The lithographs by Andres Campillo and Hesiquio Iriarte depict Mexican trades from midwives and typsetters to cleaners and cowboys. Although inspired by the 1844 Los Espanoles pintados por si mismos printed in Madrid, the present work adds detailed backgrounds to its figures and includes many new styles. William S. Reese (1955-2018) was one of the great Americana booksellers. His firm continues to trade in New Haven. After his death, Christie's New York sold his private collection (24-25 May 2022; the present item was lot 231), which included many highlights of the field. Subjects of the scenes and birds-eye views include the Cathedral of Mexico, National Palace of Mexico, Plaza of Santo Domingo, Veracruz Railroad Station, Plaza of Guadalupe, Tacubaya, Toluca, Cathedral of Puebla, a bird's-eye view of Puebla, a view of Querétaro, the Cathedral at Guadalajara, and Guanajuato. While most of the lithographs in this album are by Gallice, many are by the celebrated Casimiro Castro, a Mexican painter, draftsman and lithographer and generally considered one of the greatest Mexican landscape artists and lithographers of the 19th century. "EARLIEST [MAP] OF THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS" (Howes) First edition in English, first published in Spanish in Philadelphia in 1836 with this map, and in Mexico and Paris in 1837. The map is a decidedly simple, sparse rendering focusing on the eastern boundary of Texas and the Gulf of Mexico only as far west as the Neches River. This bilingual edition contains correspondence relative to General Gaines military occupation of northeast Texas from the Sabine to Nacogdoches for the announced purpose of checking Indian depredations. It appears, however, that Gaines acted more at the request of Stephen F. Austin than U.S. Authorities as he remained at Nacodoches while the new Texas government became organized. This affair led to the breaking of diplomatic relations by Mexico with the U.S. Government. Before the Mexican envoy Gorostiza left the United States, be published a pamphlet in which he set forth his case and to which he appended certain documents relating to the affair. This pamphlet had the effect of further irritating the State Department and the situation became even more strained when later the Mexican government definitely approved this document and the actions of its Minister (Studies in history, economics, and public law, Volume 66. Columbia University. Faculty of Political Science, page 155). Born in Vera Cruz, Mexico and educated in Madrid, Spain, Manuel Eduardo de Gorostiza (1789-1851) was a dramatist and official in the Mexican government. Gorostiza entered the Spanish guard as a cadet in 1803 and left the service in 1814 at the rank of lieutenant colonel to devote his time to literary work. In 1823, he was banished to England, but returned to Mexico in 1833 where he was elected Deputy to the National Congress that same year. He went on to serve as Secretary of the Treasury in 1838, Secretary of Foreign Relations in 1839, and Envoy Extraordinary to the United States in 1844. During the Mexican-American War, Gorostiza fought in the Battle of Churubusco (1847). After the war, he became interested in education and was named director of the Mexican National Theatre. His dramatic works include Tal para Cual (1820), Las Costumbres de Antafio (1820), Don Dieguito (1820) and Contigo Pan y Cebolla (1833). Condición: Very good. Collection of seven Chinese gouache paintings on pith paper (sizes vary: ca. 300 x 220 mm, some blank areas in fragile pith paper cracked or with loss, not affecting gouache paintings -- SEE IMAGES), a few retaining their original blue silk border edges. Each painting is hinged onto stiff lig-free board (377 x 277 mm) utilizing existing (old) cloth hinges and very lightly tipped onto backing board using reversable adhesive; light-green vertical cloth "window" mattes, in front of which are protective mylar sheets, the entire ensemble preserved in a protective cloth case. FASCINATING COLLECTION OF SEVEN CHINESE GOUACHE PAINTINGS ON PITH PAPER OF PERUVIAN AND ARGENTINEAN "COSTUMBRISMO." Examples such as ours are not often seen on the market and due to their fragility, and are absent from many relevant museums and research libraries worldwide. Among the rarest and least studied 19th-century Cantonese export watercolors are those depicting South American costumbrisimo (or "tipos del pais," i.e. country types) depicting local inhabitants, costumes, and occupations. Lithographs by César Hipólito Bacle (1794-1838), Francisco Javier Cortés (1770-1841) and Francisco "Pancho" Fierro (1807-1879) were taken to Canton where the local artists produced the pith drawings that