This book explores one of the finest soldiers of the old Imperial Austrian Army, Maximilian von Browne, based on a thorough investigation of the Viennese archives and of the terrain of the Marshal's battles. . A biography of one of the most celebrated Catholic officers whose family fled from Ireland to mainland Europe . Von Browne was one of the great military geniuses of the era, even outwitting Frederick the Great during the Seven Years War . This book also looks at the military strategies of the mid 18th century Although little known in this country, Maximilian von Browne is counted among the finest soldiers of the old Imperial Austrian Army. As the present biography sets out to show, he was outstanding in his time for his vigorous conduct of war, and his extremely advanced idea of leadership and responsibility. Few commanders have taken so literally the phrase 'to share the hardships of his men'. A son of that generation of Irishmen who fled from a penal regime to take service in Catholic Europe, Browne rose in the Army of the Empress Maria Theresa. In 1746, he could take the greater part of the credit for driving the French and Spanish forces from Italy, and in the next year he carried the war onto French soil by a celebrated invasion of Provence. Following an interval of peacetime, though far from uneventful, administration in the Imperial provinces, Browne checked and outwitted Frederick of Prussia in the first campaign of the Seven Years War. Already in the grip of a mortal illness, Browne was taken unawares when the Prussians resumed the attack in 1757, and of May 6 of that year he received a last wound, among his grenadiers on the field of Prague. The Wild Goose and the Eagle is founded on a thorough investigation of the Viennese archives and of the terrain of the Marshal's battles. It explores not just the life of a single commander, but the warfare of an age which holds many lessons for the present century. 8 b/w illustrations, 21 b/w maps This book explores one of the finest soldiers of the old Imperial Austrian Army, Maximilian von Browne, based on a thorough investigation of the Viennese archives and of the terrain of the Marshals battles. Terrorists were determined to prosecute a campaign against military aircraft operating in South Armagh and beyond, while roadside bombs made the security forces dependent on helicopters for surveillance and troop movements. The Westland Gazelle is one of the longest serving and most successful reconnaissance and observation helicopters. Drawing on his experience as a Gazelle pilot during a real time four-month tour of duty, the author describes what it was actually like to fly as a squadron pilot in the fight against terrorism. This interesting book takes you on an aerial odyssey of the province during 1990 when the conflict was at its heights. This narrative non-fiction account is unique because previous authors on the subject have not been pilots. The author describes the daily experience of being on the front line operating with different organisations in the security forces and how aerial support contributed toward keeping the peace. With plenty of technical flying content, and some historical context, the book will appeal to both aviation enthusiasts and military historians. AUTHOR: Peter Shaw was born in Aldershot and educated at Cranbrook School and the RMA Sandhurst. After a sixteen-year career in the British Army during which time he served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps, he became an airline pilot flying for a major carrier. A qualified flying instructor and keen sailor, he recently retired from aviation. He is the author of several online guides including Zero to Hero. Nighthawk One is his first book. He is married, has two grown-up daughters, and divides his time between Hampshire and Spain. 19 colour photos, 1 b/w map, 1 line drawing From Belfast to Bandit Country. The true story of a squadron pilot during the deadly Troubles in Northern Ireland and the application and determination required to fly the British Army Gazelle helicopter. Examines the predecessors to the Wagner Group, its activities in a number of conflicts around the world, and its armed mutiny against the top leadership of the Russian Federation. In the early 2010s the Wagner Group, a notorious private military company under the control of Yevgeny Prigozhin and Dmitry Utkin, began to emerge onto the world stage. This organisation first showed its hand in Crimea, eastern Ukraine and the civil war in Syria. It quickly became apparent that it had the blessing of the very highest levels of Putin's government in Russia to act as an armed extension of the country's foreign policy before a spectacular fall from grace following the mutiny in the summer of 2023. The role of mercenary is as old as recorded human history and stretches back to the earliest days of civilisation. For those states unable to afford a standing army the mercenary offered professional services and could be viewed as a profession of