Descripción: Little, Brown and Company, Boston, 1951. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. First edition. Near fine in an age-toned, near very good, price-clipped second printing dustwrapper (as it came to us). A true first edition, presumably someone supplied a second printing jacket to the book at a relatively early date: this copy had been in a private collection for decades as it is. The second printing jacket is pretty much identical to the first printing jacket except that it is 3mm taller and the original $3.00 price on the front flap has been typographically reset (not an issue on this price-clipped copy). The distinction between the first and second printings is often avoided by dealers, and many copies are offered as original that have the second printing jacket. A reasonably attractive copy of Salinger's first book, a post-war highspot and one of the most widely read and beloved coming-of-age novels ever written. Burgess 99. Nº de ref. del artículo: 395569

Descripción: Boston. Little, Brown & Company. 1951., 1951. Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. 1st Edition. First Edition with the statement "First Edition" on the copyright page. A lightly worn copy bound in woven black cloth and stamped faintly in gilt on the spine. The gold lettering has been virtually rubbed off. The book is clean and tight throughout. Internally, the paper is clean and creamy white. The black boards have been used as coasters on two occasions. There are two faint ring marks on on the bottom of the front boards and the other in the center of the rear boards. There is also a touch of water exposure to the top edges of the front and rear panels. The original dust jacket has the price of $3.00 at the top of the inside front panel; the iconic Lotte Jacobi photograph of J.D. Salinger graces the rear panel. The jacket has been restored by the Dragonfly Binders of RI. However, there remains some circular staining to the bottom of the front panel and heavy edge rubbing. While the restoration and recoloring of the paper at the top of the spine is expertly done, it is also noticeable. Overall a worn binding in a worn dustjacket, edge-rubbed and soiled. First Edition with the statement "First Edition" on the copyright page. Nº de ref. del artículo: 7093

Descripción: Boston. Little, Brown & Company. 1951., 1951. First Edition with the statement "First Edition" on the copyright page. A very handsome copy bound in woven black cloth and stamped brightly in gilt on the spine. The book is very clean and tight throughout, perhaps unread. The black boards have been exposed to a few flecks of water at some point which have left a few faint, light spots on the front boards. There is also a touch of water exposure to 3" at the top left-hand corner of the rear boards. Internally, the paper is clean, creamy white and untouched. The complete dustjacket has the price of $3.00 at the top of the inside front panel and the iconic Lotte Jacobi photograph of J.D. Salinger on the rear panel. Above the $3.00 price someone has printed in small letters lightly in ink "copy #2." The front panel with the carousel horse is quite bright and very striking. The dustjacket measures 8 3/8" while the book measures 8", indicating that the jacket is most likely from a later 1951 printing. The jacket has some light striations on the rear panel and a few flecks around Salinger's chin and forehead. Overall, a very attractive copy of this classic. First Edition with the statement "First Edition" on the copyright page. Nº de ref. del artículo: 7092