were sold into the export trade. Some of these were sent back to Chile and Argentina, but due to the often extreme heat and humidity (especially in Lima) the pith simply deteriorated. This practice is well described by Barbara Anderson, who writes that "[these] watercolors remind us that globalism was thriving long before the term was coined in this century. They represent an intriguing and charming, but as yet little understood branch of art that flourished worldwide in an era in which nations were attempting to define themselves in visual terms, to themselves as well as to outsiders." Though commerce between China and Peru and China and Argentina in the early nineteenth century has received scant attention, customs registers bear evidence of an intensive trade. During the nineteenth-century, legions of Chinese export artists assimilated Western iconography into syncretic pith paintings, and multiples and reproductions abounded. "Chinese artists were so adept that European observers noted with somewhat reluctant admiration that the Chinese will copy anything available to them." (Captistrano-Baker, p. 247). Furthermore, in some instances, "[they] are so well done that it is difficult to accept them as being from an oriental hand." (Crossman, p. 188) Our Chinese costumbrismo were executed in Canton either by the studio of Kuan Lien-ch'ang (a.k.a. Tingqua), or in the studio of Sunqua. Concerning the latter attribution: two of the paintings in our collection (specifically the "Gaucho Enlazando" and the "Duraznero") are practically identical to the pair that recently sold at Bonhams London on 8 June 2023, lot 152 (for the price of GBP 2,176 including buyer's premium), both attributed by Bonhams' experts to the Sunqua studio. The original exemplars for these were Bacle's famous lithographs of Argentinean costumes, the "Trages y costumbres de la Provincia de Buenos-Aires" published in six parts from 1833-1835 (NB: reproductions of the two lithographs are provided here for comparison purposes). In the bespoke 2023 Bonhams sale (lot 153) were two slightly inferior Chinese costumbrismo paintings, likewise attributed to the Sunqua studio, which realized GBP 1,280. Bonhams' attribution to the studio of Sunqua is tentative at best, as none of them are signed. We here draw attention to a collection of 36 Tingqua watercolors in the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division that strongly resemble ours in terms of composition and execution (LoC LOT P&P 4456). No. 25 in the LoC group depicts a Peruvian man holding a hat and walking stick; everything about the painting is strikingly similar to ours, save the difference in facial gestures: in our example the man has a faint smile, whereas LoC version depicts this same man is grimacing. Because the albums containing the LoC group bear Tingqua's signature, it stands to reason that our collection was executed in the Tingqua workshop, and the four Bonhams examples were (mis)attributed to the studio of Sunqua. The gouache of the "Tapada limeña" (a Peruvian woman in black Saya revealing just one eye) in our collection strongly resembles the one in the Victoria & Albert Museum. The V&A example is preserved in a three-volume set which contains, inter alia, 19th-century Chinese gouaches of costumes of Chile, Peru, and Manila (MSL/1984/27), some of which were copied after drawings by Filipino artist Damian Domingo (1796-1834). The Ayala Museum holds an album of thirty-one watercolors depicting Philippine peoples, costumes, and occupations, long (mis)attributed to Domingo; in fact, they are also Chinese copies, for which see Capistrano-Baker, p. 242). Nineteenth-century Chinese pith paintings are notoriously fragile; ours camed to us framed (evidently they had been preserved this way for decades) and were recently removed from their frames by us so that the objects could be seen in their entirety. The paintings are in REMARKABLY GOOD CONDITION, unlike other examples of Chinese "costumbrismo" that were reproduced in the "Lima to Canton and Beyond" blog (see infra). The subjects in the present collection are: 1. A negro priest holding a book (original exemplar unlocated); pith paper split in two places (not affecting painting); 2. A Franciscan friar in blue robes and gold belt (cordelier). Whereas the original exemplar is unlocated, there is a nearly identical example in the Wellcome Collection (581456i). Some insignificant blemishes; 3. An Argentinean peach vendor on horseback, executed after Bacle's "Trages y Costumbres de Buenos Aires" ("Durasnero"). Lower right corner of pith separated, two small holes (not affecting painting); 4. "Tapada limeña" (a Peruvian woman in black Saya revealing just one eye.

