New York, George Braziller, 2003, 145 pag., illustrations in colours and b/w, hardcover with dustjacket, quarto (as new). = McCausland (Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures, England), had helped organize an international forum in 2001 on this treasured scroll of classical Chinese art attributed to Gu Kaizhi (c. 344-c.406). Here he tours scenes illustrating the poem written in 292 entitled The Admonitions of the Instructress to the Court Ladies , interpreting its purpose, figures, calligraphy, exhibition history, and iconic status. Much of his text expands on the mores of behavior acted out by the figures in the scroll, created to admonish the viewer to right behavior. The volume is well illustrated, with color plates.

Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. The Chinese picture-scroll, a long painting or calligraphic work held within a horizontal scrolling mount, has been China's pre-eminent aesthetic format for the last two millennia. This first extended history of the picture-scroll explores its extraordinary longevity, and its adaptability to social, political and technological change. The book describes what the picture-scroll demands of a viewer, how China's artists grappled with its cultural power, and how collectors and connoisseurs have left their marks on scrolls for later generations to judge. The return to mass appeal of scrolling a media technology that seemed long outdated yet persists in our digital age provides urgent and fascinating context to this book. An examination of the picture-scroll, China's pre-eminent aesthetic format over the last two millennia. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. First Edition. Stiff crisp book in crisp dust jacket; about new. ; 10.10 X 7.40 X 1.10 inches; 368 pages; These essays address a diverse range of issues in China's narrative art and visual culture from the Ming dynasty (13681644) to the present. These studies attend to the complex ways in which images circulate in pictorial media and across the boundaries between "high art" and popular culture? Images in paintings, prints, stone engravings, and posters, as well as in film and video art. In addition, the authors examine the role of ancient exemplary stories and textual narratives, as well as their reiteration in the visual arts in early-modern and modern social and political contexts. The volume is divided into three sections: representing paradigms, interpreting literary themes and narratives, and the medium and modernity. While the essays in each section deal with concerns in the field of China's art history, an editors' introduction serves to position the topic of narrative art and introduce definitions and genre issues that run throughout the book. As a whole, the volume invites reflection on the intrinsic nature of narratives and their pictorial lives and presents new research challenging established views and paradigms.

Hardcover. Condición: New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: New. 1st Edition. Volume, measuring approximately 8" x 10.25", is, together with dust jacket, new, still in shrinkwrap. 295 pages. ""The Mongol Century" explores the visual world of China's Yuan dynasty (12711368), the spectacular but relatively short-lived regime founded by Khubilai Khan, regarded as the pre-eminent khanate of the Mongol empire. This book illuminates the Yuan era full of conflicts and complex interactions between Mongol power and Chinese heritage by delving into the visual history of its culture, considering how Mongol governance and values imposed a new order on China's culture and how a sedentary, agrarian China posed specific challenges to the Mongols' militarist and nomadic lifestyle. Shane McCausland explores how an unusual range of expectations and pressures were placed on Yuan culture: the idea that visual culture could create cohesion across a diverse yet hierarchical society, while balancing Mongol desires for novelty and display with Chinese concerns about posterity. Although in recent years exhibitions have begun to open up the inherent paradoxes of Yuan culture, this is the first book in English to adopt a comprehensive approach. It incorporates a broad range of visual media of the East Asia region to reconsider the impact Mongol culture had in China, from urban architecture and design to tomb murals and porcelain, and from calligraphy and printed paper money to stone sculpture. Fresh and invigorating, "The Mongol Century" explores, in fascinating detail, the visual culture of this brief but captivating era of East Asian history.".

Mint copy (still in publishers shrink wrap) in publishers decorated wrappers. This sumptuous book takes as its subject the pair of magnificent picture-scrolls entitled 'Song of Everlasting Sorrow' (Chogonka gakan) held in the Chester Beatty Library's Japanese collection. Created by the Kyoto Kano School master Sansetsu (1590-1651) in the early Edo period, the painting depicts the tragic love story of the Tang emperor Minghuang and his beloved concubine Yang Guifei, as told by the great Tang poet Bai Juyi in 806. Yang Guifei was one of the Four Beauties of ancient China and the beloved consort of Minghuang for many years. She was ultimately killed during the An Lushan Rebellion as the emperor was fleeing the capital because the guards blamed the rebellion on her powerful cousin and the rest of her family. This Chinese subject has had an intriguing history in Japan ever since it was first mentioned in the Tale of Genji and this spectacular book demonstrates how the Chogonka scrolls emerged from Sansetsu's long engagement with Chinese themes.