Descripción: Boston Little, Brown and Company 1951, 1951. First edition and First Printing. 8vo, publisher’s original black cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine and in the original dustjacket featuring Salinger’s photo on rear cover credited to Lotte Jacobi and $3 price correctly positioned on front flap. 277 pp. A good and honest copy showing some use, but otherwise well preserved. The dustjacket with some evidence of age-wear at the extremities and with a chip at the bottom of the spine panel, the bottom of the dustjacket sometime trimmed slightly to clean the bottom edge. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING OF AN AMERICAN ICONIC WORK AND A 20TH CENTURY LITERARY CLASSIC. J.D. Salinger’s first and still, most famous work. Salinger tapped into a common and necessary theme in American literature with his unhappy teenage character, Holden Caulfield, who runs away from his boarding school as part of his disgust with 'phoniness'. Caufield's feelings and the idiom in which he communicates them have made the book a symbol of purity and sensitivity to generations of readers and has insured that it will remain a particularly coveted title in modern literature. Descripción: Boston Little, Brown and Company 1951, 1951. First edition and first printing and in the first issue dustjacket. 8vo, publisher’s original black cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine. In the original dustjacket featuring Salinger’s photo on rear cover credited to Lotte Jacobi and $3 price correctly positioned on front flap. 277 pp. A well preserved copy, the black cloth with no fading and with the gilt bright, just some typical evidence of age or use, the text clean and fresh, an old unobtrusive crease to the lower corner section of the half-title, the scarce first issue jacket attractive with some inevitable edge-wear, a little bit of chipping, rubbing or mellowing and evidence of use. Descripción: Little, Brown and Company, Boston, 1951. Hardcover. Condición: Very good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very good. First Edition. In original first issue dust jacket, octavo size, 283 pp. J.D. (Jerome David) Salinger's (1919-2010) first and only novel, the Holden Caulfield book he'd worked on for nearly a decade. This novel was a bestseller in its time and is still considered one of the classics of American literature, it continues to sell about a quarter-million copies per year. It endures as talismanic to discontented youth and perfectly captures the voice of the author, reflecting his own troubled school days. "What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though." (N.B., quote from the Salinger.)___DESCRIPTION: Original black cloth covered boards with gilt lettering to backstrip, octavo size (8" by 5.5"), pagination: [i-vi] [1-2] 3-277, first edition, first printing, in original pictorial first issue dust jacket showing original price of $3.00, photo of author on back panel has the top of his head right at the top edge (no space).___CONDITION: A very good copy, the boards are clean and still a rich black hue, no sunning to backstrip with the gilt lettering still bright, very minimal shelfwear to the lower edges and only slightly bumped at lower corners, upper corners are straight; internally bright with only minimal age-toning to the outer edges and a few faint odd stains, endpapers with a few light stains, a square text block with solid hinges, no cocking to spine, and other than a small notation in ink at the top left of the verso of the rear free endpaper free of prior owner markings. The unclipped dust jacket is bright, the backstrip and covers are all of one tone with some light sunning to the upper approximately 2" of the front panel; the jacket has been lightly restored by a professional conservator (contact us for details or photos), the jacket is now near fine on the outside, with some toning inside; overall a very good copy in a very good jacket. An essential book for any collector of important American literature.___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Descripción: Little Brown and Company, Boston, 1951. First edition of the author's first book. Octavo, original black cloth. Fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket with some rubbing and wear. The dust jacket is the correct first issue with the cropping of Salinger's head on the rear panel. Jacket design by Michael Mitchell. Photograph of Salinger by Lotte Jacobi. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Since his debut in 1951 as The Catcher In the Rye, Holden Caulfield has been synonymous with "cynical adolescent." Holden narrates the story of a couple of days in his sixteen-year-old life, just after he's been expelled from prep school, in a slang that sounds edgy even today and keeps this novel on banned book lists. It begins, "If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth. In the first place, that stuff bores me, and in the second place, my parents would have about two hemorrhages apiece if I told anything pretty personal about them.". Nº de ref. del artículo: 84678

Descripción: Little Brown, Boston, 1951. File folder envelope hand-written and addressed by J.D. Salinger to fellow writer and friend Eli Waldron. The file folder was used as an envelope. Shipping and return address entirely in Salinger's hand. Return address is from Salinger's Vermont address and addressed to Mr. Eli Waldron. Postmarked 1965. The folder measures 12 inches by 9.5 inches. The recipient Eli Waldron was an American writer and journalist whose primary work consisted of short stories, essays, and poetry. His writings were published in literary journals (such as The Kenyon Review, Prairie Schooner, and Story) and popular periodicals (such as Collier's, Holiday, Rolling Stone, Saturday Evening Post). From the 1950s to 1970s he contributed stories and essays to The New Yorker, and in the 1960s and 1970s. Waldron moved to Charlton Street in New York City in 1947 and became part of a literary circle that included Hollis Alpert, Josephine Herbst, S. J. Perelman, and J. D. Salinger. Following the publication in July 1951, of his review of J. D. Salinger's novel The Catcher in the Rye, Salinger wrote his reviewer a warm note of thanks, adding: "I hope one day somebody writes with that much perception and feeling about a book of yours." With the copy of Catcher in the Rye, which was sent to Waldron. Since his debut in 1951 as The Catcher In the Rye, Holden Caulfield has been synonymous with "cynical adolescent."