A RADICAL TEXTBOOK FOR NEWLY-INDEPENDENT LATIN AMERICANS. 2 vols in 2, 8vos. (4), 302 pp, (5); (2), 325 pp, (5). Bound in contemporary calf, spine gilt with red title label ("Manual Mejorada"). With contemporary ink stamp of the Sociedad de Amigos on verso of final leaf of Vol I, given as a mark of authenticity. Wormtrack affecting pastedown but hardly touching title-page of Vol I; otherwise a pleasant, unsophisticated copy in a contemporary Peruvian binding. Rare first American edition of this remarkable legal textbook composed specifically for use in the fledgling independent republics of Latin America during the first half of the 19th century. The text was printed for the first time in Paris in 1827, and the present edition is both its first printing anywhere in the Americas and its second appearance overall. OCLC shows just seven copies worldwide, four of them in the US (Yale, GW Law, LC, and Harvard). Little seems to be known of the author, but in his preface to the first edition, Ochoa rails against "political and religious despotism" and salutes "the individuals of all classes in these new republics who have risen as if by magic from the bosom of shame, seeing themselves elevated to the dignity of free men". Celebrating the loss of Spain s American dominions in the name of liberty and justice were evidently sentiments to which Ochoa could not publicly sign his name, and he is identified only by his initials on the title-page of both the Paris and Arequipa editions of the Manual. The Sociedad de Amigos who were responsible for adapting the work for Peru seem to have harbored the same anti-colonial, anti-clerical spirit. As far as we have traced, no direct comparison has ever been conducted between the Paris original and the present Peruvian corrected and improved edition. The latter text proves to be rife with footnotes added by the Sociedad de Amigos, distinguishable by their smaller font size. For example, on p. 38 a footnote declares that the age of majority in Peru has been proclaimed as 21, rather than 25 as in Spain; and on p. 43 we find a lengthy critical note: "Es muy ridiculo que dé al juramento la fuerza de confirmar y hacer valida una venta que antes no lo era; como si el que indujo á la mujer á enajenar la dote, no la induciria tambien á confirmar la enajenacion con juramento". On p. 23, strong emphasis is added on the separation of church and state in matrimonial affairs: "Las republicas de America no estan obligadas á admitir lo dispuesto por los Concilios, mas que en la parte de fe, costumbres y disciplina esencial." The present edition was printed in Arequipa, a city of major importance during Peru s struggles for independence. Although the north of the country had declared independence in 1821, Arequipa remained under Spanish control until the Battle of Ayacucho in 1824. The dedicatee, Antonio Gutiérrez de La Fuente (1796-1878), was a strong Bolivarist and the first governor of Arequipa following independence; in 1826, he briefly considered breaking away from the rest of the country but instead lead the movement to overthrow the government in Lima. * cf Palau y Dulcet 149727 (but this edition unrecorded); and cf eg. The narrative of Mawe is full of details regarding the geography of Brazil, its population and customs, plants and animals, as well as precise details of precious stones and their processing, a topic on which the author was an expert and on which he writes here for the first time. The book is important also for Argentina, because it has a chapter dedicated to a description of a trip by the author to Buenos Aires during crucial moments of independence, with an account of the Revolution of May, 1810, that tgformed the first argentinean government.

An important and beautiful presentation illustrating Mexico City and environs by the celebrated Casimiro Castro (among others) who was a Mexican painter, draftsman and lithographer. He is considered one of the greatest Mexican landscape artists and lithographers of the 19th century. In near fine condition, no former owner's names or marks. San Terenzo, 28 agosto 1910) è stato un fisiologo, antropologo, patriota e scrittore italiano. Fue uno dei primi divulgatori delle teorie darwiniane in Italia. Le sue ricerche contribuirono all'affermazione dell'antropologia intesa come storia naturale dell'uomo. Deputato dal 1865 al 1876 e senatore dal 16 novembre 1876 sotto il Regno d'Italia, si segnalò come avversario della legge sul macinato. Del Parlamento ebbe a dire che era: Il più alto laboratorio di forze disperse. Qui abbiamo la più alta perfezione di un meccanismo al rovescio, dove cioè quasi tutte le forze si trasformano in attriti". Medico fisiologo e neurologo, antropologo darwiniano, Paolo Mantegazza fu un instancabile organizzatore e divulgatore di cultura. Con il romanzo L'anno 3000: sogno (1897) è anche considerato uno dei precursori ottocenteschi della fantascienza italiana. Mantegazza vivió entonces en Milán y luego en Pavía, en cuya Facultad de Medicina fue