honour. When the mercenary fell into disrepute in the post-colonial world of revolutions, coups and counter-coups, it was essentially banned by the Geneva Protocols in the late twentieth century. The trade of mercenary did not go away however, and instead morphed into that of the 'private military company' or PMC, a still thriving global trade in a world of clandestine operations, that may or may not be government sanctioned, offering 'plausible deniability' in a casualty-averse age of hybrid warfare. Wagner Group Private Military Company Volume 1: Establishment, Purpose, Profile and Historic Relevance 20132023 looks at the profession of arms as practiced by mercenaries throughout history and the emergence of the modern private military company in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, along with the failed Slavonic Corps and Moran Security Group, often mistaken for early incarnations of Wagner. This work examines the emergence of the Wagner Group, its connection to the Russian government, security and intelligence services, and its operations in Syria, Libya, Sub-Saharan Africa and Venezuela as an extension of Russian foreign policy, often displacing Western interests, and as a private organisation primarily concerned with securing access to the world's oil and mineral resources for its owners and sponsors. Volume 2 will examine the group's role in Russian operations inside Ukraine from 2014 onwards. This volume is illustrated with original colour photographs showing the Wagner group's activities and its iconography, along with colour artworks highlighting the unusual equipment employed in many of the group's activities. An in-depth analysis of the air conflict between Russia and Ukraine, exploring the failures and successes of both sides' air forces and their impact on the ground campaign. On 24 February 2022, the armed forces of the Russian Federation initiated an invasion of Ukraine. Thus began the biggest and longest air war fought in Europe since 1945, and a conflict that saw the deployment of full spectrum of the Russian air power: strategic bombers deployed hundreds of cruise missiles combined with strikes by tactical ballistic missiles; the Russian Air-Space Force deployed its tactical and helicopter aviation into large-scale airborne and heliborne operations deep into Ukraine, while the Ukrainian Air Force fought back with its interceptors and attack helicopters. Taking place after the Russian invasion of eastern Ukraine and illegal annexation of Crimea of 2014-2015, and eight years of low-scale warfare in Donbas, as well as countless incidents on the ground and at sea, cyberwarfare, and political tensions, the onslaught was expected by many Western and Russian intelligence services to quickly topple the democratically elected government in Kyiv, and overrun and disarm the Ukrainian armed forces - with help of collaborators - in just three to 14 days. Despite the realisation of a full-scale Russian assault and invasion coming as a surprise to many, the Ukrainian Air Force (PSU) offered fierce resistance. The result was weeks of high-intensity air warfare, which ended only once the ground-based air defences of both sides were deployed in force to block the airspace for tactical aircraft of both sides. Richly illustrated and providing a detailed study of the participating air forces, and the fighting in the air during the Russian invasion, War in Ukraine, Volume 6 is the first concise and inclusive military history of this drama. AUTHORS: Tom Cooper is an Austrian aerial warfare analyst and historian. Following a career in worldwide transportation business - during which he established a network of contacts in the Middle East and Africa - he moved into narrow-focus analysis and writing on small, little-known air forces and conflicts, about which he has collected extensive archives. This has resulted in specialization in such Middle Eastern air forces as of those of Egypt, Iran, Iraq, and Syria, plus various African and Asian air forces. Except for authoring and co-authoring more than 30 books - including about a dozen of titles for Helion's atWar series - and over 1000 articles, Cooper is a regular correspondent for multiple defense-related publications. Adrien Fontanellaz, from Switzerland, is a military history researcher and author. He developed a passion for military history at an early age and has progressively narrowed his studies to modern-day conflicts. He is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Pully-based Centre d'histoire et de prospective militaries (Military History and Prospectives Center), and regularly contributes for the Revue Militaire Suisse and various French military history magazines. He is co-founder and a regular contributor to the French military history website L'autre cote de la colline. Milos Sipos is a Slovakian military historian. While pursuing a career in law, he has collected extensive documentation on inter-connected political, industrial, human resources and military-related affair in Iran, Iraq, and Syria. His core interest is a systematic approach to studies of their deep impacts upon combat efficiency and the general performance of local militaries. After more than 10 years of related work on the ACIG.info forum, he co-authored the much acclaimed book 'Iraqi Mirages: The Dassault Mirage Family in Service with the Iraqi Air Force'. This is his second instalment for Helion. 114 colour photos, 33 colour profiles, 5 colour maps, 12 tables Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

