Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Socrates, one of the first of the great philosophers, left no written works. What survives of his thought are second-hand descriptions of his teachings and conversationsincluding, most famously, the accounts of his trial and execution composed by his friend, student, and philosophical successor, Plato. In Euthyphro, Socrates examines the concept of piety and displays his propensity for questioning Athenian authorities. Such audacity is not without consequence, and in the Apology we find Socrates defending himself in court against charges of impiety and corruption of the youth. Crito depicts Socrates choosing to accept the resulting death sentence rather than escape Athens and avoid execution. All three dialogues are included here, as is the final scene of Phaedo, in which the sentence is carried out. Platos account of the last days of Socrates, presented in a lively new translation. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The Discourse on the Method for Reasoning Well and for Seeking Truth in the Sciences offers a concise presentation and defense of Rene Descartess method of intellectual inquiry a method that greatly influenced both philosophical and scientific reasoning in the early modern world. Descartess timeless writing strikes an uncommon balance of novelty and familiarity, offering arguments concerning knowledge, science, and metaphysics (including the famous I think, therefore I am) that are as compelling in the twenty-first century as they were in the seventeenth. Ian Johnstons new translation of the original French text is modern, clear, and thoroughly annotated, ideal for readers unfamiliar with Descartess intellectual context. An approachable introduction engages both the historical and the philosophical aspects of the text, helping the reader to understand the concepts and arguments contained therein. Descartes Discourse, presented here in an engaging new translation, is a perfect point of entry into early modern philosophical and scientific thought. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Did it matter then, she asked herself, walking towards Bond Street, did it matter that she must inevitably cease completely? All this must go on without her; did she resent it; or did it not somehow become consoling to believe that death ended absolutely? But that somehow in the streets of London, on the ebb and flow of things, here, there, she survived. Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) is now generally recognised as the author of two of the twentieth century's greatest literary works, To the Lighthouse and Mrs. Dalloway, both of which employ a style of narration that has come to be known as ""stream of consciousness,"" which focuses on the interior-and not always logical-movement of thoughts that make up the better part of most people's psyches. Woolf's 1925 novel, Mrs. Dalloway, is about the casualties of early twentieth-century life, and she explores the gendered forms of mental illness, and the social repercussions of feminism, homosexuality, and colonialism. The central consciousness is that of the title character, Clarissa Dalloway, on the day of a dinner party that she is giving. Moving through the relatively uneventful preparations, the arrival of the guests, and the rituals of hosting a party, Clarissa's thoughts wander across past, present, and into the future. Throughout the relatively mundane actions through which the book follows her, she is slowly revealed by means of her interior monologues of memory and reflection to be a most interesting person who has been squeezed by society into a rather ordinary role. The narrative broadens to include others in her life, most notably Septimus Warren Smith, a shell-shock victim whose life has had no direct connection to Clarissa's, but who in many ways can be read as a male parallel. This Broadview edition provides a reliable text at a very reasonable price. It contains textual notes but no appendices or introduction. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. When Melville completed Moby-Dick, he wrote to Nathaniel Hawthorne that I have written a wicked book, and feel spotless as a lamb. The Broadview Moby-Dick: A Selection offers a robust sampling of chapters, chosen to give students a thorough initiation into the novels plot, as well as into the full range of its themes and stylistic experimentation. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Uncle Toms Cabin may well have excited more controversy than any other work of fiction in American history. Welcomed by many abolitionists and met with indignation by supporters of slavery, it gave crucial impetus to the antislavery movement, and its characters and dramatic scenes were quickly absorbed into the nations consciousness; at the same time, its employment of racial stereotypes and emphasis on Christian nonresistance in the face of violence left behind a troubling legacy that was debated by black Americans in the nineteenth century and that culminated in the popular tradition of Tom shows that persisted well into the twentieth century. With a brief but robust introduction, judicious selection of the most essential and frequently taught portions of the novel, and examples of contemporary responses, this abridged edition of Harriet Beecher Stowes antislavery classic provides an overview of the novels plot, themes, and rhetorical strategies, and is ideal for classroom use. This volume is one of a number of editions that have been drawn from the pages of the acclaimed Broadview Anthology of American Literature. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The best-known work by Aphra Behn, Oroonoko is an important contribution to the development of the novel in English. Though it predates the British abolition movement by more than a century, it is also an early depiction of the dehumanizing racial violence of slavery; Oroonoko tells of a noble African prince enslaved and taken to Surinam, where he leads a violent revolt of the enslaved. This edition offers helpful annotations, an informative introduction, and contextual materials situating Oroonoko in the context of seventeenth-century slavery and the colonization of Surinam. The early reception of Oroonoko is also documented. This edition of Aphra Behns most famous work places it in its transatlantic historical context. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Julius Caesar is a key link between Shakespeares histories and his tragedies. Unlike the Caesar drawn by Plutarch in a source text, Shakespeares Caesar is surprisingly modern: vulnerable and imperfect, a powerful man who does not always know himself. The open-ended structure of the play insists that revealing events will continue after the play ends, making the significance of the history we have just witnessed impossible to determine in the play itself. John D. Coxs introduction discusses issues of genre, characterization, and rhetoric, while also providing a detailed history of criticism of the play. Appendices provide excerpts from important related works by Lucretius, Plutarch, and Montaigne. An authoritative and unique edition of Shakespeares great history play, incorporating visual and historical materials. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Jane Austens Emma (1816) tells the story of the coming of age of Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, who had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her. Typical for the novels time, Emmas transition to womanhood is accomplished through courtshipboth of those around her and, ultimately, her own. As in other Austen works, education and courtship go hand in hand, and Emmas process of learning to relinquish the power of having her own way is also a process of falling in love. However, in Emma this classic plot is both complicated by and reflective of a collection of contemporary issues, assumptions, and anxieties that highlight just how political even the most conventional of courtship plots can be.This Broadview edition includes a critical introduction and an extensive collection of historical documents relating to the composition and reception of the novel, the social implications of Englands shift from a rural agrarian to an urban industrial economy, the role of women in provincial society, and the contemporary preoccupation with health and the treatment of illness. Broadview Austen editions are second to none. Devoney Looser, University of Missouri, Columbia Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Kants landmark essay On Perpetual Peace is as timely, relevant, and inspiring today as when it was first written over 200 years ago. In it we find a forward-looking vision of a world respectful of human rights, dominated by liberal democracies, and united in a cosmopolitan federation of diverse peoples. The essay is an expression of global idealism that remains an enduring antidote to the violence and cynicism that are all too often on display in international relations and foreign affairs. This book features a fresh and vigorous translation of Kants essay by Ian Johnston, and it includes an extended introduction by philosopher Brian Orend. The introduction situates Kants essay in its historical context and offers a substantial analysis, section by section, of the essay itself. In doing so, Orend not only discusses Kants personal life and the history of the perpetual peace tradition, he also shows how Kants provocative ideas have inspired and infused our own time, especially the concept of a global alliance of free societies committed to respecting human rights. Kants essay remains an enduring antidote to the violence and cynicism that is all-too-often on display in international relations and foreign affairs. It is presented here in a new translation with contextual apparatus. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The story of a young soldier, Henry Fleming, who flees a Civil War battle, The Red Badge of Courage has been celebrated for its depiction of both the physical action of battle and the protagonists internal struggle. Despite the precise and vivid descriptions of the scenes of battle in his fiction, Stephen Crane was not born until six years after the war had ended and never saw military service. His novel altered the tradition of war literature in its naturalistic emphasis on a single, ordinary man facing the horrors of battle. This edition includes an important new introduction by James Nagel, author of the book Stephen Crane and Literary Impressionism and former president of the Stephen Crane Society. Historically significant reviews and commentary from the publication of the novel in 1895 are included, along with the deleted Chapter 12 from the novel. The short story The Veteran, in which the protagonist appears as an elderly man, is also included. Undoubtedly, this edition of Americas major Civil War novel will become indispensable to any serious reader of Stephen Crane. