Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. 1st Edition. Ex-library with the usual library markings (if not for the library markings this copy would be graded in fine condition); overall a nice used copy! Black boards with gilt lettering on the spine. 424 historical and informative pages nicely enhanced by black and white photographs and illustrations! "A biography of composer Jacques Offenbach that is also a social and cultural history of Second Empire Paris.Siegfried Kracauer's biography of the composer Jacques Offenbach is a remarkable work of social and cultural history. First published in German in 1937 and in English translation in 1938, the book uses the life and work of Offenbach as a focal point for a broad and penetrating portrayal of Second Empire Paris. Offenbach's immensely popular operettas have long been seen as part of the larger historical amnesia and escapism that pervaded Paris in the aftermath of 1848. But Kracauer insists that Offenbach's productions must be understood as more than glittering distractions. The fantasy realms of such operettas as La Belle Hélène were as one with the unreality of Napoleon III's imperial masquerade, but they also made a mockery of the pomp and pretense surrounding the apparatuses of power. At the same time, Offenbach's dreamworlds were embedded with a layer of utopian content that can be seen as an indictment of the fraudulence and corruption of the times. This edition includes Kracauer's preface to the original German edition as well as a critical foreword by Gertrud Koch.".

Añadir al carritoHéritier, Françoise. Two sisters and their mother: the anthropology of incest. Translated by Jeanine Herman. New York: Zone Books, 2002, 341pp., PAPERBACK, very good copy, rear top corner bent, BUT old price crossed out in red ink on half-title, several remainder stripes on bottom foredge, dot on top foredge. Rear cover text: "anthropologist Francoise Héritier charts the incest prohibition throughout history from the strict decrees of Leviticus to modern civil codes. Through close and subtle readings, Heritier exposes the frequent, but often overlooked, elaborations concerning what she calls a secondary type of incest, namely, the prohibition of two close blood relatives engaging in sexual intercourse with a third person. Héritier not only understands this phenomenon to be as universal as the more classical "first" type of incest banning sexual relations between certain blood relatives; she advances the controversial thesis that the first type may indeed be an outgrowth of the secondary type of incest, once it is understood properly as the transfer of bodily fluids in a love triangle of sexual partners, two of whom are related to each other.". 9780942299342 ISBN 0942299345.

Añadir al carritoBook is in excellent condition. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. The Na of China, farmers in the Himalayan region, live without the institution of marriage. Na brothers and sisters live together their entire lives, raising the women's children. Since, like other societies, the Na respect the incest prohibition, they practice a system of furtive or conspicuous night visits during which a man goes to a woman's home. In addition to spending long periods of time with the Na, Cai Hua has analyzed numerous historical Chinese documents. He presents us with a lucid, fascinating monograph that shows how a society can function without fathers or husbands. In light of Na ethnography, he leads the reader toward a new reflection on the nature of marriage and family ? long the objects of circular reasoning in sociological analyses. Since the inception of humankind's interest in the diversity of its cultures, this is the first time an anthropologist has encountered a society whose structure differs totally from that of other societies throughout the rest of the world. This discovery is likely to provoke fundamental changes in the way we look at social life and human behavior.