This work is one of the first published histories to examine this battle in its entirety, from the dramatic heliborne assault on Hostomel to the mauling of Russian units fleeing encirclement during Ukraine's counteroffensive. Drawing from a synthesis of newly available Ukrainian and Russian accounts and Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) gathering, Volume 8 builds upon the work conducted in Volumes 2, 5, and 6 to provide a richer and more comprehensive picture of the Russian axes of advance on Kyiv and their eventual defeats. The opening events of the operation are recast in the light of contemporary evidence, revealing new aspects of the controversial Ukrainian counterattack against Hostomel Airport late on 24 February 2022 for instance, whilst many previously unsung engagements of the subsequent fighting are detailed herein for the first time. This volume, extensively illustrated with full colour photography, maps, and original artworks of the soldiers, vehicles, and aircraft involved, will be enjoyed by any individual interested in the Russo-Ukrainian war. Well away from major land battlefields of the Iran-Iraq War, and curious eyes of the public, the navies of the two involved parties fought a major naval war. Ironically, the mass of their efforts remain entirely unknown until this very day. If anything was ever reported about their naval battles, then only within the frame of what the West mis-declared into the 'Tanker War'. Actually, and although best-known in the West, the portion of the Iran-Iraq War related to the Iraqi effort to prevent foreign tankers from loading the crude at Iranian oil terminals at Khark and elsewhere, was only one aspect of this naval war: indeed, 'just one brick' in an entire 'wall' that can only be described as the 'oil war' between Iran and Iraq. While the 'most spectacular', or at least attracting most of public attention, attacks by fighter-bombers of the Iraqi Air Force on tankers exporting the Iranian oil were 'barely scratching the surface': at least as often the Iraqi Navy trying exactly the same, but with help of its helicopters, fast missile craft and mines. In turn, the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy deployed its warships and helicopters supported by interceptors and fighter-bombers of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force to run a massive and convoy-protecting operation: the largest of its kind since 1945. The result were the most intensive air-sea battles of the last 75 years all characterised by their high speed and exchanges of massive blows. The Iran-Iraq Naval War describes and illustrates the key combatants and the most intense operations of both sides. Destroyers, frigates, corvettes, and fast missile crafts are all covered in thoroughly researched text, photographs and custom-drawn colour profiles, as are aircraft and helicopters supporting them. This book is thus taking the taking the reader in the middle of the action at sea and in the skies above it. AUTHORS: E. R. Hooton is a successful retired defence journalist, including acting as a Jane's yearbook editor. Tom Cooper is an Austrian aerial warfare analyst and historian. Farzin Nadimi is a writer and researcher of the Middle Eastern and Persian Gulf defense and security affairs, with a focus on Iran-Iraq War military history, energy security and geopolitics, economic warfare, and oil and gas industries. Milos Sipos is a Slovakian military historian. 26 b/w photos, 49 colour photos, 18 colour profiles, 5 colour maps, 2 colour diagrams This book describes and illustrates the key combatants and the most intense operations of Iran and Iraq. Its main goal was to destroy the Royal Navy in the Far East and achieve domination on the Eastern flank of the Pacific War on the eve of the battle of Midway. The bold operation of two Japanese task forces (Kido Butai and Malay Force) in the Indian Ocean could not be possible without the fall of Singapore in February and the Dutch East India in early March 1942. From the strategic point of view, the Japanese offensive in the Indian Ocean was the only moment in the Second World War when the Axis forces could coordinate their efforts to severely threaten the position of the British Empire in the crucial Middle East and India areas. The book contains the description of the strategic planning of both sides in February-March 1942, including the Japanese navy projections on the last step of the first stage of the Pacific War and the Royal Navy hope to halt