To Garcia Márquez's displeasure, the publisher disregarded the cover art created by his friend and instead printed the front wrapper in a ship-and-flowers design. The wrappers were redesigned for later printings at the author's insistence. The first printing of 8,000 copies sold out within a week. The novel was soon translated into dozens of languages, appearing in English in 1970, to great international acclaim.
