This volume comprises the text of a lecture delivered by Professor Annemarie Schimmel in English at al-Furqa-n's Eagle House together with an Arabic translation. Based on an outs…tanding knowledge of Arabic and all major Asian Muslim languages, Professor Schimmel brought together and thoroughly examined an immense volume of new data from a wide range of sources. This book demonstrates how Muslim sufi poets throughout the Islamic world have been fascinated by the animal kingdom believing that animals can be considered to be symbols of spiritual truth. # 20702.

Soft cover. Condición: New. 71 pages : illustrations ; 20 cm. In English with some Arabic. This lecture took place in London, on 23rd November 2015, and resonated with the news that materialised earlier that year about the discovery of some fragments of Qur an kept at the Mingana Collection in the Birmingham University Library.…The assertion that the document - kept at Birmingham University - is part of one of the world s oldest copies of the Qur an, was strongly disputed by many scholars in the field of codicology and palaeography, who pointed out that the science of carbon dating is contradicted by other evidence. Among these scholars was Professor Qasim Al-Samarrai, Professor Emeritus of Palaeography and Codicology. Professor Al-Samarrai s immediate reaction - after the news spread about the Birmingham fragments - was: The fragments of the Qur an folios that were found at Birmingham are not at all what they are claimed to be. They in fact belong to the end of the 2nd and the beginning of the 3rd century AH (after Hijrah), if not later. All the features in them: the script, dotting, use of gold and red ink, as well as the separation of verses (Ayat) and chapters (Suwar).etc., indicate that they might have been written on parchments older than the script. Therefore, they are not as early as thought. Surprisingly enough, Berlin and Tubingen claim the same with their own fragments." In this lecture, Professor Al-Samarrai gives a detailed insight on the Birmingham folios, with a special focus on Qur anic manuscripts palaeographical aspects in general, the accuracy of carbon dating tests, the Uthman copies of the Qur an, as well as other aspects related to this topic.

Al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation 5th public lecture 11 November 1996. The pivotal theme of this book is the mystical orientation in the poetry and thoughts of Pakistan…i Muslim poet, Muhammad Iqbal. Iqbal. discovered the secrets of creative love through the gate of sufism. He considered such love, according to Schimmel, as the force which creates values and can never be content with its creation, a force that changes man incessantly. He believed love an experience that may offer itself to the believer at the middle of the road or at its very end, the supreme form of the creation of values and ideals and the endeavour towards achieving these. #14257.

Soft cover. Condición: New. 74 pages in English. This lecture focuses in brief on the history of the critical editing of Islamic manuscripts, to include present and future research, with particular attention given to works conducted by orientalists. In this book the author highlights the skills of an editor involved in criticall…y editing a manuscript. He also lists the most important characteristics required of a professional editor. The author explains the methodology used by orientalists in their criticism of Arabic texts. The methods used by scholars of Az'har in critically editing manuscripts are also presented. The book addresses a number of areas related to the field, such as the main problems faced by practitioners, how to work with a manuscript, and technical issues such as 'when to bring out draft sections of a text when the corrected version is present'. The book emphasises the importance of ijazat (licences), sama'at (verified listening), tamalluk notes (noted ownership of the manuscript), waqf (endowments) and the knowledge of the terminology involved in critically editing. The author also discusses the historical relationship between the printing press and critical editing. This includes a look at how the widespread use of paper and the progress in printing effected book publication.

This book covers a highly important topic, relating to the defense of the Noble Prophetic Sunnah, which withstood attacks and criticism by opposing parties since the era of examining narrator memory (talqin) to the period of foundation (ta'sis). Indeed, leading traditionis…ts (muhaddithun) and classical legal theorists (usuliyyun) have exerted mammoth effort in its service, reaching an apogee, founded on juristic effort (ijtihad), and argumentation (istidlāl) in protecting chains of narration (sanad) and hadith text (matn) from insertion and defect of any type. They validated, emended, and contextualised them; furthermore, they documented modalities of acceptance and rejection, and selected the terminology most fitting to reflect occasions (munasabat) and objectives.

'According to Muhammad Salih al-Mahdi, music as part of Islamic civilisation has a special character distinguishing it from the music of other civilisation…s throughout history. It represents the epitome of what is best in all the people and nations which adopted Islam as their faith. For Islam was open to all cultures and their arts provided they had no connection with paganism and did not violate the basic precepts of the faith, especially that of the oneness of God. Islam cherishes good taste and beautiful voices and the Prophet himself listened to and praised the beauty of the voice of Abu Musá al-Ashari, especially in reciting the Qur'an.'.

'It is probably difficult to encompass the entire sphere of cookery and cuisine throughout the history of Islamic civilisation. The landscape is vast, the actors are countless and their tastes endlessly varied; the nature of the land is uneven and i…ts bounty uncertain and irregular, with abundance and scarcity locked in perpetual rivalry. This relatively brief talk will not even attempt a rough outline of the subject of food, cookery and dining in the Muslim world; this paper is to present a preliminary framework for a research project that would deal with all elements related, directly and indirectly, to the culture of food. Arab-Islamic civilisation has bequeathed many a document on the subject. The research should embrace broader and more remote topics such as agriculture, the source of food provided by the land, the organised trade that brought rare spices from eastern Asia to the Arab world along established land and sea routes, tableware and its manufacture from different kinds of wood, copper and pottery and the identification of the properties of individual plants and spices used in medicine and food.'.