the enemy advance without taking any significant risks. The Japanese offensive in the Indian Ocean began in March 1942 with the invasion on the Andaman Islands and Christmas Island. By securing both vital positions, the Japanese navy planned to establish its advanced bases in the eastern part of the Bay of Bengal. In the next step, the invincible Kido Butai consisted of five aircraft carriers with its escort, was expected to crush the British bases on Ceylon and once and forever destroy the main core of the Eastern Fleet. The chaos provoked by the Kido Butai would then become a great opportunity for the Malay Force to cut off the British shipping routes in the western part of the Bay of Bengal. This daring operation was tactical, though the strategically untapped success of the Japanese navy, which could no longer wage a victorious war on vast areas of the Pacific and the Indian Ocean. The presented book is the first systematic attempt to describe the less known part of the Pacific War by researching the British and the Japanese archive documents and other secondary sources published in the many countries, including the United Kingdom, Japan, and India. AUTHOR: Michal A. Piegzik is a Polish Ph.D. in law, living and working in Japan as a researcher, bringing new light on the Pacific War campaigns. In his academic career, he was awarded the Japanese Ministry of Education (MEXT) scholarship for exceptional research results and putting in practice the modern approach in science: presenting significant issues to the general audience, yet deeply investigating the Western and the Japanese archives sources and publications. Graduating from the Faculty of Law, the University of Wroclaw in 2015, he is currently researching Japanese family law at the Tokyo Metropolitan University. The Pacific War is his life's passion which also remarkably influenced his academic skills and career path. He lives in Sagamihara (Kanagawa prefecture), spending free time travelling around Japanese cities and the countryside with his wife. He is an author of five monographs and over 20 articles related to Japanese law and to the Pacific War. 47 b/w photos, 1 b/w & 5 colour maps, 16 colour profiles & figures, 18 tables The book presents the Japanese navy offensive in the Indian Ocean area in March-April 1942. Heirs to the massive Soviet tank force that faced NATO during the Cold War, since 2014, the Russian and Ukrainian tank forces, two largest armoured forces in Europe, are fighting on opposing sides of the RussoUkrainian War, the largest scale European conflict since the Second World War. The main battle tank (MBT) has been a critical part of land warfare. This book explores the primary MBTs used by each side of the conflict, from the latest Russian T-90M Proryv and Ukrainian BM Oplot, to the venerable Soviet T-64 that spawned them all. In particular, it takes a greater, in-depth look at some of the more neglected and misunderstood aspects of Soviet, Russian, and Ukrainian tanks and attempts to dispel some of the myths that have arisen since the Cold War. It also takes a look at the evolution in the training, doctrine, and usage of the Russian and Ukrainian tank forces as they have increasingly diverged in the aftermath of the outbreak of the war in 2014. Ukraine in particular, has made efforts to transform its military along the lines of NATO, while Russia has chosen to chart its own course. How has this affected the performance of both militaries, especially following the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022? The full history of the RussoUkrainian War remains to be written, but this book aims to at least give a background and a glimpse into one particular aspect of the war, as well as the role the MBT has played in the largest war of the 21st century so far. 88 colour photos, 15 colour profiles, 6 diagrams, 1 graph Exploring the main battle tanks used by each side of the Russo-Ukrainian War, from the cutting edge T-90M Proryv and BM Oplot to the venerable T-64 that spawned them all. Volume 7 of War in Ukraine provides a detailed account of the air war as it developed during 2023, a period in which Russia made extensive use of Tu-95 and Tu-22 bombers and their missiles to bring about the collapse of the power supply system in Ukraine. The second year of the War in Ukraine began with the Russian attempt to collapse the power supply and power grid of Ukraine through an offensive with ballistic- and cruise missiles. Lasting months, this operation saw the sustained deployment of Tu-95 and Tu-22 bombers and their missiles, combined with tactical precision guided munitions and Iranian-made Shahed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Highly promising, early on, the offensive failed because of last-minute deliveries of advanced air defence systems and a large number of power generators from the West: even then, it was a close call, with the government in Kyiv almost making the decision to evacuate the capital. Hard on the heels of this episode, the USA and