Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Originally published in 1919 under the pseudonym of the narrator of the story, Herman Hesse's 'Demian' is the coming of age story of its principal character 'Emil Sinclair.' The struggle of Emil is one of self-awareness. A principal theme that courses through the novel is that of the inherent duality of existence. In the case of Emil this duality presents itself in the form of the opposing demands of the external world and his one internal quest for spiritual fulfillment. Emil's quest to resolve this conflict forces him to seek out the guidance and validation from the elders of his world including his mother Eva, Pistorius, an organist at a local church, and ultimately Max Demian, a childhood friend who leads Emil to his eventual self-realization. Given its subject matter, 'Demian' is a popular choice for young readers, one that explores the interesting psychological underpinnings of growing up.

Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - This uncompleted suite of poems by French poet Arthur Rimbaud was first published serially in the Paris literary review magazine 'La Vogue.' The magazine published part of 'Illuminations' from May to June 1886. Paul Verlaine, Rimbaud's lover, suggested the publication of these poems, written between 1873 and 1875, in book form. All forty-two of the poems generally considered as part of 'Illuminations' are collected together here in this edition. Of these forty-two poems almost all are in a prose poem format, the two exceptions are 'Seapiece' and 'Motion', which are vers libre. There is no universally defined order to the poems in 'Illuminations', while many scholars believe the order of the poems to be irrelevant, this edition begins traditionally with 'Après Le Deluge' or 'After the Flood.' Albert Camus hailed Rimbaud as 'the poet of revolt, and the greatest.' The worth of this praise for Rimbaud can be seen in 'Illuminations', one of the most exemplary works of his poetic talent.

Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Literally meaning 'heart', the Japanese word 'kokoro' can be more distinctly translated as 'the heart of things' or 'feeling.' Natsume Soseki's 1914 novel, which was originally published in serial format in a Japanese newspaper, 'Kokoro' deals with the transition from the Japanese Meiji society to the modern era. Divided into three parts 'Sensei and I,' 'My Parents and I,' and 'Sensei and His Testament,' the novel explores the themes of loneliness and isolation. In the first part we find the narrator attending university where he befriends an older man, known only as 'Sensei,' who lives a largely reclusive life. In the second part of the novel the narrator graduates from college and returns home to await the death of his father. The third part of the novel recounts a letter that the narrator receives from the 'Sensei,' which describes the circumstances that caused his loss of faith in humanity and the guilt he feels over the death of a childhood friend which drives him to the reclusive life that he has led. A deeply thematic novel 'Kokoro' provides an excellent introduction to one of Japan's most beloved authors, Natsume Soseki.

Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The title of this novel is a combination of two Sanskrit words, 'siddha,' which is defined as 'achieved,' and 'artha' which is defined as 'meaning' or 'wealth.' The invented word serves as the name for the principal character, a man on a spiritual journey of self-discovery during the time of the Buddha. The titular character Siddhartha is the son of a wealthy Brahmin family who decides to leave his home in the hopes of gaining spiritual illumination. Siddhartha is joined by his best friend Govinda; the two renounce their earthly possessions, engage in ritual fasting and intense meditation and ultimately seek out and speak with Gautam, the famous Buddha. Here the two go their separate ways, Govinda joining the order of the Buddha, Siddhartha traveling on in order to find his spiritual enlightenment. In order to complete this novel Hesse immersed himself in the sacred teachings of both Hindu and Buddhist scriptures and lived a semi-reclusive life in order to achieve his own spiritual enlightenment. 'Siddhartha' is considered one of Hesse's most important works and remains one of his most popular; a work that deals with the quest that we all undertake in some way or another, the quest to define our lives in an environment of conflicting dualities and ultimately find spiritual awareness.

Pánfilo de Narváez set sail in 1527 to conquer and settle present day Florida. Setting out with a crew of approximately 600 members ultimately only four members would survive the ill-fated expedition. The journey would take these four survivors from Spain to Hispaniola and Cuba and then onto Florida. Sailing through a hurricane and other storms the expedition would finally land near Tampa Bay. Suffering from Indian attacks and the effects of poor food and disease the crew, of which there was now only eighty, decided to sail from Florida to Mexico. In 1536, the four survivors-Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, Alonso del Castillo Maldonado, Andrés Dorantes de Carranza, and his enslaved Moor Estevanico-finally managed to rejoin Spanish countrymen in present-day Mexico City. Upon returning to Spain Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca would receive considerable notoriety for his published account of the ordeal.

It is the story of its titular character Gösta Berling, a deposed minister. Gösta Berling becomes one of the pensioners in the manor at Ekeby when he is saved by the Mistress of Ekeby from freezing to death. Set on the shores of Lake Fryken, Lake Löven in the story, in Värmland, a historical province in Sweden, the novel employs elements of magic realism to project an exotic image of early 19th century Sweden. Described in the 'Encyclopedia Americana' as a 'prose epic of Swedish country life,' 'The Saga of Gösta Berling' remains to this day one of Lagerlöf's most popular works and an undisputed classic of Swedish romanticism.

His principal philosophy is embodied in the following statement 'No man ever steps in the same river twice,' in other words man faces an ever-present change in the universe. He believed in the unity of opposites, stating that 'the path up and down are one and the same.' According to Diogenes, Heraclitus worked on 'a continuous treatise On Nature,' which 'was divided into three discourses, one on the universe, another on politics, and a third on theology.' Only fragments of this work remain today many of which are quoted from other authors. Those fragments are presented here in a translation and with critical commentary by G. T. W. Patrick.

Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Anatole France's work 'Les dieux ont soif' translates to 'The Gods Will Have Blood' or 'The Gods are Athirst.' Both translations of the title accurately depict the nature of this novel set during the French Revolution. Young artist Évariste Gamelin is the right-hand man of Jacobin, Marat, and Robespierre and eventually becomes appointed as a juror on the Revolutionary Tribunal during the heinous Reign of Terror. Though Gamelin fully believes in the ideas of revolution and liberty, he uses his position of power to terrorize his friends and family who do not agree with his zealous ideals. Yet his bloodthirsty nature is put to an end when he, along with his mentor Robespierre, is beheaded during the aftermath of the Thermidorian Reaction. 'The Gods Will Have Blood' was published in 1912, and author Anatole France received the Nobel Prize for Literature in honor of his literary achievements. The text shows the dangers a fervently angry country and the terror that can arise when the public is allowed to dole out its own version of justice with random death sentences. It shows the consequences when humanity is consumed by an idea, even a good idea, that is allowed to become more important than the people who hold it.

Her case is detailed in this work and is acknowledged as the first use of the technique of psychoanalysis as a form of cure. In total discussions on five cases are included in this volume along with supporting theoretical discussions of psychopathology and therapy of hysteria. Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Theophile Gautier's masterpiece 'Mademoiselle de Maupin' might be better known for its lengthy preface than the actual novel itself. It is there in which the author discusses art for art's sake, arguing that 'everything useful is ugly.' The novel itself is a historical romance based on the life of French opera star Julie d'Aubigny, better known as Mademoiselle Maupin. The subject of gossip and many colorful stories during her time, Mademoiselle Maupin was known as a first-rate swordswoman who often disguised herself as a man. In 'Mademoiselle de Maupin' we find a love triangle between Chevalier d'Albert, a young French Gentleman who struggles with finding a woman that meets his idealistic expectations, Rosette whom he engages in an affair with to ease his boredom, and the dashing young Theodore, who is actually Maupin disguised as a man. 'Mademoiselle de Maupin' is an excellent example of the French historical romance which in its time was considered somewhat controversial for its sexually orientated themes; by today's standards however it would be considered quite tame.

Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Émile Durkheim is often referred to as the father of sociology. Along with Karl Marx and Max Weber he was a principal architect of modern social science and whose contribution helped established it as an academic discipline. 'The Division of Labor in Society', published in 1893, was his first major contribution to the field and arguably one his most important. In this work Durkheim discusses the construction of social order in modern societies, which he argues arises out of two essential forms of solidarity, mechanical and organic. Durkheim further examines how this social order has changed over time from more primitive societies to advanced industrial ones. Unlike Marx, Durkheim does not argue that class conflict is inherent to the modern Capitalistic society. The division of labor is an essential component to the practice of the modern capitalistic system due to the increased economic efficiency that can arise out of specialization; however Durkheim acknowledges that increased specialization does not serve all interests equally well. This important and foundational work is a must read for all students of sociology and economic philosophy.

After being exiled by Emperor Caligula, he was finally welcomed back to Rome as Nero's minister. He gained significant wealth, though Seneca often despised his own standing because of his personal philosophy. At the end of his life, Seneca wrote a number of letters to the Roman governor of Sicily. From this collection of letters comes 'Letters from a Stoic.' In this work, the philosopher wrote about the essential tenants of Stoicism and how to follow a philosophy that required a person to humanize a society that was often cold and difficult. Many people read these letters and come away with a greater understanding of Stoicism; the people who practiced Stoicism often lived the phrase 'actions speak louder than words,' meaning that Stoics wanted their deeds to exhibit their rational and calm nature. The texts in 'Letters from a Stoic' also reveal how Seneca and his contemporaries wanted people to treat others with the same respect they wanted for themselves. He was disgusted with the harsh and unethical treatment of slaves that was prevalent at the time, and he was against Nero's idea of entertainment which entailed throwing martyrs, gladiators, and animals into a fighting arena. Although Stoicism is not now as widely practiced as it once was, many people can still find wisdom and inspiration through Seneca's words and letters.

Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - Ancient Roman senator and historian Publius Cornelius Tacitus is known throughout Western history as one of the greatest historical writers of the Silver Age of Latin literature. He lived during the first century AD and was the son of a wealthy aristocratic family. Not much is known about his personal life; however, it is clear that both Tacitus and Pliny the Elder were acquaintances and even possibly childhood friends, though there is no substantial evidence to support this. Tacitus studied rhetoric in order to create a career in law and politics. He steadily rose throughout the ranks due to his strong speaking style and oration skills. However, his language skills did not stop with verbal speeches. He was also an accomplished writer who focused on the history of the Roman Empire. He created five works, 'The Annals,' 'The Histories,' 'The Agricola,' 'The Germania,' and 'A Dialogue on Oratory.' His works delve deep into the facts as he knew them, rarely ever embellishing history to create a story. He also stayed true to chronological order and laid history out in visible steps. It is also notable that Tacitus knew that his fellow politicians were corrupt; he believed that they gave up their strong voice in order to please a usually corrupt emperor. These five great works are brought together in this collection of 'The Complete Works of Tacitus.'.

The quality of Racine's poetry has been described as possibly his most important contribution to French literature and his use of the alexandrine poetic line is one of the best examples of such use noted for its harmony, simplicity and elegance. While critics over the centuries have debated the worth of Jean Racine, at present, he is widely considered a literary genius of revolutionary proportions. Collected in this volume is a complete collection of Racine's dramatic works. Written between 1664 and 1691 Racine's plays draw their subject matter from historical events, mythology and the Bible. Presented in this volume are translations by Robert Bruce Boswell of the following works: 'The Thebaid', 'Alexander the Great', 'Andromache', 'The Litigants', 'Britannicus', 'Berenice', 'Bajazet', 'Mithridates', 'Iphigenia', 'Phaedra', 'Esther', and 'Athaliah'.
