As the field of wireless sensor networks matures, new design concepts, experim- tal and theoretical findings, and applications have continued to emerge at a rapid pace. As one of the leading international conferences in this area, EWSN has played a s- stantial role in the dissemination of innovative research ideas from researchers all over the globe. EWSN 2010 was organized by the University of Coimbra, Portugal, during February 17¿19, 2010 and it was the seventh meeting in this series. Previous events were held in Berlin (Germany) in 2004, Istanbul (Turkey) in 2005, Zurich (Switz- land) in 2006, Delft (The Netherlands) in 2007, and Cork (Ireland) in 2009. A high-quality selection of papers made up EWSN 2010. Based on the reviews and the recommendations from the four live TPC discussions, we selected a total of 21 papers from 109 submissions (19.26% acceptance rate) for EWSN 2010. Topics of interest included hardware design and implementation, operating systems and so- ware, middleware and macroprogramming, communication and network protocols, information and signal processing, fundamental theoretical limits and algorithms, prototypes, field experiments, testbeds, novel applications, including urban sensing, security and fault-tolerance. Putting together EWSN 2010 was a team effort. We would like to thank the P- gram Committee members, the reviewers, our sponsors, all authors, and the Organ- ing Committee for their respective contributions.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 360 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -The study of permutation complexity can be envisioned as a new kind of symbolic dynamics whose basic blocks are ordinal patterns, that is, permutations defined by the order relations among points in the orbits of dynamical systems.Since its inception in 2002 the concept of permutation entropy has sparked a new branch of research in particular regarding the time series analysis of dynamical systems that capitalizes on the order structure of the state space. Indeed, on one hand ordinal patterns and periodic points are closely related, yet ordinal patterns are amenable to numerical methods, while periodicity is not.Another interesting feature is that since it can be shown that random (unconstrained) dynamics has no forbidden patterns with probability one, their existence can be used as a fingerprint to identify any deterministic origin of orbit generation. This book is primarily addressed to researchers working in the field of nonlinear dynamics and complex systems, yet will also be suitable for graduate students interested in these subjects. The presentation is a compromise between mathematical rigor and pedagogical approach. Accordingly, some of the more mathematical background needed for more in depth understanding has been shifted into the appendices.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 268 pp. Englisch.

In addition to the new assessment of various developing and emerging nations, the considerable downgrading of the mean purchasing power of China and India is of particular significance. The present English edition of the book takes this into account. Con- quently it is not simply a translation of the German edition, but is also an update, in both the introduction and the main report. Biel, January 2010 Valentin Crastan Preface to the German edition Climate change is becoming more and more evident to everybody and there is an urgent need for action. The resonance resulting from the forthcoming conference in Copenhagen can be taken as a sign that even international po- tics is taking the subject seriously. The need for a worldwide reduction of CO emissions is only sporadically doubted. The required extent of this re- 2 duction is also largely clear. However, there is continuing argument over how much contribution to this should be made by the individual countries and regions of the world. The following report is an attempt to provide a basis for rational discussion, with an analysis of the worldwide energy economy and the associated em- sions. Measurable indicators based on the two main aspects, namely energy efficiency and CO intensity, should enable the efforts to be judged equitably.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 100 pp. Englisch.

However, the focus of these discussions is often on single, isolated, and speci c architectural and technological improvements for power reduction and conservation, while ignoring the fact that power ef ciency as a ratio of performance to power consumption is equally in uenced by performance improvements and architectural power red- tion. Furthermore, ef ciency can be in uenced on all levels of today¿s system hi- archies from single cores all the way to distributed Grid environments. To improve execution and power ef ciency requires progress in such diverse elds as program optimization, optimization of program scheduling, and power reduction of idling system components for all levels of the system hierarchy. Improving computer system ef ciency requires improving system performance and reducing system power consumption. To research and reach reasonable conc- sions about system performance we need to not only understand the architectures of our computer systems and the available array of code transformations for p- formance optimizations, but we also need to be able to express this understanding in performance models good enough to guide decisions about code optimizations for speci c systems. This understanding is necessary on all levels of the system hierarchy from single cores to nodes to full high performance computing (HPC) systems, and eventually to Grid environments with multiple systems and resources.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 240 pp. Englisch.

The multi-faceted problems in this domain require a wide range of methods from various scienti c disciplines. There is no question that the inclusion of time delays in complex system models considerably enriches the challenges presented by the problems. Although this inclusion often becomes inevitable as real-world applications demand more and more realistic m- els, the role of time delays in the context of complex systems so far has not attracted the interest it deserves. The present volume is an attempt toward lling this gap. There exist various useful tools for the study of complex time-delay systems. At the forefront is the mathematical theory of delay equations, a relatively mature eld in many aspects, which provides some powerful techniques for analytical inquiries, along with some other tools from statistical physics, graph theory, computer science, dynamical systems theory, probability theory, simulation and optimization software, and so on. Nevertheless, the use of these methods requires a certain synergy to address complex systems problems, especially in the presence of time delays.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 340 pp. Englisch.

