Añadir al carritoTrade Paperback. Condición: Very Good. First Edition. 70 Pages. Tight, bright book with a pictorial cover. Color illustrations on every page with one foldout covering four pages. A little historical background. The dawn of civilization and the ocean Propulsion was the next evolution in ship design by integrating sails and oars, followed thereafter by direction devises and helm controls. These two innovations rapidly influenced the creation of new and ingenious ships. Ancient Egypt (circa 4000 B.C.) was the cradle of Western naval architecture thanks to its amazing scientific achievements. Hieroglyphic writing on bas-relief stones and ceramic clay illustrate without a doubt the first boats. One can see fishing and the transport of goods, most likely on a river or lake. The Nile River allowed most of Egypt's products to be moved by water, as the numerous irrigation canals inland expedited the movement of heavy loads. In Pharaoh Sahure's tomb is found a relief dating from 2500 B.C. depicting a ship suitable to sail on the oceans. The Aegean Islands, in particular Crete (circa 3000 B.C.), developed a commercial sailing route with Egypt, Syria and Mesopotamia. One can surmise that the people of Crete invented the ships used by the Egyptians. The Phoenicians, great sailors and merchants, were the first to navigate beyond the coastline. Later Greeks and Carthaginians would take their place in dominating the ocean. The Diorama of the Battle of Mylae is a complex model naval scene with over 100 figures with different attitudes and boats in a V formation. The main view of the Diorama shows the flank of the Roman ship and the prow of the Carthaginian boat where the main action takes place. Contents in Ten Chapters: Sailing in Ancient Times Roman Sailing, The Biremes, The Battle of Mylae, Starting The Diorama, Construction of the Carthaginian Ship, Painting The Roman ship, Modelling and Painting figures, and Modelling and Painting Water.

Añadir al carritoFirst Edition. First Edition. quarto, printed heavy paper wrappers. 72pp. Andrea Press, With illustrations in full color by Dionisio Alvarez Cueto. The Chasseurs a' Cheval de la Garde Impe'riale was the Emperor Napoleon's habitual escort and a valuable cavalry reserve in battle. It was a unit formed of light cavalrymen of proven courage but also of outstanding moral fiber who had to serve as an example to the rest of the army. This book recounts the history of this legendary unit, a unit whose antecedants can be traced back to the first battles won by Napoleon in Italy and to the burning sands of the Egyptian desert. Indeed a unit that paid the price demanded by glory and the ignominy of war, with its blood spilled on the plateaus of Austerlitz, the frozen countryside of Prussia and on the streets of Madrid. Each Chassear a' Cheval of the Imperial Guard, like Napoleon, was a hero who had confronted and conquered the fear of death. Their memory continues to inspire the modern would-be hero. As new. quarto, printed heavy paper wrappers.

Añadir al carritoFirst Edition. First Edition. quarto, tan boards in pictorial dust jacket. 220pp. Andrea Press, T.E. Lawrence and the Arab Revolt: An Illustrated Guide provides a compelling photographic overview of the life of Lawrence of Arabia and the Arab Revolt that he helped lead. Many books have been written about Lawrence but this book will provide many rare and unseen photographs to illustrate his role in the revolt and the people who fought with and against him.Using photographs from public archives and private collections, Joseph Berton has assembled an impressive selection of images that will provide an important visual resource for military historians, figure modelers, and Lawrence enthusiasts. Special chapters include unpublished photographs of the Hejaz Armoured Car Battery, the French troops that supported Lawrence and the pilots and planes of the Royal Flying Corps that assisted with the Arab Revolt. Additional information will cover the award of the Al Nahda, presented by the King of the Hejaz to over one hundred officers who had helped in some way in their war against Turkey. Photographs showing actual Arab robes worn by Lawrence, uniforms of Arab and Turkish soldiers and weapons, details of Bedouin clothing, camel saddles and rugs are provided with detailed captions. Photographs taken by Harry Chase, printed from original glass plate negatives, are also shown in amazing detail. Final chapters include a research guide to the major Lawrence collections in public institutions, some words of advice for the Lawrence collector today and information on visiting important Lawrence sites. As new. quarto, tan boards in pictorial dust jacket.
