About this Item: London Rider & Co, 1927. 16th separate edition, 8vo., mild even age-toning throughout, original green cloth with decorative blocking and lettering in black, slight sunning to extremities, dust-jacket by E. R. Holloway priced 2/- to upper panel unlike later editions that were priced on the spine, browning to lower panel, some fraying and chipping to edges with slight loss but overall an unusually good, complete example. An uncommonly good example of a dust-jacket hard to find at all let alone complete to this degree. Rider had taken over the publishing of Dracula in 1912, with this particular edition released thirty years after the scarce and bibliographically notorious first edition of 1897, published by Archibald Constable. The jacket artwork by E.R. Holloway shows the infamous Count commencing his descent down the walls of Castle Dracula, an iconic image full of supernatural menace, while the image on the spine shows the castle in the distance and a bat flying toward the viewer. This edition came out shortly before the 1931 Universal studio production starring Bela Lugosi, and depicts a very different Count from the saturninely diabolic version the actor made so famous. Banned from a school in Texas in 1994 due to sexual references and undertones. Nº de ref. del artículo: 98732

About this Item: Westminster: Archibald Constable and Company, 1897., 1897. Hardcover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION FIRST ISSUE. 1 vol., text bulking to 27mm, blank final leaf (391/392), it does not contain the 16 page publisher's catalog but has the 8 page terminal catalogue mentioned below. Bound in the publisher's original red stamped yellow cloth, inner hinges starting, outer hinges fine, head and foot of spine rubbed with some minor loss, general overall handling but not as offensive as most copies, minor offsetting to endpapers, some spotting to upper edges of last few leaves otherwise internally clean and bright, small neat ownership signature on half-title, a GOOD completely unsophisticated copy of a notoriously difficult book to find that hasn't been mucked with. Rebound, restored, rebacked, relined, recased, and cleaned copies are the norm but this copy has survived, thankfully, eluding the re-storer. The first edition points for Dracula are complex but most experts agree that the earliest printing of Dracula was issued on thick paper, bulking 27mm, contained a blank final leaf (391/392), and no terminal publisher's advertisements. Later issues of the first edition were printed on thinner paper, contain an advertisement for "Shoulder of Shasta" on the rear flyleaf, and included a 16 page publisher's catalog. Richard Dalby, in his 1983 bibliography of Stoker, states that "later issues of the first edition carry an advertisement for The Shoulder of Shasta on the rear flyleaf [392]" and that the "publishers cannot confirm any other points regarding status of the first issue, nor the exact publishing date." In the revised and expanded version of his bibliography published in 2004, he incorporated a variant that contains the points of thicker paper, a blank final leaf, and an eight-page terminal catalogue beginning with an advertisement for The Amazing Marriage by George Meredith, ending with one for The Whitehall Shakespeare, which were published no later than 1896, and carrying no mention of Dracula. About this Item: London: Archibald Constable, 1897, 1897. First Edition; presumed first printing; undetermined issue (although often referred to, perhaps correctly, as the second), with four leaves of advertisements for books published no later than 1896. Apparently there were at least two printings, the second of which is on a coated stock and bulks noticeably thinner than the earlier one: the sheets, not counting advertisements or catalogues, bulk approximately 21 - 22 mm. v. 27 mm. The quality of that printing is obviously inferior. This copy is clearly that earlier printing (on thicker paper). The (presumed) two printings were bound and stamped identically. The earliest (as supposed noting those copies inscribed by the author on or prior to publication day, or with review blind-stamps) have no publisher's advertisements at all. Later issues may have one (if one page ads are integral that suggests a separate printing) or more pages of ads and catalogues, which defines them as 'issues' in that the printed sheets were bound on more than a single occasion by the publisher, as orders were received, or perhaps to advertise other publications. Given that the last leaf in this copy is blank (followed by separately printed bound-in publisher's advertisements), it appears likely that this copy is from the same, presumed earliest printing, as in those presentation or review copies. This is somewhat speculative, and while confident that this chronology is substantially correct, there may well have been multiple printings or as yet undiscovered complexities. To provoke further headaches for the bibliographically inclined, copies bound for the author's use or for review may not have been bound earlier than others, but rather prepared for this particular use and never actually issued to the book buying public. Publishers and authors had little incentive or reason to anticipate future bibliographical concerns, and their mostly unhelpful records reflect this attitude. This copy is in above average condition, slightly musty, and the cloth appears to have undergone some cleaning; the spine is a bit darkened; tiny tear at the very edge of the title page, and very light foxing; that said, overall, this is a very good copy, truly superior to its brethren; in a custom quarter-leather clamshell box. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted. Nº de ref. del artículo: 35242
