He had a doctorate from the University of Newcastle, England, and a DSc. FI (biology) from Cambridge University. Dr Saeed's research work began in the area of preparative electrophoresis, specifically on factors affecting resolution and in the purification and crystallisation of LDH-1 from the human heart muscle, separation of polymeric ferritin; ferritin-antibody globulin conjugates for use in immuno-electron microscopy and interactions of haemoglobin A and F. The second important step in his research career was the discovery of natural mechanism to control inflammation (Saeed et.al Nature, 3 vol. 270, 32-36,1977). This was made in Bayer-Miles, UK. His interest in the biosynthesis of prostaglandins led to the discovery of endogenous inhibitors of prostaglandins synthetase (EIPS). The third major discovery was in 2007, where multiple therapeutic properties in isomers of paracetamol were identified (UK, US and Pakistan patented). Phase-1 data relating to toxicity within these isomers are extremely favourable, and if successful during clinical studies, this discovery has the potential to reshape the global OTC drug industry. Over the past 42 years, Dr Saeed was a leading innovator and researcher in his field, contributing to a better understanding of inflammation and anti-inflammatory drugs, reproductive biology and molecular mechanisms of human platelet aggregation. He published more than 1,000 research papers and held the distinction of being awarded 12 patents from Europe and North America. In 1980, he was the first Pakistani to be elected Fellow of the Royal Institute of Biology, London. In 1986, he became Fellow of Pakistan's Academy of Sciences. In 2001, he was the first Pakistani to be awarded the Hilal-i-Imtiaz for biological sciences. In 2007, Dr Saeed was designated as Professor Emeritus at the Aga Khan University, Karachi. During his career, he was awarded six honorary PhDs by universities in Pakistan, Hong Kong and Sri Lanka. He also supervised PhD students in pharmacology for leading universities and research centres in the UK, US, Hong Kong and Pakistan. His research papers have been published in the top medical journals, including Nature, Science, Lancent, Prostaglandins, Biochemical Pharmacology, British Journal of Pharmacology, and European Journal of Pharmacology. During 1967-1981, Dr Saeed served as Head of Biochemical Pharmacology Bayer-Miles Laboratories, UK, and during 1981-1983 was a senior scientist at the centre for reproductive biological sciences, Cecil H. & Ida Green Centre, University of Texas in Dallas, US. Since returning to Pakistan in 1984, he was one of the founding faculty members at the Aga Khan University, and a founding research director of the Panjwani Centre for Molecular Medicine & Drug Research, Karachi."