This year¿s edition of ALA was the second after the merger of the former wo- shops ALAMAS and ALAg. In 2008 this joint workshop was organized for the rst time under the ag of both events. ALAMAS was a yearly returning Eu- pean workshop on adaptive and learning agents and multi-agent systems (held eight times). ALAg was the international workshop on adaptive and learning agents, which was usually held at AAMAS. To increase the strength, visibility and quality of the workshop it was decided to merge both workshops under the ag of ALA and to set up a Steering Committee as an organizational backbone. This book contains six papers presented during the workshop, which were carefully selected after an additional review round in the summer of 2009. We therefore wish to explicitly thank the members of the Program Committee for the quality and sincerity of their e orts and service. Achieving orders of magnitude performance and power improvements using FPGAs over traditional microp- cessorsis not uncommon for well-suitedapplications. But even with two decades of research and technological advances, FPGA design still presents a subst- tial challenge and often necessitates hardware design expertise to exploit its true potential. Although the challenges to address the design productivity - sues are steep, the promise and the potential of the RC technology in terms of performance, power, size, and versatility continue to attract application design engineers and RC researchers alike. The International Symposium on Applied Recon gurable Computing (ARC) aims to bring together researchers and practitioners of RC systems with an emphasis on practical applications and design methodologies of this promising technology. Añadir al carritoBuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -This book on recent investigations of the dynamics of celestial bodies in the solar and extra-Solar System is based on the elaborated lecture notes of a thematic school on the topic, held as a result of cooperation between the SYRTE Department of Paris Observatory and the section of astronomy of the Vienna University. Each chapter corresponds to a lecture of several hours given by its author(s). The book therefore represents a necessary and very precious document for teachers, students, and researchers in the eld. The rst two chapters by A. Lemä tre and H. Skokos deal with standard topics of celestial mechanics: the rst one explains the basic principles of resonances in mechanics and their studies in the case of the Solar System. The differences between the various cases of resonance (mean motion, secular, etc. ) are emphasized together with resonant effects on celestial bodies moving around the Sun. The second one deals with approximative methods of describing chaos. These methods, some of them being classical, as the Lyapounov exponents, other ones being developed in the very recent past, are explained in full detail. The second one explains the basic principles of resonances in mechanics and their studies in the case of the Solar System. The differences between the various cases of resonance (mean motion, s- ular, etc. ) are emphasized together with resonant effects on celestial bodies moving around the Sun. Re ecting on this, we see the need for science to recover reality; can it reveal new avenues for thought and investigation of the complexity The study of science is the pursuit of clarity and distinctness. Physics, after Galilei placed it in the realm of mathematics, has been trying to establish clearness by mathematical logic. While physics and mathematics, respectively, have different intellectual incentives, they have intersected in history on countless occasions and have woven a awless system of wisdom. The core of rigorous science is always made of mathematical logic; the laws of science cannot be represented without the language of mathematics. Conversely, it is undoubtedly dif cult to stimulate ma- ematical intellect without a reference to the interests of science that are directed to the real world. However, various criticisms have been raised against the discourses of sciences that explain the events of the real world as if they are ¿governed¿ by mathematical laws. Sciences, being combined with technologies, have permeated, in the form of technical rationalism, the domain of life, politics, and even the psychological world. The criticisms accuse seemingly logical scienti c narratives of being responsible for widespread destruction and emergence of crises, unprecedented suffering of hum- ity.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 224 pp. Englisch.

The basic philosophy of IAS research is to explore and understand the nature of intelligence in problems of perception, reasoning, learning and control in order to develop and implement the theory to engineered realization. In other words, the objective is to formulate various me- odologies for the development of robots which can operate autonomously and exhibit intelligent behavior by making appropriate decisions to perform the right task at the right time. Since IAS basically deals with the integration of machines, computing, sensing, and software to create intelligent systems capable of intera- ing with the complexities of the real world, advanced topics like soft computing, artificial life, evolutionary biology, and cognitive psychology have great promise in improving its intelligence and performance. Because of the inter-disciplinary character, the subject has several challenging issues for research, design and development covering a number of disciplines. These issues are further concerned with the development of both technology and methodology apart from various operations. The present research monograph titled ¿Intelligent Autonomous Systems: Foundations and Applications', edited by two renowned researchers, Professor Dilip K. Pratihar of IIT, Kharagpur, India and Professor Lakhmi C. Jain, Univ- sity of South Australia, Australia, provides a fairly representative cross-section of the activities that is going on all over the world in this area.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 280 pp. Englisch.

The electrical 6 1 1 conductivity varies over many orders of magnitude, from 10 m for 20 1 1 typical metals down to 10 m for almost ideal insulators. However, a sharp separation between metals and insulators is in general not possible. For instance, semiconducting materials such as silicon and germanium ll the conductivity domain between metals and insulators. Their electrical cond- tivity is dependent on temperature and,in addition, canbe variedstronglyby doping the material with donor or acceptor atoms. A famous example is the sharp insulator-to-metal transition measured in Si:P at temperatures below 18 3 0.1K and donor concentrations of about 3.8×10 cm phosphor atoms [1]. Furthermore, materials may exist in both states: carbon is metallic as graphite and insulating as diamond. A fascinating quantum e ect is observed at low temperatures: some materials even loose their electrical resistivity and becomesuperconductors. Therefore, thequestionsWhatisametal andWhen does a metal transform into a nonmetal are of fundamental interest and - lated to many aspects of modern physics and chemistry. We refer the int- ested reader to the very nice introduction into this diverse topic given by Edwards [2].Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 204 pp. Englisch.