Germany rushed PAC-2/3 Patriot air defence systems to Ukraine, which Russia attempted to knock out with its Kinzhal hypersonic missiles. Around the same time, the Russians also began deploying MPK/UMPK glide bombs to strike targets along the frontline from outside the range of Ukrainian air defences. War In Ukraine: Volume 7, Air War, January - December 2023 continues the detailed military history of this ongoing conflict, the largest in Europe since the end of the Second World War in 1945. This volume is illustrated throughout with original color photographs and includes specially commissioned color artworks. AUTHORS: Tom Cooper is an Austrian aerial warfare analyst and historian. This book details CIA-supported paramilitary operations in Laos during the height of the conflict in that kingdom, from late 1969 through the conclusion of agency participation in 1974. During a closed-door meeting of Washington policy makers on 31 March 1971, a senior CIA officer informed National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger that the agency was controlling up to 8 divisions of indigenous troops in Laos. "When the CIA reaches the point of having the largest army in Southeast Asia," retorted Kissinger, "we better review the program!" The Erawan War Volume 2 details how the CIA operation in Laos reached that point, becoming its largest paramilitary operation of the Cold War. With photos and maps, it covers the wide range of CIA-supported units in Laos, from guerrilla regiments that went toe-to-toe with the North Vietnamese army in pitched campaigns, to top-secret commandos that crossed borders to wage clandestine sabotage attacks. AUTHOR: Kenneth Conboy was South East Asian policy analyst and deputy director of the Asian Studies Centre in Washington D.C., 1986-1992. Since then he has held roles in risk management companies in Indonesia, and he currently serves as Risk Management Advisory Country Manager in Indonesia. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. This is the initial of six volumes detailing the 80-year history of air-to-air missiles (AAM) as combat aircraft weapons. It is the only comprehensive book on this subject. Volume 1: Technology, Development and Operation begins with the motivation for adopting such weapons, general description and capabilities of AAM, aircraft integration fundamentals and challenges, and how the missiles are employed. This is followed by a description of how AAM are developed as programs of a nation's military to include testing and fielding, and a description of the elements making up a missile to include the aircraft interface, the airframe, flight control and autopilot, the seeker head and guidance system, motor, warhead, and more. The various design choices for each of these elements are described, with advantages and disadvantages, and with diagrams to support understanding. The many seeker head/guidance choices selected over the decades are each described along with relative benefits and detractors. Again, diagrams assist reader understanding. The technology evolution underlying improvement of these systems is a key point. The content of the six generations of missile is then outlined. Finally, the fundamentals of employing AAM in combat are described, again with supporting drawings. This includes discussion of support, training, setting up the intercept for advantageous use of the AAM being carried by the fighter, plus the countermeasures and counter-countermeasures that may be employed. All this leads to an understanding of why many AAM shots miss their target. All this content supports understanding the weapons introduced in subsequent volumes plus their combat successes and failures. Subsequent volumes will each examine a generation of missiles and their service employment, from the earliest models of the Second World War through to the most up to date designs currently in service around the world. Each volume is extensively illustrated with contemporary photographs, diagrams, figures and charts, and includes the atWar series' signature colour artworks. AUTHOR: William J. Norton is retired from a flight test engineering career that spanned 40 years, including 20 years as a US Air Force officer. This included serving as aircrew aboard test aircraft. He has held numerous positions in many organizations on dozens of aerospace programs spanning all aircraft types. He has penned scores of technical papers, seventeen books, and a multitude of magazine articles. Bill holds a Masters in Aeronautical Engineering and has taught technical courses at the college-level. In addition, he is a civil pilot with numerous ratings, restored and operates a DHC-1 Chipmunk, and built a Rutan Long-EZ. It has been over four decades since the Union Jack was lowered on the colony of Rhodesia, but the bitter and divisive civil war that preceded it has continued to endure as a textbook counter-insurgency campaign fought between a mobile, motivated and highly trained Rhodesian security establishment and two constituted