In their 1989 nomination of Carver for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, the jury concluded, "The revival in recent years of the short story is attributable in great measure to Carver's mastery of the form." During his years of working at miscellaneous jobs, rearing children, and trying to write, Carver started abusing alcohol, & by his own admission, he gave up writing and took to full-time drinking. Carver began his "second life" and stopped drinking in 1977, with the help of Alcoholics Anonymous. While he continued to regularly smoke cannabis and later experimented with cocaine Carver believed he would have died of alcoholism at the age of 40 had he not overcome his drinking. This, his final (incomplete) collection of seven stories, titled "Elephant and Other Stories" was composed in the five years before his death & published in Britain in 1988. There was no equivalent American edition. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 124 pages. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Gift inscription in ink on front endpaper. Gilt titles spine. Quantity Available: 1. Añadir al carritoFirst edition, first printing. Original grey cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in the dustwrapper with lettering designed by Stephen Raw and a photographic portrait of Carver by Caroline Forbes to the rear panel. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm with just a little bumping at the spine tips, the cloth bright and fresh. The contents are clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly rubbed and creased dustwrapper, showing the merest fading to the spine. Not price-clipped (£9.95 net to the lower front flap). 'Elephant and Other Stories' was published on August 4, 1988, two days after Carver's death at the age of 50 (the first edition jacket copy describes, for the last time, the author as living in Washington State and New York). The book, the last to be put together by Carver himself, was only published as a separate volume in the UK, its contents having appeared in the US three months earlier as the "new" component of 'Where I'm Calling From: New and Selected Stories'. Hauntingly (and unusually for its author in being based on a historical figure), the final story in the collection, 'Errand', imagines the final days of Carver's beloved Chekhov, who died of tuberculosis aged 44. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.
