Añadir al carritoHardcover. First American Edition. At some point, long ago, this copy has had some professional restoration but I am not sure how much. The original leather spine containing a black rectangular box with a gilt lettered title has been laid down on a cloth binding with reinforcement at top and bottom of spine. The endpapers appear to be original and the book is square with a secure binding. I think newer cloth covers have been placed over an original quarterbound leather binding, though the leather spine was preserved. There is a light musty odor from storage but overall this is a solid copy. Some wear to edges and corners. See scan. Overall this copy is G+. ; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 422 pages; When this planter's guide was published in the US, planters in the South still owned slaves.

Añadir al carrito8vo. pp. xlviii, 518, [2]ads. 7 engraved plates (incl. frontis. portrait of the author). A nice copy in original blind & gilt-stamped cloth (spine sunned, light foxing to plate margins & neighbouring leaves). Inscribed on behalf of the author's daughter on half-title. Third Edition. With a memoir of the Author, and his last additions and improvements. Steuart developed a particular method for transporting and transplanting large ornamental trees, which was used successfully throughout Great Britain although it proved to be impractical in America because of the climate. Sir Walter Scott enthusiastically reviewed the present work in the Quarterly when it was first published in 1828, and noted in his journal: "Sir Henry is a sad coxcomb, and lifted beyond the solid earth by the effect of his book's success. But the book well deserves it." cfRaphael, An Oak Spring Sylva, 44.

Añadir al carritohardcover. Condición: very good. Edinburgh, Blackwood &c 1828. Octavo, uncut in original cloth backed boards, printed spine label; [8],xxii,473pp & publisher's list, 5 plates, the frontispiece double page. A little spotting of the plates. First edition; not a rare book but a pretty outstanding copy and not unimportant in the history of landscape. Steuart sits for the most part in the mainstream of the picturesque though he was savaged for his advocacy of the oval and circle as a natural form - which hearkens back to earlier platonic ideals. I'm told this slip of judgment was excised from later editions. Where his influence is important is in his practical advice, drawn from his own work on his estate at Allanton, showing how the removal and replanting of large trees made feasible the re-ordering of entire landsapes. Re-ordering nature is of course nothing new but it had taken vast amounts of money, labour and, most important, time. Steuart's methods offered, comparatively, something close to instant gratification. *This item might cost more to post than quoted by abe.

On the front pastedown is the ownership signature of "Earl of Galloway." Steuart (1759-1836) was replying to Andrew Stuart's work, A Genealogical History of the Stuarts (1798); Stuart also wrote a reply to this work. Stuart had contended that as the royal line had failed with the descendants of Stewart of Darnley that the head of all Stewarts or Stuarts was Stuart of Castlemilk, and the he was a Stuart of that clan, and thus the male heir of the family. Sir Henry Steuart asserts the rightfulness of the hitherto uncontested claims of the lineage of the Earl of Galloway, and Galloway is mentioned numerous times in this book. The autograph on the front pastedown is probably that of John Stewart, Seventh Earl of Galloway (1736-1806), who acceded to the Earldom in 1773. He is also remembered as the object of some of Burns's satirical; verses.