liberations movements motivated, resourced and inspired by the ideals of communist revolution in the third world. A complicated historical process of occupation and colonization set the tone as early as the late 1890s for what would at some point be an inevitable struggle for domination of this small, landlocked nation set in the southern tropics of Africa. The story of the Rhodesian War, or the Zimbabwean Liberation Struggle, is not only an epic of superb military achievement, and revolutionary zeal and fervour, but is the tale of the incompatibility of the races in southern Africa, a clash of politics and ideals and, perhaps more importantly, the ongoing ramifications of the past upon the present, and the social and political scars that a war of such emotional underpinnings as the Rhodesian conflict has had on the modern psyche of Zimbabwe. The Rhodesian War was fought with finely tuned intelligence-gathering and -analysis techniques combined with a fluid and mobile armed response. The practitioners of both have justifiably been celebrated in countless histories, memoirs and campaign analyses, but what has never been attempted has been a concise, balanced and explanatory overview of the war, the military mechanisms and the social and political foundations that defined the crisis. This book does all of that. The Rhodesian War is explained in digestible detail and in a manner that will allow enthusiasts of the elements of that struggle - the iconic exploits of the Rhodesian Light Infantry, the SAS, the Selous Scouts, the Rhodesian African Rifles, the Rhodesia Regiment, among other well-known fighting units - to embrace the wider picture in order to place the various episodes in context. 126 b/w photos, 10 b/w maps, 7 colour profiles, 4 colour photos, 4 colour maps It has been over four decades since the Union Jack was lowered on the colony of Rhodesia, but the bitter and divisive civil war that preceded it has continued to endure as a textbook counter-insurgency campaign fought between a mobile, motivated and highly trained Rhodesian security establishment and two constituted liberations movements motivated, Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

The concept of hybrid threats has in recent years become an integral part of the security and national security policies adopted by the European Union (EU), North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and indeed most Western countries. The concept also frequently appears in headline news. Yet, military intelligence services and security services seem unable to agree on how to define the phenomenon, or on how to take efficient countermeasures against them. In this important work, the author examines the rise of hybrid threats in the post-Cold War environment and provides extensive examples of the nature of the threat and case studies of how hybrid threats have been employed by state and non-state actors. AUTHOR: Professor Michael Fredholm von Essen is an historian and former military analyst who has published extensively on the history, defence strategies, security policies, and energy sector developments of Eurasia. He currently is the Head of Research and Development at IRI, an independent research institute. Educated at Uppsala, Stockholm, and Lund Universities, Michael Fredholm von Essen has lectured, including during conferences and as visiting professor, at numerous institutions and universities around the world. He is the author of a large number of books, articles, and academic papers, including Muscovy's Soldiers: The Emergence of the Russian Army, 1462-1689 (Helion, 2018); Charles XI's War: The Scanian War between Sweden and Denmark, 1675-1679 (Helion, 2018); Transnational Organized Crime and Jihadist Terrorism: Russian-Speaking Networks in Western Europe (Routledge, 2017); Understanding Lone Actor Terrorism: Past Experience, Future Outlook, and Response Strategies (Routledge, 2016); Afghanistan Beyond the Fog of War: Persistent Failure of a Rentier State (NIAS, 2018); Eight Banners and Green Flag: The Army of the Manchu Empire and Qing China, 1600-1850 (Pike and Shot Society, 2009); and a large number of articles on early modern warfare in the Arquebusier, the journal of the Pike and Shot Society. 4 b/w photos, 41 colour photos, 6 colour illustrations, 2 colour profiles, 1 colour map, 5 tables, 2 diagrams In this important work, the author examines the rise of hybrid threats in the post-Cold War environment and provides extensive examples of the nature of the threat and case studies of how hybrid threats have been employed by state and non-state actors. Soviet military doctrine long placed great emphasis upon the use of massed artillery and its use was honed to a fine art during the Great Patriotic War. In the early part of the Cold War this arm was allowed to atrophy in an era where it was expected that nuclear weapons would dominate the battlefield from the outset. During the 1960s, 70s and 80s however the Soviet artillery arm underwent a renaissance and large numbers of