Jonathan Rowson is a Scottish chess player and philosopher. He is a three-time British chess champion and was awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE in 1999. Rowson's peak rating of 2599 was achieved in July 2005, when he was ranked number 139 in the world.[2][8] In addition to winning the British Championship in three consecutive years, Rowson's best results include sharing first at the World Open in Philadelphia in 2002,[9] at the Hastings Premier in 2003/4, and outright first at the Capo D'Orso open in Sardinia in 2008. The Bronstein-Ljubojevic game qualifies to be in the category of Amazing Games. The players had styles that could lead their opponents, or themselves, into trouble. This was pleasing to the spectators, including the other players. The opening was the Alekhine Defense. The Four Pawns Variation was played with the good, dubious, or exciting 6.c5. Bronstein, as White, enjoyed an advantage in space. He played to attack, even at the cost of a rook. This was something, the spectator Keres, who was also an attacking player, did not see the point of for awhile. The result of this game did not decide the fate of the line chosen. It would still be played and continued to be part of Ljubojevic's practice. Why not? After all, we are still trying to figure this out at leisure. Over the board, even with preparation, it could feel wilder, as the nerves, new moves, and the clock challenge the memory. Two articles by Robert Byrne laid in with notes to this variation. The Richter Veresov Attack (or Veresov Opening) is a chess opening that begins with the moves: 1. d4 d5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. Bg5 It is also often reached by transposition, for example 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nc3 d5 3.Bg5 (the most common move order), 1.d4 Nf6 2.Bg5 d5 3.Nc3, or 1.Nc3 Nf6 2.d4 d5 3.Bg5. The opening was named after the German International Master Kurt Richter and later the Soviet master Gavriil Veresov, who played it frequently for over a quarter of a century. Along with the Trompowsky Attack, Colle System, London System, and Torre Attack, the Richter Veresov Attack is one of the more common branches of the Queen's Pawn Game. The Richter Veresov Attack looks like the more popular Ruy Lopez opening mirrored on the queenside, but the dynamics of play are quite different.