profesor de Patología General, y donde fundó un laboratorio italiano de patología experimental. First edition. Two volumes, quarto, 22 x 16cm, pp [iii], 548; [ii], 572. [Palau 260053] Written by those who accompanied him, Fr. Antonio de Ciudad Real and Fr. Alonso de San Roman. Fray Alonso Ponce arrived in New Spain in 1584 with the title of Commissary General for the Franciscan Order in New Spain. From then until 1589 he traveled through the various Franciscan provinces from Guadalajara to Nicaragua, visiting friars and correcting abuses. His travels were generally on foot and involved many trials, including clashes with the Viceroy and eventual exile from the kingdom. The two friars who accompanied him as his secretaries noted down the incidents of his travels and observations about the various regions -- their flora and fauna , the roads and travelling conditions, etc. -- and the peoples that lived in them, doing this with great detail; their reports were apparently written as they travelled along, which gives them a particular note of veracity, as well as interest -- eyewitness testimonials. It is generally accepted that the two secretaries were Alonso de San Roman and Antonio de Ciudad Real. (This latter returned to New Spain and became the greatest Mayan linguist of his day. See Beristain under Ciudad Real.) The work is filled with first hand reports of life in New Spain at the end of the 16th century, including both historical and ethnological information.The Porrua Diccionario Historia etc., says of it: "Hay informaciones de primera vista, que ayudan a reconstruir la vida de aquellos tiempos y son de grata lectura." The introduction states: " Es un verdadero itinerario descriptivo de mas de dos mil leguas, importantisimo a nuestro parecer; pues en el, con gran sencillez y sin pretenciones de ningun genero, se describen las costumbres, traje y lengua de sus habitantes, se marca la distancia de unos pueblos o conventos a otros. y se dan curiosas noticias de algunas de las antiquedades de aquellas comarcas, asi como sus diferentes climas y cosechas." The narrative of Ponce's journey was first published in Madrid in 1873 from a manuscript of it in the possession of Mariano de Zabalburu. Two indices were later published for it -- an indication of the book's value: Sabin 63965 also refers to it as a 'valuable work." This copy is from the library of George McClelland Foster, Jr , who served as a professor of anthropology from 1953 to his retirement in 1979: the quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. A note-card from the executor of Foster's library has been laid in, and his stamp is on title: there are some occasional pencil marginalia. Bound in full Spanish tree-calf with gilt lettering to red and black spine labels. No copies at auction are recorded -- exceedingly rare in the market. A fine copy of this scarce book.

Bound in contemporary boards with green calf spine; gilt title on spine. Slight foxing to scattered leaves, otherwise very good. Extremely rare sole edition of this curious guide by a Catalan Riding Master with a lengthy, illustrated section entirely devoted to the art of women s horseback-riding. This unusual text perhaps sheds light on the growing popularity of recreational riding for women during the 19th century. Contrary to popular belief, however, the practice of riding side-saddle sometimes thought to preserve a woman s modesty was never widespread, and there is no mention of that technique in the present work. The frontispiece depicts each of the type of rider noted on the title-page: unmarried women (but señoras are also referred to in the text); gentlemen; and soldiers. Part II (pp. 135-201) is composed of specific instructions for ladies wishing to elegantly and modestly mount and dismount a horse. Pages 143-144 illustrate the best method involving a gentleman assistant, who gallantly cups his hands below her left foot; on pp. 152-153 we see a dismounting technique also involving the same. The text also includes directions for feminine attire while riding, and even the best technique for female riders attempting the physically punishing gallop (Cuarta leccion, pp. 185-201). This work comprises fourteen disertaciones taken by El Baron de Juras Reales from Cartas mejicanas of his uncle, Benito Maria Moxó y de Francoli (1763,1816). A valuable set of dissertations upon the natives and history of the New World, written by Don Benito Maria de Moxó, Archbishop of Charcas, whose papers fell into the hands of his nephew, and were printed by the latter under his own name without sufficient acknowledgement. Juras Reales was a Spanish official who was captured byf the Patriots, and underwent six years imprisonment in South America aftenr the Revolution (Sabin). There is much information on the Mexican Indians, particularly the Tarascans, with sections on music, painting, customs, religious practices and so forth. The appendix consists of a speech made by Moxó in 1807 on the English invasion of Buenos Aires.
