Fictionalized - with dialogue and some characters - but obviously heartily researched, Robert Devoy is Sosey's account of the incident of October 18, 1862, in Palmyra, Missouri, when ten Confederate prisoners were shot (by Federal prisoners)in retaliation for the presumed murder of a local Union man. For this act, General John McNeil became known as the "Butcher of Palmyra" and was denounced in newspapers both in the Union states and in other countries.
