"Author of 'Voyage to Baffin's Bay'" is written underneath this fine characteristic portrait of Ross sitting at the hearth with pipe and drink in hand, with printed signature.

Presentation inscription to flyleaf from Lady Rivett-Carnac to Richard Creighton in 1844 with recipient's ownership inscription to title-page, the Bertram Plimer copy with his bookplate loosely inserted. The British Admiralty had been slow in seeing the advantages of steam navigation when Ross wrote this, the first work on steam navigation by a naval officer. His plea for the new technology was borne out in practice by Ross himself, who at that time was preparing his second attempt at the North-West Passage aboard the paddle steamer Victory. A rarity of the literature.

Discoveries made by this expedition include Melville Bay, Cape York, Prince Regents Bay (Dedodes Fjord), Whale Sound, Carey's Islands, and numerous bays, capes, and mountains. Bound in original grey boards, spine rebacked with cloth. Rubbed edges and corners; dampstain affecting first four leaves. A legitimate assessment amid the advent of steam by the explorer who spent three voyages scouring the Arctic, retiring with as a Rear Admiral. The frontispiece is a fine treatment of chiaroscuro, depicting the "the James Watt Steam Packet Propelling Against a STORM;" that and the sextant plate with foxing. Since 1973 only three copies have appeared at auction.

Spine laid down in the 19th century. Edges sprinkled in red. With late 19th century tan endpapers. Title pages somewhat soiled and with several small, old library numbers. Text block is generally very clean. Hill 1489, 1511; Sabin 73371 and 74716 Each of these two rare pamphlets represent one half of the famous Ross-Sabin pamphlet war that occurred after Ross's ill fated first Arctic expedition to Baffin's Bay. In this present work Sabin defends himself and describes his duties and observations of the voyage, refuting Ross's claim to having made them himself. It seems that Ross did not make many friends on this voyage, having missed the end of Baffins Bay. Ross seemed to attract trouble and had another pamphlet war with Brathwaite and the reliability of the boilers on his second expedition. These pamphlets are rare and even more so when they occur together and in nice condition. This pair are from the Brooke-Hitching collection and sold in September 2015, in the last of 4 parts of the sale. They sold for £6,875 10 years ago.

Bookplate on front pastedown paper. Frontispiece and title page are a bit foxed, otherwise the text is very clean. Slight old repaired tear on the frontispiece. Original frontispiece plate tissue. Thirty-one illustrations. Errata slip before the text. Slightly bumped corners and spine. In very good condition. Captain John Ross (1777-1856), who was a Royal Navy Officer, first wrote A Treatise On Navigation By Steam in 1828, a year before his second Arctic Expedition. He is the first naval officer to write about steam engines. This second edition was reprinted after the second Arctic expedition by a less known publisher and appears to be scarcer. Only two copies of this edition found on copac. In this work, Ross attempts to show the merits of the use of steam engines. Mid-nineteenth century inscription on title page. It would appear the motivation for reprinting the title could be the pamphlet war that Ross had with John Braithwaite regarding the boilers on the Victory. A nice copy of a very scarce Ross title.
