White letters on the cover and spine. Volumes I and II begin with photographs on the end papers and have no text. All are clean, tight volumes. This collection comes encased in the original box, in fine condition. William Eugene Smith has been called the master of the humanistic photographic essay. Born in 1918, his career took him through World War II, to Africa, to rural Spanish villages, and Haiti. Volumes I and II of this collection are filled with his images, whilst Volume III contains essays and text identifying, dating and describing the photographs. With a forward by Dr. Katherine Martinez and an introduction by William S. Johnson, this collection is a fine addition for anyone who appreciates the photo essay, by the photographer who was described by journalist Sean O' Hagan as being "perhaps the single most important American photographer in the development of [it]."
