BBC Music Magazine is a British monthly magazine that focuses primarily on classical music. Each edition comes together with an audio CD, often including BBC recordings of full-length works. The first issue appeared in September 1992. The magazine includes regular columns and reviews of new releases as well as several in depth feature articles by noted music writers. Each issue contains a CD featuring complete works by the greatest composers, performed by world-class artists and ensembles. This includes the audio CD "Symphony No. 2 (The Four Temperaments), Op. 16" composed by Carl Nielsen and performed by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Andrew Davis and "Symphony No. 5 in E Flat, Op. 82" composed by Jean Sibelius and performed by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Matthais Bamers. The magazine contains the following articles: "Hockney at the Opera" (David Hockney production of Die Frau ohne Schatten at Covent Garden) by Patrick O'Connor; Rebel with a Cause (Peter Maxwell Davies) by Michael White; Look North (Jean Sibelius and Carl Nielsen) by Andrew Davis; "Sibelius at Home: 50 years of inspiration" by Michael White; "Denmark on disc" (reviews of new Danish recordings) by Anthony Burton; "Recorded Reputations: Elisabeth Soderstrom from the heart" by Alan Blyth; "Composer of the Month: Henry Purcell" by Michael Burden; "Building a Library: Acis and Galatea" (George Frideric Handel) by George Pratt; "Starter Collection" (recommendations from the classical repertoire) by Brian Kay; "Which Instrument?" "Staying with my newest thematic grouping- about photography and photographers I am pleased to offer: "The Photographic Eye of Ben Shahn" edited by Davis Pratt. Since I think of Shahn as a dramatic realist painter I was surprised to find a book about his work as a social documentary photographer. Perhaps you know better but herewith a few excerpts from the flap of the dust jacket about this book. This book "contains over one hundred pictures selected from the more than three thousand Shahn photographs in the collection of the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard.a comprehensive selection of Shahn's early photographs taken during the initial years of the Depression in New York City-prison studies in 1934-35 at several penal institutions and a prime selection of photographs from his increasingly famous work for the Farm Security Administration. Many of these pictures have never been reproduced." This medium-sized oblong hard cover book (10 ½ x 9 ½ inches 147 pages) was published by the Harvard University Press of Cambridge Massachusetts dated 1975 and the First Edition with the same date on title & copyright pages. The book is bound in dark brown cloth with black titles on the spine and protected by a pictorial dust jacket. There is a Foreword by Archibald MacLeish and a Preface by the Editor Davis Pratt. These are followed by the photographs which are simply and barely captioned. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The dust jacket shows some minor edge wear although there is a small 1-inch tear at the top left-hand edge of the front cover. The hard covers are pristine without bumping or any blemishes. Inside the book is unmarked and the interior pages and plates are clean and bright throughout. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.".
