" Long came to Fort Wayne in 1865, but his pre-Summit City life is worth mentioning. Born in 1842, both his parents died by the time he turned 10. He was bound out to a wealthy German farmer as a ``white slave'' but in 1862 joined the Union Army to fight in the Civil War. During his Army stint, another soldier taught him a $25 card trick which earned him $400 after the next payday. By then, gambling was in his blood. After coming to Fort Wayne, Long opened a restaurant and gambling house. Gambling was for a time profitable, but it left him penniless by 1877. Destitution turned Long off of alcohol and on to Christianity. He wrote a book called ``Mason Long, the Converted Gambler.'' He also made several evangelistic tours to promote his new-found faith - Kevin Leininger." Long also wrote SAVE THE GIRLS, which was another crusade of his. Long joined the 112th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry.

This book is a raw and unvarnished, first-hand account of the author's military service during the American Civil War, his struggle with addiction, and his eventual redemption. The author pulls no punches as he vividly describes some of the bloodiest battles of the war and the unimaginable horrors he witnessed. Yet even as he recounts the brutality and senseless loss, the author also paints a picture of intense camaraderie and brotherhood among the soldiers. After the war, the author battled alcohol addiction for many years before eventually finding sobriety through the Murphy cause and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This book offers a fascinating perspective on the brutality of the Civil War as well as powerful insights into the redemptive power of faith. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Covers are very clean and intact except for slight darkening (more noticeable along spine) and slight bumping and wear to corners and head and tail of spine. A Very Good copy. This is the autobiography of Mason Long (1842-1903) who wrote about his life in the hopes that he might guide younger men to live a life far different from his own. He hopes to prevent them from falling into a life of iniquity like he did. However, Long's story is also one of redemption as he eventually quit gambling, became a temperance advocate, and converted to Christianity. Long writes unsparingly about his earlier life plagued by gambling and drinking addictions and participation in criminal enterprises. He takes an unflinching approach in recounting several parts of his life in which he had run-ins with the law and experienced great hardships. Long was born in Luray, Ohio. His father and mother both passed away by the time he was 10 years old. Long was then bonded as a slave for seven years to a wealthy farmer in Medina County, Ohio. Long says he ascribes his criminal lifestyle in adulthood to his experience as a slave to this farmer. He was forced to clear land and work on a sugar plantation with no pay and only little clothes and boarding in exchange for his excruciating workload. Long was also not allowed to see his relatives when they visited, and he describes an instance in which he was whipped in punishment for speaking briefly to one of them. Long was supposed to go to school for two months each year, but he says that in all of his seven years of bondage, he was only permitted to attend school for three months. Long describes finally being freed from bondage at the age of 17. He then became a self-employed farmer and later served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was introduced to gambling during his time in the Army which he says was a common pastime among soldiers and officers. After the war, Long became a businessman and operated his own general store selling groceries and provisions in Fort Wayne, Indiana. However, Long's participation in various forms of gambling eventually turned into a gambling addiction. He also developed a drinking addiction after seeking help for an unknown ailment affecting his heart from a doctor who ended up prescribing him whiskey as "medicine." Long then describes how his grocery business financially fell under and that he began to operate a "variety theater" which he said was his biggest regret in his life because he felt these types of theaters and "concert halls" attracted the worst types of people and were rife with iniquity. Long then describes committing his life to drinking and gambling. He became an owner of a saloon and gambling room and made significant profits but subsequently squandered his earnings on gambling and alcohol. Due to excessive drinking, Long said that he experienced tremors and episodes of persistent hallucinations, two of which were of white mice crawling all over him and a renegade stampede of bulls in relentless pursuit after him. Curiosity prompted Long to attend a temperance meeting in Fort Wayne, and after much introspection, he eventually signed a temperance pledge (Francis Murphy pledge card). Thereafter, Long made efforts to improve his life, become temperate, and cut ties with the gambling business. He also converted to Christianity and became involved in the temperance movement. Long also provides a chapter warning younger men to not give into the temptation of gambling and relays many anecdotes of gamblers were died early and penniless; he says that gambling may appear promising at first but only leads to financial and personal ruin.
