What is known nowadays about the topology of smooth and singular vari eties is quite impressive. Oberstes Gebot muB eine bewuBtere Nutzung des nicht vermehr baren Naturraums sein, die auf sparsamen und schonenden Umgang mit den Ressourcen ausgerichtet ist, urn die Auswirkungen der bisherigen Schaden zu begrenzen und ktinftige Schaden moglichst gering zu halten. Dazu benotigen wir Bestandsaufnahmen, urn Ursachen, Art und AusmaB der Schadigungen abschatzen zu konnen. So, wie der Kriminologe versucht, die Hintergrtinde der des weltweiten Tat und den Tathergang zu ermitteln, mtissen die Auswirkungen fahrlassigen Umganges mit der Erde systematisch studiert werden. Bereits die bisher vorgenommenen Untersuchungen zu den Veranderungen auf unserem Planeten lieBen erkennen, daB die gesamte Erde als 'Tatort' zu betrachten ist. Die Erfassungsmethoden fUr die Umweltveranderungen wurden laufend verfei nert, aber das AusmaB und die Geschwindigkeit der Veranderungen haben sich kaum verringert.
