Añadir al carritoFinely bound edition of Burgess' landmark novel. Octavo, bound in full morocco by the Harcourt Bindery, gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, gilt ruling to the front and rear panels, gilt inner dentelles stamp-signed by the Harcourt Bindery, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Boldly signed by Anthony Burgess on a page bound in. With an Afterword and glossary by Stanley Edgar Hyman. In fine condition. A Clockwork Orange is a nightmare vision of the future told in its own fantastically inventive lexicon, it has since become a classic of modern literature. Roald Dahl hailed it âA terrifying and marvelous book.â Inspired in part by an attack on Burgessâ pregnant wife, Burgessâ most famous novel is a âcompelling and often comic vision of the way violence comes to dominate the mindâ (Clute & Nicholls, 175). âThe most discussed aspect of this book is the slang Burgess created for his teenaged characters. Called ânadsat,â it combines Cockney slang with Russian⦠A Clockwork Orange serves as a forum for the discussion of the nature of language and the conflicts between free will and determinismâ (New York Public Library, Books of the Century, 164). The cinematic adaptation of Burgessâs haunting tale was accidental. Screenplay writer Terry Southern gave Stanley Kubrick a copy of the novel, but, as he was developing a Napoleon Bonaparteâ"related project, Kubrick put it aside. Soon afterward, however, the Bonaparte project was canceled and, sometime later, Kubrick happened upon the novel. It had an immediate impact. Of his enthusiasm for it, Kubrick said, âI was excited by everything about it: The plot, the ideas, the characters, and, of course, the language. The story functions, of course, on several levels: Political, sociological, philosophical, and, whatâs most important, on a dreamlike psychological-symbolic levelâ. Kubrick wrote a screenplay faithful to the novel, saying, âI think whatever Burgess had to say about the story was said in the book, but I did invent a few useful narrative ideas and reshape some of the scenes.â The film premiered in 1971 starring Malcolm McDowell with a memorable soundtrack composed by Walter Carlos. Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 greatest novels of the twentieth century and by TIME magazine as one of the 100 best English-languange novels since 1923.

Añadir al carritoOriginal LP of Stanley Kubrick's Clockwork Orange. Signed by Anthony Burgess on the front cover. In near fine condition. This is the first record we have seen signed by the creator of the classic novel. The soundtrack of A Clockwork Orange comprises classical music and electronic synthetic music composed by Wendy Carlos (then Walter Carlos). Some of the music is heard only as excerpts, e.g. Edward Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 (aka Land of Hope and Glory) ironically heralding a politician's appearance at the prison. The main theme is an electronic transcription of Henry Purcell's Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary, composed in 1695, for the procession of Queen Mary's cortà ge through London en route to Westminster Abbey. "March from 'A Clockwork Orange'" (based on the choral movement of the Ninth Symphony by Beethoven) was the first recorded song featuring a vocoder for the singing; synthpop bands often cite it as their inspiration. Neither the end credits nor the soundtrack album identify the orchestra playing the Ninth Symphony excerpts, however, in Alex's bedroom, there is a close-up of a microcassette tape labeled: Deutsche Grammophon â" Ludwig van Beethoven â" Symphonie Nr. 9 d-moll, op. 125 â" Berliner Philharmoniker â" Chor der St. Hedwigskathedrale â" Ferenc Fricsay â" Irmgard Seefried, Maureen Forrester, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Ernst Haefliger.
