This book "contains over one hundred pictures selected from the more than three thousand Shahn photographs in the collection of the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard.a comprehensive selection of Shahn's early photographs taken during the initial years of the Depression in New York City-prison studies in 1934-35 at several penal institutions and a prime selection of photographs from his increasingly famous work for the Farm Security Administration. Many of these pictures have never been reproduced." This medium-sized oblong hard cover book (10 ½ x 9 ½ inches 147 pages) was published by the Harvard University Press of Cambridge Massachusetts dated 1975 and the First Edition with the same date on title & copyright pages. The book is bound in dark brown cloth with black titles on the spine and protected by a pictorial dust jacket. There is a Foreword by Archibald MacLeish and a Preface by the Editor Davis Pratt. These are followed by the photographs which are simply and barely captioned. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The dust jacket shows some minor edge wear although there is a small 1-inch tear at the top left-hand edge of the front cover. The hard covers are pristine without bumping or any blemishes. Inside the book is unmarked and the interior pages and plates are clean and bright throughout. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.".
