Añadir al carrito0 Includes illustrations. From Zine Wiki: The Floating Bear was a newsletter that ran from 1961 to 1971, edited in New York, NY, U.S.A., first by Diane di Prima and Leroi Jones and then later, by issue 25, by Diane alone. Published nearly every month and distributed by mailing list only, it was a fantastic platform for several schools of writing to come together, including the Beat writers, the New York School, Black Mountain and other revolutionary writers of that time. Later, after issue 28, when di Prima relocated to Topanga, CA, it featured some of the San Francisco Renaissance writers. This weighty carrier of words held the works of Frank O Hara, Michael McClure, Ed Dorn, Charles Olson, Joel Oppenheimer, Diane Levertov, Phillp Whalen, Jack Spicer, Allen Ginsberg, Robert Creeley, Robert Duncan, William S. Burroughs, John Wieners and both the editors, plus many more. It was never sold and supported by the editors and donations. The people who received copies were considered part of a literary and creative community, all of them kindred spirits. It was a great tool of the times as this mimeographed newsletter would reach a few hundred people every few weeks. So, if your work was showcased, it was read and quick. 37 issues were printed. The last issue printed as 'The Intrepid-Bear Issue' (Intrepid no 20/ Floating Bear no 38. ) LeRoi Jones was arrested for homoerotic content of his play Dante's System of Hell in Issue 9. You can find a great deal about this publication in a few Diane di Prima s novels and writings. Very good. light shelf wear, mild general toning, errata sheet included.

This scarce newletter was only distributed by mailing list only with 11 double sided pages. Issue 37 finds Diane Di Prima as the sole Editor. Very eclectic cover artwork by Wally Berman. This issue proves very enticing with contributors Gary Snyder, LeRoi Jones, Kirby Doyle, Diane Di Prima, Michael McClure, Janine Pommy-Vega, David Cunliffe, Tina Morris, Lenore Kandel and Victor Hernandez Cruz. There is a reprinted essay by Gary Snyder from The San Francisco Oracle in which the first pages is not entirely clean due to printing press issues, otherwise the pages are bright and clean in consideration of age, a wonderous find.

Wraps have brown liquid stains and smudges, moderate general age toning, and small tears and creasing surrounding staple bindings and head fore corners; covers completely detached from staple binding. Text block has faint brown staining throughout (text unaffected), mild scuffing and moderate age toning along extremities. Shelved Room B. The Floating Bear was an American poetry magazine cofounded by Diane di Prima and Amiri Baraka (then known as Leroi Jones) in 1961. Named after Winnie the Pooh's pursuit of honey, The Floating Bear's purpose was the express dissemination of literary content without financial or aesthetic barriers. This particular copy was mailed to and owned by the poet and Jazz critic A.B. Spellman at his New York address, who collaborated with and ran closely in di Prima and Baraka's circles. The Floating Bear was edited, mimeographed, published, and distributed by di Prima's The Poets Press in New York; it was produced somewhat sporadically until its culmination in a large compilation issue in 1971. This particular copy, released during the infrequent period of The Floating Bear's publication is especially scarce, with this being the only recorded copy owned by Spellman. 1395184.