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The Great Gatsby is widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of American fiction. It tells of the mysterious Jay Gatsbys grand effort to win the love of Daisy Buchanan, the rich girl who embodies for him the promise of the American dream. Deeply romantic in its concern with self making, ideal love, and the power of illusion, it draws on modernist techniques to capture the spirit of the materialistic, morally adrift, post-war era that Fitzgerald dubbed the jazz age. Gatsbys aspirations remain inseparable from the rhythms and possibilities suggested by modern consumer culture, popular song, and the movies, while his obstacles remain inseparable from contemporary American anxieties about social mobility, racial mongrelization, and the fate of Western civilization. This Broadview edition sets the novel in context by providing readers with a critical introduction and crucial background material about the consumer culture in which Fitzgerald was immersed, the novels composition and reception, and the jazz age. The second edition has been updated throughout, with expanded writings on race and immigration in 1920s America from Anzia Yezierska, Alain Locke, and others. An updated version of Michael Nowlins acclaimed edition of The Great Gatsby. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. That James Joyces The Dead forms an extraordinary conclusion to his collectionDubliners, there can be no doubt. But as many have pointed out, The Dead may equally well be read as a novellaarguably, one of the finest novellas ever written. The Dead, a story of public life, as Joyce categorized it, was written more than a year after Joyce had finished the other stories in the collection, and was meant to redress what he felt was their unnecessary harsh[ness]. Set on the feast of the epiphany, it is a haunting tale of connection and of alienation, reflecting, in the words of Stanislaus Joyce (Jamess brother and confidant), the nostalgic love of a rejected exile. The present volume highlights The Dead for readers who wish to focus on that great work in a concise volumeand for university courses in which it is not possible to cover all of Dubliners. But it also gives a strong sense of how that story is part of a larger whole. Stories from each of the other sections of Dubliners have been included, and a wide range of background materials is included as well, providing a vivid sense of the literary and historical context out of which the work emerged. The Dead and three other stories from James Joyces Dubliners is presented in a stand-alone volume with introductory and contextual materials closely based on those found in volume 6 of The Broadview Anthology of British Literature. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The fourteenth-century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is one of the greatest classics of English literature, but one of the least accessible to most twentieth-century readers. Written in an obscure dialect, it is far more difficult to digest in the original than are most other late medieval English works. Yet any translation is bound to lose much of the flavour of the original. This edition of the poem offers the original text together with a facing-page translation. With the alliterative Middle English before the reader, James Winny provides a non-alliterative and sensitively literal rendering in modern English. This edition also provides an introduction, explanatory and textual notes, a further note on some words that present particular difficulties, and, in the appendices, two contemporary stories, The Feast of Bricriu and The Knight of the Sword, which provide insight on the poem. This is the best translation of Sir Gawain Gordon Teskey, Cornell University Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. In her final play, Aphra Behn looks across the Atlantic and reimagines Bacons Rebellion, the notorious revolt whose participants took up arms against the government of colonial Virginia with the aim of driving the Indigenous population from the region. Heavily fictionalized and featuring a memorable cast of both heroic and comic characters, Behns long-neglected tragicomedy is an important and entertaining contribution to the catalogue of transatlantic and Restoration literature. This edition supplements the play with an informative introduction and a robust selection of historical documents that situate it in the context of the historical rebellion and of late-seventeenth-century discourses around empire and colonization. A new critical edition of Aphra Behns final play. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Mary Shelley's deceptively simple story of Victor Frankenstein and the creature he brings to life, first published in 1818, is now more widely read than any other work of the Romantic period. Tracing the troubled relationship between Frankenstein and his creation in a complex, multilayered narrative, the story retains its hold on the reader even as it spins off ideas in rich profusion. "This is the best, the most thoughtful advanced school edition of Frankenstein ever done." -- Jerome McGann, University of Virginia Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
