Quels sont les remparts signalés jusqu'ici où se trouvent des traces de vitrification? Quelles sont les explications proposées jusqu'ici pour rendre raison de ce fait singulier? Ces explications sont-elles satisfaisantes ? Ne peut-on pas par une élude comparée de tous les monuments de ce genre connus arriver à une solution plus scientifique du problème ? Ne peut-on pas même déterminer approximativement la date de ces constructions ? Telles sont les questions que M. le capitaine Prévost se pose et qu'il cherche à résoudre. Sa brochure est certainement très intéressante. Le procédé par lequel il suppose que ces murailles ont été construites, est exposé avec une grande clarté et nous parait répondre mieux que tout ce qui avait été écrit avant lui aux objections que la vue de ces constructions fait naître dans l'esprit. Ces constructions, selon M. Prévost, seraient de l'époque romaine. Cela peut bien être; mais son raisonnement, à cet égard, nous parait moins concluant. En tout cas la question est bien posée. L'expression « mur vitrifié » désigne des vestiges archéologiques présentant des caractéristiques impliquant une chauffe à très haute température et datant d'une période comprise entre 800 et 200 ans avant J.-C. Il s'agit le plus souvent de construction composées de blocs de grès ou de granite soudés entre eux par un mortier noirâtre, verdâtre ou rougeâtre, ressemblant à une coulée de lave refroidie. Pour fondre de tels murs de granite, une température comprise entre 1100 et 1300° C est nécessaire et doit être combinée à un procédé de combustion lente. Des vestiges d'enceintes vitrifiées ont été découverts dans plusieurs pays d'Europe dont en France, en Écosse, en Norvège et en Hongrie. Diverses théories ont été proposées pour expliquer la formation des murs vitrifiés. Quelques exemples en Mayenne : Châteaux de la Courbe, Sainte-Suzanne, etc.

Lade was a fictitious character and the book is ascribed to French author Abbe Prevost, possibly drawing material from several legitimate sources.
