A la fin du récital la résidence est soudain envahie par une troupe de guérilleros armés jusqu'aux dents. Ils exigent que le président leur soit remis. La prise d'otages est partie pour durer et dans la maison du vice-président il s'instaure un "modus vivendi" entre les guérilleros et leurs prisonniers. "Bel Canto" s'inspire librement de l'interminable prise d'otages à l'ambassade du Japon au Pérou voici quelques années. Et par la virtuosité d'Ann Patchett ce huis clos où évoluent des personnages d'horizons très différents séparés par les barrières de la langue et de la culture se transforme pour le lecteur ébloui en une fenêtre ouverte sur le monde.