the resulting generation of weapons systems were passed on to the inheritor states of the USSR in the 1990s. While Russia was able to maintain its Soviet-legacy artillery systems, and introduce some new developments, Ukraine was much less able to do so and in particular lacked the levels of ammunition reserves and manufacturing capability of Russia. Inevitably, Ukraine turned to the West and began to receive weapons and ammunition from NATO and allied nations. Despite the critical role gun artillery plays in the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War, the technical aspects and histories of the individual artillery systems used by both sides have received relatively little attention in English, where they are often lumped together as generic 'artillery'. This book aims to rectify this deficiency in the accessible literature and examine the major tube artillery systems and mortars employed by both sides in this conflict. War in Ukraine Volume 9: Artillery 2022-2024 is illustrated throughout with original colour photographs and the atWar series signature colour artworks. AUTHOR: Wen Jian Chung is a PhD student at the University of California, Irvine with a long-term interest in tank development, particularly Soviet, Russian and Ukrainian tanks. 12 b/w photos, 102 colour photos, 18 colour profiles, 29 diagrams, 8 tables Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

When it was founded in 1949, the People's Republic of China was a backward agricultural state with no industrial base to speak of and no armaments industry of its own. From the very beginning, Mao Tse Dng, the founder of the state, endeavoured to develop his own modern defence industry in order to gain weight on the international stage. Part of this effort was the development of a domestic aerospace industry with massive support from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR, colloquially 'Soviet Union'). Until the two countries broke up in 1961 due to ideological differences, more than 100 aviation companies were established with Soviet help and the licensed production of numerous aircraft types from trainers to heavy bombers was started. The last of these was the MiG-21, which is reproduced in China as the J-7. It took more than 10 years before the country, weakened by the 'Great Leap Forward' and the Cultural Revolution, succeeded at all in producing this comparatively complex aircraft. Only the comprehensive reforms after the death of state founder Mao created the basis for a return to orderly production of a technology that was already two decades old and outdated. The rapprochement with the West in the early 1980s made it possible, in part, to overcome the technological backlog. The integration of Western avionics into the Soviet airframe did not make the J/F-7 a modern combat aircraft like the F-16 and MiG-29 developed at the same time, but it increased its combat value to such an extent that it became an export success for the Third World. However, even more important was the access to Western technologies, later also for air-to-air missiles, which were initially, simply copied and later formed the basis for in-house developments of modern equipment and weapons systems. When cooperation with the West ended abruptly after the Tiananmen massacre of 1989, Chinese engineers and scientists had accumulated enough know-how to provide their own impetus in the further development of the J/F-7 family. Due to the combination of new aerodynamics and modern avionics, true multi-role combat aircraft were finally created which today, still spearhead their air forces in numerous countries in Asia and Africa. When the production of the J/F-7 finally ended in 2016, two generations of modern fighters based on this design were coming off the production line in China, and the prototypes of the fifth generation were already flying. The experience gained by China's aerospace industry in developing the J/F-7 from a day fighter to a multi-role fighter has made this success possible. The book deals with both the technical development of the J/F-7 family and its actual or potential use in more than a dozen countries on five continents. 220-240 colour photos, 1 map, 20 colour profiles, 1 table Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