Soft cover. Condición: New. 1st Edition. 58 pages : illustrations ; 20 cm. The book at hand focuses on the importance of scientific commentaries, especially manuscripts on astronomy, authored between the thirteenth and the sixteenth century. Dr Saliba demonstrates that particular commentaries were distinguished by the introducti…on of new scientific thinking, and also a level of astronomical mathematical sophistication that outmatched any of the earlier works that were produced within the Islamic civilisation, and, in some instances, even surpassed the contemporary scientific works that were produced in Europe at the time. Dr Saliba attributes the lack of scholarly attention to late scientific commentaries to a number of reasons, most prominently: the difficulty in reading late commentaries, absence of explanatory illustrations, and a perpetuated misconception that following the classical or golden age of Islam, there was nothing worth studying in terms of cultural output.

Soft cover. Condición: New. 1st Edition. 84 pages in Arabic. This important and engaging lecture focused on a highly significant issue centred on the most important objective in the Noble Qur'an. The lecture was delivered by Professor Mohamed Salim El-Awa as part of the proceedings of the 2nd training course on "The objectives o…f the Noble Qur'an" held in Mohammedia (Morocco) on 4-5 May 2016 (26-27 Rajab 1437H). The course was jointly organised by the Centre for the Study of the Philosophy of Islamic Law (London), the Maqasid Research & Studies Centre (Rabat), and the Department of Islamic Studies, Faculty of Letters & Humanities in Mohammedia. The content of this coherent lecture, addressing a topic of singular importance, includes a comprehensive definition of justice, justice from the Qur'an text, achieving justice through prohibition of injustice, justice in the stories and parables within the Qur'an, and justice according to the learned scholars. Despite the time restrictions of the course programme, Professor El-Awa skilfully presented the key elements of the topic, and discussed the different facets. He did the topic justice, presenting it in a systematic and consistent formulation, both organised and robust; a clear indication of a massive scientific effort.

'This lecture aims to explore a very important issue regarding the awareness of beauty as a universal concept which manifests itself in different ways, as well as from within the perspective of the philosophy of Islamic law (Maqasid). The topic was delivered in… an interesting and engaging way, where the philological definition of beauty was followed by the presentation of the evidences of the origin of the concept of beauty and its location within the Qur'anic perspective - since God is beautiful and loves beauty - and that our religion commends beauty as a duty and aspiration in terms of doing and being. Dr Esam El-Bashir proceeded to explain the foundations of the Maqasid-based perspective on beauty; indeed, beauty is an all-inclusive concept addressing all areas and aspects of life. Moreover, it represents an absolute value, and is connected to values, in relation to the unity between outer and inner self.'.

In his lecture, Dr Bashar Awwad Marouf explains the concept of critical edition of texts as a discipline, aimed at the production of a text as left by the author, and of which he approved at the end of his life. He then explored the view that the aim of critical editio…n is the production of a correct text without the need for any commentary, only emendation. He then addressed the contrasting view that considers commentary as essential, and indeed, some workers went to the extreme by saying: [the editor must] comment on everything. Our lecturer explained the error of both views, and summed up with the correct intermediate way, where the editor compares and grades the text copies, records the key reading variants, highlights the resources used by the author, and documents the quotes from the respective sources. In this lecture, Dr Bashar also debated the view postulating that critical edition is exclusively when there are several copies to allow collation, which in his view is not correct. He highlighted those books that had been critically edited - based on one copy - by eminent scholars and editors, such as Shaykh Aḥmad Shākir and his brother, Maḥmūd Shākir, where no researcher has ever claimed that such works are not critical editions. Furthermore, he explained in detail the difference between critical editing and commentary; critical editing being text emendation, and employing the means towards achieving that, while commentary describes how the editor may actually emend the text. He also drew attention to matters that must be taken into consideration in edition: Text uniformity: the editor follows the rules of modern writing, in the division of text into paragraphs and sections, and introduces numbering, and other elements of text organisation. Indicating the author s resources: if the author s sources can be identified, the editor must compare them with what the author presents. Verifying challenging names and genealogies: by referring back to the authoritative books, such as Al-Ikmālby Ibn Mākūwlā, and Tawđīħ al-Mushtabih by Ibn Nāṣir al-Dīn, which are among the most important books of this art.

Soft cover. Condición: New. 59, 57 pages ; 21 cm. Text in Arabic and English. Annemarie Schimmel focuses in this book on the extent to which Islamic culture has taken interest in the animal kingdom. So much so that animal names have been used as human names, animal stories have featured in literature and animals examples have be…en used to explain ideas, theories and concepts. This in addition to the many similarities drawn from the animal kingdom found in literature and poetry. Professor Schimmel has surveyed the mention of animals and birds by Muslim authors and reviewed such mentions in a number of languages in which she is proficient, namely Arabic, Turkish, Sindi and Persian. Special attention was given to poetry in this regard. She holds that animals form an important part of the Islamic heritage, as the mention of animals has been made in the Qur'an more than in any other holy book. She also points out that animals can be symbolic for profound spiritual truths.

Hardcover. Condición: New. 4, 361 pages in Arabic ; 25 cm. In this book, the reader will find a compilation of papers presenting and analysing the methodological steps that those engaged in the critical edition of literature manuscripts should follow. The book stresses the need for exceptional attention during the first stage of… the editing process, which is gathering and examining the manuscript copies of the text to be edited. It also explains the risks in altering or making a mistake in the title. In addition, this book emphasises the necessity of adhering to the methodological rules in properly documenting the text, and authenticating its attribution to the author. This is to be accomplished by following up the sources cited by the work, those quoted within the text itself, and other works who quoted the text elsewhere, and subjecting them to analysis, basing the outcomes on the gathered evidence.
