Mai 1937 in Freiburg im Breisgau) ist ein deutscher Historiker, der die Geschichte des frühen und hohen Mittelalters erforscht. Vor allem arbeitet er über das Zeitalter der Ottonen, die italienischen Stadtkommunen und die Schriftkultur im Mittelalter. Keller lehrte von 1982 bis zu seiner Emeritierung im Jahr 2002 als Professor für mittelalterliche Geschichte an der Westfälischen Wilhelms-Universität Münster. Eine besonders fruchtbare Zusammenarbeit ergab sich dort mit seinem Kollegen Gerd Althoff. Mit ihren Arbeiten haben Keller und Althoff entscheidend zum Ansehen Münsters in der internationalen Mediävistik beigetragen. Kellers Forschungen üben seit den 1980er Jahren erheblichen Einfluss auf die deutsche und internationale Mediävistik aus und führten zu einer Neubeurteilung der früh- und hochmittelalterlichen Königsherrschaft. . Werk: Keller legte über 150 Veröffentlichungen vor. Bedeutend sind seine Arbeiten zu Grundlagen und Erscheinungsformen ottonischer Königsherrschaft, über Adel und städtische Gesellschaft in Italien, über Umbrüche in der Salier- und Stauferzeit und über die Frühzeit des alemannischen Herzogtums. Seit 1975 arbeitete er eng mit Gerd Althoff zusammen, einem Schüler von Kellers Mentor Karl Schmid.