The first authoritative and richly illustrated account about air warfare over former Yugoslavia and the last years of the Yugoslav Air Force and Air Defence, in period 1991-1992. Following a brief war in Slovenia, and months of skirmishes and minor fighting in Croatia, during the autumn of 1991 the crisis in Yugoslavia culminated in an all-out war. The task of the Yugoslav Air Force and Air Defence (JRV i PVO) was to support friendly forces, foremost in regards of unblocking dozens of garrisons of the Yugoslav National Army (JNA), which the Croats were besieging. Decades of ideological pressure during the Communist era and the ideology of brotherhood and unity of the ethnic- and religious communities in the multinational Yugoslavia created an independent political factor within the federal armed forces. However, in the fall of 1991, the top brass of the armed forces lacked a clear- and realisable plan. Following several bitter battles, and extensive negotiations, the Croatian authorities have left many of the besieged JNA units to go. However, the Serbs in Croatia, supported by the federal armed forces, then continued to fight for the control over the areas under their control, until the war culminated in major showdowns for Dubrovnik and Vukovar. The official truce between Croatia and what was left of Yugoslavia by the time was set for 3 January 1992. However, it was followed by a series of incidents, causing deaths on both sides. Moreover, while the JNA peacefully withdrew from Macedonia, in February of the same year, new tensions erupted between the three dominant ethnic- and religious groups of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Indeed, a war erupted in that former republic of Yugoslavia only a month laterk with the forces loyal to the official government in Sarajevo, dominated by Muslims, and those of the Bosnian Croats, fought not only the JNA, but also the local Serbs. On 4 May 1992, the presidency in Beograd decided to withdraw the JNA from Bosnia and Herzegovina within 15 days, and to reform what was left of Yugoslavia as a new state. For the JRV i PVO, this was a particularly traumatic experience: out of a force including 860 fixed- and rotor-wing aircraft before the war, it was meanwhile down to about 770, but had to cram these into air bases of what was only 40% of the former state. Moreover, and before soon, writing was on the wall for the entire service, which was to be reformed as the air force of the Former Yugoslavia. Based on author's unique approach to local archives and first-hand sources, and illustrated by over 120 photographs and colour profiles, the Yugoslav Air Force in Battles for Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina is the first ever authoritative account on combat operations of the former Yugoslav Air Force in the conflict that shaped the modern-day southern Europe, and an indispensable source of reference on contemporary military history of this part of the World. 59 colour photos, 17 b/w photos, 18 colour profiles, 3 colour illustrations, 5 colour maps, 2 b/w maps, 11 tables Based on authors unique approach to local archives and first-hand sources, and illustrated by over 120 photographs and color profiles, this book is the first ever authoritative account on combat operations of the former Yugoslav Air Force in the conflict that shaped the modern-day southern Europe. Examines the predecessors to the Wagner Group, its activities in a number of conflicts around the world, and its armed mutiny against the top leadership of the Russian Federation. The Wagner Group is symbolic of Russia's deployment of private military companies (PMCs) to exercise influence in Africa, the Middle East and Europe since the mid-2010s. Nominally an independent commercial enterprise, but actually operating on behalf of the Russian government, and in close cooperation with the Ministry of Defence and its Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU), the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), and the Federal Security Service (FSB), it has been deployed to perform a very wide range of military and paramilitary tasks, provide security, and collect intelligence. Through much of its existence, the activity of the Wagner Group appears to have been clandestine and poorly recorded. In practice, the operating principles of this PMC have been very similar to those of numerous similar enterprises from the West. Cold War Berlin: An Island City Volume 3, US Forces in Berlin - Preparing for War, 1945-1994 examines how the American Berlin Brigade prepared for war: the units that made up the brigade, how it trained, how it was equipped, how it planned to defend the city, and also looks the Special Forces units that served alongside it. At the end of the Second World War, the victorious Allies split Germany into three zones of occupation, and Berlin into four sectors, one each for the British, Americans, French and Soviets. The city was surrounded by around 420,000 Soviet troops, the shock troops who would lead the invasion of Western Europe if that day came, and 180,000 East German troops spread across East Germany, and tens of thousands of paramilitary police. US Forces in Berlin - Preparing for War looks at how the Berlin Brigade, the 5,000 strong American component of the 33,000 Western military presence in the city prepared to defend West Berlin from the Communist threat. US Forces in Berlin - Preparing for War is the second of two volumes covering US forces in Berlin during the Cold War, from their arrival in July 1945, through to the departure of American Berlin Brigade in 1994. The text is richly illustrated with photographs, illustrations, diagrams, tables, maps, plans, and color profiles, and is printed in full color throughout.
