To control the flow of resources within their colony all its members resort to manipulations of their nestmates: parental manipulation of offspring is only one facet of a complex web of manipul ation, exploitation and competition for resources within the colony. The political intrigues extend outside the bounds of the colony, to insects and plants which have mutualistic relations with ants. In eusociality some individuals (sterile workers) do not pass their genes to a new generation directly. Closed form solutions of the partial differential equations with their complicated boundary conditions for any of these three methods have been obtained only in special cases. In order to obtain solutions, various special methods have been developed to determine the stresses and displacements in structures. The equations have been reduced to two and one dimensional forms for plates, beams, and trusses. By neglecting the local effects at the edges and ends, satisfactory solutions can be obtained for many case~. During the last few years this approach has been utilized by a progressively increasing number of investigators to analyze malignant cells. Although monoclonal antibodies to tumor associated antigens have not become yet routine reagents in immunopathology, they have provided new information which could not be obtained with conventional antisera or histochemical procedures. The following are representative examples. TUmor associated antigens have been identified which display a restricted distribution in normal tissues and therefore may represent useful markers for radio imaging and appropriate targets for immunotherapy. In spite of undetec table differences with conventional histopathological approaches hetero geneity has been found in the antigenic profile of tumor cells within a lesion, in autologous lesions removed from different anatomic sites from a given patient and in lesions removed from different patients. Phenotypes of tumor cells have been identified which correlate with the biology of tumor cells and with the clinical course of the disease. From a practical view point the use of monoclonal antibodies in immunopathology has enhanced interactions between pathologists and immunologists, as exemplified by the present book. Such interactions have contributed to the application of basic research to clinical problems. The foundation followed the building of the first nuclear power plant in the G D R ('Kernkraftwerk I der DDR') in the period 1956-66 between Rheinsberg and Furstenberg (Havel). The nuclear power plant is situated between two stratified lakes - Lake Stechlin and Lake Nehmitz - far from any industrialized area in the midst of extensive woodland. The cooling water is taken from Lake Nehmitz and led away into Lake Stechlin, having passed through the cooling system of the plant. The temperature is on average 10° C above the ordinary level. From Lake Stechlin the water is led back to Lake Nehmitz (Schrader 1962). It was expected that the deep, oligotrophic Lake Stechlin would be loaded thermally and materially by the cooling water circuit, meaning that it would be 'eutrophized' , while the slightly eutrophic Lake Nehmitz would be 'oligotrophized'.
