Descripción: Little, Brown, Boston, 1951. First edition, first printing book in presumed second printing dust jacket. His first book and on all the lists of best books of the last century. Over 65 years after publication, it looks like Holden still has something to say to current readers. Dust jacket is priced $3.00 on front flap, as called for in the first printing. But as it's clearly been trimmed, we cannot definitively state it is a first printing jacket. Gilt on spine perished otherwise would be very good; in about very good dust jacket with spine ends chipped, red on spine toned to pink, and thin rubbed line on rear panel affecting portion of author photo. Housed in custom, molded clamshell case lettered in gilt on spine and with partial image from dust jacket embossed on front. ON ALL THE BEST-BOOKS LISTS. Nº de ref. del artículo: 55111

Descripción: Boston. Little, Brown & Company. 1951., 1951. Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. 1st Edition. First Edition with the statement "First Edition" on the copyright page. A lightly worn copy bound in woven black cloth and stamped faintly in gilt on the spine. The gold lettering has been virtually rubbed off. The book is clean and tight throughout. Internally, the paper is clean and creamy white. The black boards have been used as coasters on two occasions. There are two faint ring marks on on the bottom of the front boards and the other in the center of the rear boards. There is also a touch of water exposure to the top edges of the front and rear panels. The original dust jacket has the price of $3.00 at the top of the inside front panel; the iconic Lotte Jacobi photograph of J.D. Salinger graces the rear panel. The jacket has been restored by the Dragonfly Binders of RI. However, there remains some circular staining to the bottom of the front panel and heavy edge rubbing. While the restoration and recoloring of the paper at the top of the spine is expertly done, it is also noticeable. Overall a worn binding in a worn dustjacket, edge-rubbed and soiled. First Edition with the statement "First Edition" on the copyright page. Nº de ref. del artículo: 7093

Descripción: Boston Little, Brown and Company 1951, 1951. First edition and First Printing. 8vo, publisher s original black cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine and in the original dustjacket featuring Salinger s photo on rear cover credited to Lotte Jacobi and $3 price correctly positioned on front flap. 277 pp. A good and honest copy showing some use, but otherwise well preserved. The dustjacket with some evidence of age-wear at the extremities and with a chip at the bottom of the spine panel, the bottom of the dustjacket sometime trimmed slightly to clean the bottom edge. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING OF AN AMERICAN ICONIC WORK AND A 20TH CENTURY LITERARY CLASSIC. J.D. Salinger s first and still, most famous work. Salinger tapped into a common and necessary theme in American literature with his unhappy teenage character, Holden Caulfield, who runs away from his boarding school as part of his disgust with 'phoniness'. Caufield's feelings and the idiom in which he communicates them have made the book a symbol of purity and sensitivity to generations of readers and has insured that it will remain a particularly coveted title in modern literature. Descripción: Little, Brown and Company, 1951. Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition of Salinger's first and only novel, with the first-state dust-wrapper. Some wear to the extremities of the dust-wrapper and moderate even toning to the spine of the dust-wrapper. Price-clipped. Head and tail bumped, lower fore-corner bumped. A little cocked. With the ownership signature (in pencil) of M[orton] R. Goldsmith on the first free end-paper. Very good. The first-state dust-wrapper is marked by the cropping of the upper edge of Salinger's head in his author-photo on the rear of the dust-wrapper; in later printings, this was removed altogether. The Catcher in the Rye, Salinger's first and only novel, caused great waves upon its publication in the summer of 1951. It has been censored and excoriated for the salty language and sexual mores of its protagonist, Holden Caulfield; just as well, it is one of the best-selling books of the last century, and one of the most-widely read at school. Its dust-wrapper, which belongs to the instantly-recognized echelon of The Great Gatsby and Catch-22 (also taught widely at schools; can this be the common thread?), is here bright and rich. An indispensable part of any library of modern first editions. Morton Goldsmith with his wife Enid (née Frank; sister of author Waldo Frank) held a sort of artistic salon - notably attracting Boris Grigoriev, the Russian painter - in their home in Scarsdale, just north of New York City; Morton died in 1971, Enid in 1983. Descripción: Little Brown and Company, Boston, 1951. First edition of the author's first book. Octavo, original black cloth. Fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket with some rubbing and wear. The dust jacket is the correct first issue with the cropping of Salinger's head on the rear panel. Jacket design by Michael Mitchell. Photograph of Salinger by Lotte Jacobi. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Since his debut in 1951 as The Catcher In the Rye, Holden Caulfield has been synonymous with "cynical adolescent." Holden narrates the story of a couple of days in his sixteen-year-old life, just after he's been expelled from prep school, in a slang that sounds edgy even today and keeps this novel on banned book lists. It begins, "If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth. In the first place, that stuff bores me, and in the second place, my parents would have about two hemorrhages apiece if I told anything pretty personal about them.". Nº de ref. del artículo: 84678

The dust jacket is the correct first issue with the cropping of Salinger's head on the rear panel and the price on the front flap. Jacket design by Michael Mitchell. Photograph of Salinger by Lotte Jacobi. Nº de ref. del artículo: 112992

Descripción: Little, Brown and Company, 1951. Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Stated first edition; A beautiful copy of this masterpiece of 20th century literature, housed in a custom clamshell box. A very good plus book in a very good to near fine dust jacket. Publisher's black cloth with titles stamped in gold on the spine. Original dust jacket with Lotte Jacobi photo credit on the rear panel of the jacket and 3.00 price intact; this is the 2nd issue DJ with space between the top of the author's head and the top of the back panel and the $3.00 price on the front flap to the right of the "R" in "Catcher" (1st issue jackets the $ sign should line up with the shoulder of the "R".changed in later issues). The very good plus book is clean and tight with slightly faded lettering to the spine and crisp, white pages with only light spotting to the first few pages; the front board is slightly bowed and minor bumping is present on the bottom spine end. Some minor staining is present to the textblock edges. Housed in a very good to near fine dust jacket that shows mild shelf wear to the ends and edges with a small stain near the spine tail and a dark vertical tape stain to both flaps, presumably from a sleeve attachment of some kind. Overall, a clean, bright, tight, attractive copy of Salinger's classic. The Catcher in the Rye has been consistently listed as one of the best novels of the twentieth century and is now a part of PBS's Great American Read, further testifying to it's staying power as one of America's favorite novels. "If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth." Holden Caulfield. Nº de ref. del artículo: 140

Descripción: Little, Brown and Company, Boston, 1951. First edition. First issue of this enduring portrait of adolescent angst, a beautiful copy in a professionally restored dust jacket. Divisive since it was published (when James Stern famously mocked CATCHER in his NEW YORK TIMES review by writing in the voice of Haulden Caufield), Salinger's novel of a teen's adventures and alienations in New York City remains equally beloved and denounced. One of the most widely banned books ever published, it has been both scapegoated as a template for deranged gunman (like Mark David Chapman) and praised as a "perfect book" (Adam Gopnik). These tensions continue to drive its popularity and importance, and CATCHER regularly appears on the lists of the best novels of the 20th century. A nice copy of this controversial classic. 7.75'' x 5''. Original full black cloth, gilt-lettered spine. Original unclipped ($3.00) red pictorial dust jacket designed by Michael Mitchell. [6], 277, [1] pages. Faint residue from bookplate removed from endpaper, expert restoration to jacket. Near fine in very good plus jacket. Nº de ref. del artículo: 29293
