This collection of Tiang oral literature is part of the material recorded on three field trips to Djaul, an island eight miles off the west coast of New Ireland. There were about 800 Tiang speakers at the time of collection (circa 1972), all living in five villages and numerous hamlets at the southeast end of the island. There are many kinds of Tiang magic spells, songs and chants, reflecting in their diversity the range of interests and activities of the traditional Tiang society, among others: asumilau (fishing magic), kepkayvey (to increase the bravery of men and dogs for fighting); mesiung (garden magic); kukui (rain and sun control); sivasat and kukurang (to make the sea rough and calm, respectively); alelep (love magic); bungsusus (to make children grow).

It is separated from New Ireland by a relatively short stretch of reefs and low-lying islands known as the Tigaks. Given the close proximity their residents share a range of mutual historical experiences. Equally, New Hanover has also followed some unique historical pathways of its own. Based primarily in archaeological data this pamphlet outlines some possible histories of New Hanover.

Born in Hungary, I grew up in North Eastern Nigeria, a region of the country that is challenged by low literacy levels and poverty. As a female of mixed heritage, I learned at an early age to overcome bias regarding gender inequality and race. I studied pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Jos, Nigeria, and Healthcare Management & Leadership at the Westford School of Management in the UAE. Working as a public health specialist in a developing country, I have come across people and situations that have inspired my reflections on the genuine struggles and aspirations of the underprivileged. I hope they will help dispel prejudice and common misconceptions about them. These stories are all very personal to me, capturing some of my experiences, thoughts or moods at different points in time. Some of these stories, like 'No worry', 'Noodles' and 'Throwback Thursday' were written when I traveled across the country to work. I often felt alone and afraid on these trips but look back fondly on these memories now. Other stories, like 'Blankets for the wind' and 'Crazy, this love' are the experiences of others that I have tried to recreate as I heard them. 'Trashcan Girl', 'Musa's boots' and 'Racing to school' are stories of the forgotten children I watch growing up around me. The horror of being accused of something you didn't do, of being killed for reasons of prejudice is the sad reality behind 'She resisted' and 'National Youth Service'. Behind every story is a person that is real. I live in Abuja with my husband and three children.

Death of a Muruk is an old village tale in Wautogik, East Sepik Province where Narokobi was from. The story is a common legend among the Arapesh people in East Sepik. This is Narokobi's own account of the popular fable. Bernard Narokobi derived a lot of inspiration from his village. He called it the "University of Melanesia", where lessons are offered on life. A lot of his plays like the Tok Pisin play "Tait Bilong Sun, Tait Bilong Nait," which was performed at the University of Papua New Guinea Outdoor Theatre by the Arts and Drama Society, and "Strangers Are My People" are in fact old village legends of Wautogik.

Like that School, it included, at various times in its training responsibility, the preparation of nurses, medical assistants, dentists, laboratory technicians and radiographers, as well as doctors. It was the training of the first indigenous doctors, however, that the College was best known, and it is that aspect of its work that is the focus of this narrative. The first Papuans and New Guineans to graduate as doctors entered the first year of their course in 1960, and the final class completed their training in 1970. Fifty years on from its beginnings, surviving staff and students gathered in Port Moresby to recall and celebrate the work of the College. This account seeks to give recognition to those who participated in a pioneering educational enterprise. It also endeavours to place in a broader context the 10 years during which the Papuan Medical College trained doctors. Training of health workers was carried out from early days in the colonial administrations of both Papua and New Guinea, and deserves mention. The Faculty of Medicine within the University of Papua New Guinea has enlarged and extended medical training into multiple specialties and new fields. But it was built on the existing structures of the Papuan Medical College and drew its initial impetus almost entirely from the achievements of the College.

Condición: Fine. 134 pp. The inspiration for this book could have been my stories about the prison writings of Papua New Guinea's John Kasaipwalova, Kenya's Ngugi wa Thiong'o, or the Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci's Prison Notebooks that got the Buimo prisoners and warders to write their stories during a writers' workshop between October 26th and November 6th, 2009. Doris Omaken and Jill Pijui of the PNG Bible Society coordinated the writers' workshop. University of PNG colleague Sakarepe Kamene and I facilitated the workshop as part of our community outreach obligation. Paul Kaiu gave his support in a significant way to the workshop. We approached the workshop with two considerations: First, we believed, that everyone had the skills and interesting experiences to tell stories. The Buimo Prison writers' workshop began with storytelling. We guided the participants to write these stories down on paper. Second, we decided against using papers, fixed structures, and programs. Our view was that using the techniques used in formal university classrooms was intimidating to learners at the village level or in prisons. Our approach was simple, flexible, and allowed a lot of verbal interactions. The prisoners have a lot of time for devotion and reflection on life. Introducing them to writing techniques and having them write down their experiences can serve as a therapeutic exercise and as a process of self-expression. The writings produced in the workshop had one strong impression. The prisoners are now equipped with the knowledge and techniques of writing their life stories in short prose or if need be, as a book. Some of the participants indicated that the workshop has given them a new ray of hope in life's difficult journeys. Sharing their personal experiences with us through writing gave us a glimpse into their lives outside and inside of the prison walls. As it turned out three inmates were friends I have known before, but had no idea they were in prison for being on the wrong side of the law. Nonetheless, I was happy to share the moments with them as a friend visiting them in prison.
