Published by the Farnham Chamber of Commerce in 1949, this was the fourth edition, in addition to the lavishly illustrated introduction to this historic town there are advertisements to retailers, businesses and commercial operations in the post war period. Its purpose was to present Farnham as the unique residential centre, equipped with all the amenities and corporate life of a modern community, in a setting of good modern and ancient architecture, and surrounded by country of the finest scenic beauty. There is a fold out map tipped in to the rear endpaper This copy is from the library of Robert Washington Oates and bears his heraldic book plate to the obverse of the front cover and his embossed address and library stamp to the f.e.p. There is a hand written receipt from the publisher to Mr R. W. Oates dated August 1952 tipped in to the r.e.p. Robert Washington Oates (1874-1958) was born in London and educated in Belgium and Germany. He served in the First World War, and at the same time amassed a considerable fortune through his financial interest in a firm of industrial chemists. After the war he beame an antique dealer, gaining an international reputation in the antiquarian book-trade. In 1954 Oates was instrumental in securing Gilbert White's home 'The Wakes' in Selborne, Hampshire, as a permanent memorial to the naturalist and author. There he also established the Oates Memorial Museum and Library, which commemorated two members of his own family, his cousin Captain Lawrence Oates (1880-1912), a member of the Scott's Antarctic Expedition and his uncle, Frank Oates (1840-1875 who was one of the first Europeans to see the Victoria Falls. At the time, the library was reported to amount to 40,00 books. Ref ZZZ 2.
