Operations Research beschäftigt sich mit der mathematischen Analyse technischer und wirtschaftlicher Probleme, die oft von Unsicherheiten geprägt sind. In vielen Fällen können diese Unsicherheiten durch Schätzungen oder erwartete Werte behandelt werden. Es gibt jedoch Probleme, bei denen der Zufall eine zentrale Rolle spielt, und der Zufallsfaktor kann nicht ignoriert werden. In solchen Fällen müssen wahrscheinlichkeitstheoretische oder stochastische Methoden angewendet werden, die sich häufig mit dynamischen, zeitlichen Abläufen befassen und somit in den Bereich der stochastischen Prozesse fallen. Die Erneuerungstheorie und die Theorie der Markoff-Ketten bilden die grundlegenden Instrumente zur Lösung stochastischer Probleme. Wichtige Anwendungen finden sich in Warteschlangensystemen und der dynamischen Optimierung. Die numerische Behandlung dieser Probleme ist von praktischer Bedeutung, wobei Simulations- und Monte-Carlo-Methoden umfassende Ansätze bieten. Der Fokus liegt nicht auf einer vollständigen Darstellung, sondern auf einer Einführung in die wesentlichen Gedankengänge der jeweiligen Problemkreise. Eine kurze Einführung in die Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie wird bereitgestellt, die die wichtigsten Ergebnisse zusammenfasst, wobei die Beweise größtenteils weggelassen wurden. Leser, die bereits mit der Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie vertraut sind, können dieses Kapitel überspringen.

It is an interdisciplinary field, connecting computer science with many other disciplines such as psychology, sociology and the arts.
