Cercherò di spiegare perché tale fenomeno è riemerso nel cristianesimo occidentale dopo secoli di relativo oblio e affronterò l'argomento dal punto di vista antropologico, storico, filosofico, spirituale e psicologico. Nel testo troveranno spazio i pareri di esorcisti, psicologi, psichiatri, antropologi, filosofi e teologi, infine sono state incontrate anche alcune persone possedute e ormai "liberate". Ho cercato di compiere questo lavoro con rigore scientifico ma anche con un sano rispetto del mistero, cosciente del fatto che alcune delle manifestazioni osservate e documentate vanno oltre le attuali conoscenze della scienza.
