Published on the occasion of the exhibition Peggy Guggenheim: A Centennial Celebration held at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, June 12 to September 2, 1998. Near fine. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Age toning. Profusely illustrated. *** "Born into a wealthy New York family, Peggy - whose Uncle Solomon would establish the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation - participated in the cultural ferment of life in London and Paris during the 192Os and 193Os. Her friends included many of the most significant avant-garde figures of the era, such as Samuel Beckett and Marcel Duchamp. In London, she ran Guggenheim Jeune, her cutting-edge gallery devoted to contemporary art. During the months surrounding the outbreak of World War II, Peggy accelerated her purchases of abstract and Surrealist art until she was buying virtually one work every day, eventually amassing one of the most important collections of Modern art in private hands. After escaping to New York in the company of Max Ernst, she established the gallery Art of This Century, which from 1942 to 1947 featured her collection as well as the first or early solo exhibitions for such artists as Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko. In 1948, Peggy settled permanently in Venice, where her home, the eighteenth-century Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, would become the Peggy Guggenheim Collection after her death in 1979. The collection is now one of the most celebrated for visitors to Venice. Vail's essay provides important new information on the Venice years, during which Peggy kept guest books that record the visits of an astonishing array of international personalities. Pages from these guest books - published here for the first time - include unique drawings by such artists as Marc Chagall, Jean Cocteau, and Saul Weinberg." - Publisher. Size: 4to. Collectible.

At age 22 she began to exhibit and was introduced to the influential and avant-garde gallery Der Sturm in Berlin, where she was drawn to modern giants such as Marc Chagall, Vasily Kandinsky, and Paul Klee. When Rebay moved to America in 1927, she was commissioned by Solomon R. Guggenheim to paint his portrait, and from that point she began her mission to enlighten him with the art she so fervently supported. Rebay introduced Guggenheim to artists such as Kandinsky, and in 1937, he established the Solomon R. Guggenheim foundation for the magnificent collection he had purchased, based on Rebay's advice. In 1939, he and Rebay started the Museum of Non-objective painting, which, in 1959 opened as today's Guggenheim Museum in New York City. This catalogue, which accompanies the exhibition Art of Tomorrow: Hilla Rebay and Solomon R. Guggenheim, shows Rebay not only as a director and curator, but also as a prolific artist--her early abstract watercolors, drawings, abstract and figurative collages, and large-scale non-objective paintings are featured here. Also included are early masterpieces by Rebay's artist colleagues and friends Arp, Bauer, Kandinsky, Richter, and others. Not only a testament to Rebay's artistic and curatorial prowess, this book also gives touching insight into the extraordinary collaboration between her and Solomon R. Guggenheim, which resulted in one of the world's finest collections of early 20th century modernism." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: Hilla Rebay, 1910s; The path to non-objective art, by Brigitte Salmen; Hilla Rebay's friends and colleagues; Rereading the correspondence: Rebay and Kandinsky, by Vivian Endicott Barnett; Hill Rebay, 1920s-1960s; Rhythmic delight: a quest for non-objectivity, by Karole Vail; Art of tomorrow: the museum of non-objective painting; The art of tomorrow, by Jo-Anne Birnie Danzker; The music of the spheres, by Robert Rosenblum; I will make you world famous, by Roland von Rebay; Hilla Rebay chronology. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Used - Very Good. This elegant volume celebrates the 100th anniversary of Peggy Guggenheim's birth in 1898. Guggenheim's granddaughter Karole Vail provides an intimate biographical account of the collector's extraordinary life from her privileged upbringing through her friendships with such avant-garde figures as Samuel Beckett and Marcel Duchamp. Before World War II, she ran the Guggenheim Jeune gallery in London; there, she quickly accumulated a superb collection of Surrealist and abstract art. In 1942, she escaped to New York with Max Ernst and opened the landmark Art of This Century gallery, where she exhibited her collection and works by such emerging artists as Jackson Pollock. Guggenheim finally settled in Venice in the 18th-century palazzo that became the Peggy Guggenheim Collection after her death. Her guestbooks, pages from which are published here for the first time, reveal an astounding array of visitors, and drawings by Jean Arp, Marc Chagall, and Alberto Giacometti, among others. Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Peggy Guggenheim's birth, her granddaughter Karole Vail provides an intimate biographical account of the collector's life, covering her privileged upbringing, her collections of Surrealist and abstract art, and her part in founding, with Max Ernst, the landmark Art of the Century gallery in New York. 125 illustrations, 81 in color.
