It is doubtful that the most creative fiction writer could have ever conjured collectively the cast of characters that inhabited Northeastern Oklahoma. They began arriving a century before Oklahoma became a state, developing a new nation replete with laws and an education system dubbed the "Athens of the West." Although divided in their loyalties, they fought a Civil War then overcame the most heinous crime era in American history. These "Pathfinders" included explorers, Religious men of the cloth, intellectuals, soldiers of fortune and lawmen fearlessly pursuing desperate criminals. All held one trait in common, a commitment to succeed in their endeavors and they set the bar high. Little wonder then that following generations from this region the artists, entrepreneurs and sports figure have excelled world-wide. Their heritage would permit nothing less. The history of Northeastern Oklahoma is a gift that just keeps giving, not only the chronological sequence of events but the anecdotal stories as well. As evidenced by archeological studies, prehistoric tribes enjoyed the region for centuries, then disappeared. Although Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto came near to Oklahoma in western Arkansas, it was a Frenchman, Claude du Tisne, who in 1519 was the first white man documented in the region, seeking a trade route to the Spanish in the southwest. After the founding of Arkansas Post in 1685, a plethora of French trappers and traders saturated the area and two centuries later the Western Cherokee followed by the Eastern Band carved out a new nation. Within twenty years the combined Cherokee tribes had developed a body of governing laws and organized an education system dubbed "The Athens of the Southwest." Then following a seemingly endless sequence of horrific events, including the American Civil War and three decades of lawlessness, the region was reconfigured by the Dawes Commission. In a testament to resiliency, in more recent decades it has re-emerged as a well functioning sovereign nation. This book is composed of 120 articles chronicling events that occurred in Northeastern Oklahoma, the Cherokee Nation, its people and their communities. This item is printed on demand. A century before Oklahoma became the 46th state, Lieutenant James Wilkinson met with Osage chief Cashasegra at the confluence of the Arkansas, Grand and Verdigris rivers, later known as The Three Forks, the cradle of Oklahoma. Soon the Osage were pushed out by thousands of Cherokees relocated by the United States government to Indian Territory in Northeastern Oklahoma. A new Cherokee Nation was born. Internal strife developed first as a result of tribal disagreement over the Treaty of New Echota, followed by devastation from the American Civil War and then a period of unprecedented lawlessness. Despite the chaos the citizenry formed a democratic government, established the first school system west of the Mississippi and developed a system of laws as the economy improved until the nation was finally absorbed into what became the State of Oklahoma. 1806 describes the development of these events, relating anecdotes that involve some of the prominent personalities and describing communities and cities that merged into the early years of the 20th century.
