Publicado por England, [Douglas Cockerell / John William North], no year [c.]., 1910
Librería: Inanna Rare Books Ltd., Skibbereen, CORK, Irlanda
Libro Ejemplar firmado
Folio (34 cm wide x 42.5 cm high). 216 pages. Hardcover / Binding in full green morocco with lettering and Dante's head as bronze sculpture per inlet to front cover. Binding by Douglas Cockerell, signed "WHS", during his directorship of W.H.Smith & Son (1905 - 1914). The manuscript is on excellent paper, watermarked O.W.P. & A.C.L. [O.W. Paper & Arts Co. Ltd., established by English painter John William North (1842-1924) in 1895]. The binding rubbed and with some small damages, in need of some minor restoration but overall still very good. The interior, the paper and the artwork all in excellent condition besides one of the juxtaposed photographs (Filippina Lippo) removed from the manuscript with some residue of the photograph remaining and some of the photographs with some dogears and minimal discoloration. All the original artwork in spectacular and fresh condition. The manuscript is a spectacular find and the quality of its execution is of utmost interest for any lover of rare books, manuscripts and special bindings. The circle of Douglas Cockerell, his involvement in one of the most beautiful books ever printed: the Ashendene Press Dante, as well as Cockerell being the binder of this unique manuscript, the fantastic paper used for the manuscript by one of the idyllist movement's central figures, John William North, and the wonderful Dante - theme of the manuscript with illuminated poetry from the Divine Comedy and the unique style of collage art, lets us rightfully dream that the anonymous composer of the manuscript was an important or at least peripheral member to either the Arts and Crafts Movement, the Ashendene Press or it was someone who worked in the style of the calligraphy schools that were inspired by William Morris or even earlier epigones like Owen Jones. Sprache: english.

Encuadernación de tapa dura. Condición: Muy bien. 1ª Edición. Folio 2 Vol. 1870/72. Vol 1: XXVI pp., 232 pp. Index, 75 full-page engravings, Vol. II: Front cover in two-color 192 pp. 42 engravings, 190 pp. Index, 18 engravings. Bound in half brown calf, 4 raised bands, spine richly gilt. First Spanish edition of the Divine Comedy illustrated by Doré, highly esteemed by the singular imagination of the French artist, one of the most illustrious of his time. "Endowed with an almost neurotic, feverish fantasy, Doré translated into drawings things that perhaps he had not read more than above, and that is why they owe certain sensational deals to him, not to Dante, and he did not always know how to resist the temptation to turn the Divine Comedy into a magical and fantastic tale, as in the thirteenth canto of Hell, where it represents sinners turned into trees like trunks with human faces and limbs, a concept that is in stark contrast to Dante's. " - Volkmann. "Edition esteemed by Doré's plates, soon sold out.", Palau 68288.

Encuadernación de tapa dura. Condición: Muy bien. 1ª Edición. The lectures on The Divine Comedy, The Nightmare and The Thousand and One Nights were given on the 1st, the 15th and the 22nd of June. Buddhism, poetry and Kabbalah were dictated on July 6, 13 and 26, and Blindness on August 3. The theme of the sixth lecture was decided on vespers, because Borges gave up at the last moment to speak of the Gnostics of Alexandria, as had been announced. The seven constitute the most extensive lecture series offered by the author of El Aleph. When Borges gave the lectures he was in a period of poor health and depressed mood. His talks took recordings on tapes and, from them, material was taken to publish in seven special supplements of a Buenos Aires newspaper as many versions, with arbitrary cuts, errors of transcription and excess of errata. For 1979 Borges agreed to gather all the conferences in a single volume, subject to review the already published. Roy Batholomew was in charge of getting the published copies, saving the errata, correcting the errors of transcription, confronting the appointments, eliminating the phrases of an oral presentation and reading, finally, the result to Borges. Again and again, five, six and seven times he had to read each paragraph, each sentence, two or three times each conference, in order to correspond to the implacable responsibility of Borges to review and correct his writings. He removed many things, almost did not add anything, transformed everything, scrupulously respecting the original idea. The themes of the book are some of those that have fascinated Borges throughout his life. After the task and put the title of Seven nights, Borges said: "Not bad, it seems to me that on subjects that have so obsessed me, this book is my testament." Complete set.

Priv. // Private hardcover. The corners and edges of the covers, as well as the spines, are slightly worn. On the front cover of Volume 1, there are two superficial scratches, each 16cm long. However, overall, it is a good copy with only minor signs of use. The text is clean, and it comes from a non-smoking household. Francesco da Buti's commentary offers valuable contextual information, linguistic analysis, and historical references to help readers better understand Dante's complex and allegorical work. It sheds light on the meanings behind Dante's metaphors, symbolism, and theological concepts. Buti's commentary contributes to the ongoing scholarship and appreciation of Dante's masterpiece. The pages are slightly yellowed in places, consistent with their age. Dieses Exemplar stammt aus der Bibliothek von Peter Amelung (Württembergische Landesbibliothek Stuttgart). Sprache: Italienisch.
