Octavo, softbound (slick, photo. illus. blue wrappers), 257 pp. Near Fine. From lower cover: In Crucible of Reconstruction, Ted Tunnell unravels the Byzantine complexities of Louisiana's restoration to the Union, from the Federal occupation of New Orleans in 1862 to the downfall of the Radical Republicans a decade and a half later. With new data and fresh insight Tunnell writes about the war years and the period of Presidential Reconstruction, but his ultimate concern is Radical Reconstruction. He breaks new ground with his dissection of the uneasy coalition of Unionists, free blacks, and carpetbaggers that formed the Louisiana Republican party and struggled to create a biracial society based on equality. For a generation historians have sought to explain the destructive factionalism that crippled the southern Republican regimes. Crucible of Reconstruction shows how Republican discord was actually rooted in a larger "crisis of legitimacy." Louisiana whites viewed Republican leaders not as legitimate rulers but as criminal usurpers to be destroyed with violence. Unable to win support from whites through a "policy of peace" or to keep them at bay through a "policy of force," Louisiana Republicans became trapped in what Tunnell calls the "Contradictions of Power," a postwar Catch-22 that damned Radical leaders no matter which way they turned. Civil War, American Civil War, War between the States, Reconstruction, United States History, U. S. History, American History, Americana, U.S.-iana. aslic.
