Había vivido veinte años en la misma casa de huéspedes, aquella en donde yo di con él, y otros veinticinco en otras muchas casas de huéspedes. Es decir, que se había pasado la vida en casas de huéspedes. La tal casa, en donde al Destino plugo juntarnos pasajeramente, era repugnante de todo punto. Pasé allí sólo dos meses, y eso porque la simpatía y deleitoso magisterio de don Amaranto me persuadieron a dilatar mi estada. Su irónica pedantería y pintoresca erudición me encantaban; pero lo que más me movía a venerar a don Amaranto era el hecho de que hubiera permanecido tantos años en semejante alojamiento, soportando como si tal cosa, sin perder de romana en lo físico ni la ecuanimidad interior, privaciones, entrometimientos, escándalos, desaliños, ponzoñas; en suma, un trato miserable y homicida. Y es que había profesado pertenecer a las casas de huéspedes, como a una orden religiosa, y hecho voto de pupilaje perpetuo. Él mismo me lo declaró un día, de sobremesa. Digo de sobremesa, que no de sobrecomida. Un detalle de las sobremesas de aquella casa, es que no había palillos de dientes; no por razones de economía, ni menos por escrúpulos de aseo y urbanidad, como es uso entre anglosajones, los cuales consideran el acto de mondar las rendijas de la dentadura como una necesidad de orden vergonzoso y clandestino, sino porque no había ocasión, y por ende los palillos holgaban.
