J.C. Dahl (1788-1857) spent many years from the 1820s living in Dresden, and that experience is the focus of this National Gallery, Oslo, exhibit from 1980. Dresden was one of the capitals of the Romantic movement, with an architecture virtually unchanged since the 18th century, and this is strongly reflected in DahlÆs German influence. Weder die Entstehungsgeschichte, noch die Frage nach dem künstlerischen Entwurf und seiner Ausführung waren jedoch aufgeklärt. Die Autoren der vorliegenden Monographie des Triumphbogens bieten aufgrund einer erneuten kritischen Sichtung der Dokumente und einer erstmaligen umfassenden photographischen Dokumentation eine weitgehende Lösung dieser Probleme. Es geht ihnen jedoch vor allem um eine inhaltliche Deutung des Monumentes. Der Triumphbogen erweist sich in der Analyse als Instrument einer dynastischen Familienpolitik, die die Sukzession von Alfonsos natürlichem Sohn Ferrante auf dem Thron von Neapel sichern sollte. Der Bogen stellt eine intensive Auseinandersetzung mit heterogenen Vorbildern der Antike dar. Das Rezeptionsverhalten dieser Phase der Renaissance gegenüber der Antike wird auf neue Weise beleuchtet. Für die Künstlergeschichte dürfte sich die Klärung der bisher sehr umstrittenen Anteile von Pietro da Milano und Francesco Laurana als besonders wichtig erweisen, da ein neuer Ausgangspunkt für eine Prüfung der Quattrocento-skulptur in Dalmatien und Sizilien gewonnen wird.
