and "And the Rock Cried Out," which are absent in later printings, complete the volume. The history of Fahrenheit 451's presentation and marketing is an interesting one. Perhaps because Bradbury had gained notoriety as a short story writer, his publisher, Ballantine, packaged the novel with the two shorter pieces and sold the book as a collection, with quasi-misleading promotional copy on the dust jacket referring to the contents as "Wonderful stories," even though one of them was a full-length novel. Regardless of its classification, however, Fahrenheit 451 endures as a cherished work of American speculative fiction, one that to many readers transcends its genre.Faint discoloration to upper corners and two tiny nicks to the bottom of the spine do little to diminish the appeal of a book that has become increasingly difficult to find in acceptable condition, featuring what is arguably the most outrageous trade binding of the twentieth century. (Barron 3-31; Pringle 8). Nº de ref. del artículo: 18459
