Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Good. 3 separate pamphlets on the same subject. The first: A Statement of the Evidence on which some Positions advanced in a Review, signed by G. Mc. and published in the last No. of the American Medical Recorder, were founded. 4 pages. A single folded sheet. The name John R. Coxe signed on the front cover. Likely John Redman Coxe, noted Philadelphia doctor and instructor at the Univ of PA. Somewhat crudely printed (out of square) with wear at the fold and some foxing. In this Statement, Dr. George McClellan supports his medical opinion that Dr. Gibson's review of an apparatus for setting a broken thigh bone was inaccurate and that the apparatus itself was not effective. In the statement, he mentions Dr. Gibson as well as Mr. Wright, who also attested to the utility of the device. ** The next pamphlet is A Statement of Facts by George McClellan. July 18, 1822. Self-published. 24 pages. Remains of leather on the spine, but currently no binding. Title page is the first page. The name Dr. Coxe signed on the first page. In this pamphlet, Dr. McClellan defends his medical position and also relates a hair-raising tale. Evidently, Mr. Wright (one of the men who attested to the thigh-brace that McClellan criticized) decided to pay a call on the doctor. He brought a friend named John Gwinn with him. They demanded an apology, which McClellan refused to give. Gwinn returned a second time, and again demanded an apology. McClellan refused, at which point Gwinn challenged him to a duel. McClellan then "struck him as if he had been a blackguard and a ruffian." The final pamphlet is A Narrative of Facts by John Gwinn. August 1822. 11 pages. Folded but not bound. Pages are nearly separate. Contains Gwinn's version of the same story, noting that McClellan struck him first. Also adding that the men men two other times on the street, that one meeting involved a beating with a cane and another just a scuffle. John Gwinn identifies himself as a Lieut. in the Navy. It is possible that this is the same John Gwinn III who went on to captain the legendary USS Constitution. A scarce and wonderful trio of pamphlets, with interesting association to noted Philadelphia physician. Please email with questions or to request photos.
