Hardcover. Condición: Very good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very good. Greg Mathieson (Author photograph) Ilustrador. Second printing [stated]. xiii, [3], 269, [3] pages. Illustrations. Jose A. Rodriguez Jr. (born October 21, 1948) is an American former intelligence officer who served as Director of the National Clandestine Service of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). He was the final CIA deputy director for operations (DDO) before that position was expanded to D/NCS in December 2004. Rodriguez was a central figure in the 2005 CIA interrogation videotapes destruction, leading to The New York Times Editorial Board and Human Rights Watch to call for his prosecution. Rodriguez joined the CIA in 1976 and served for 31 years. According to retired General Michael Hayden, "Jose built a reputation for leadership in the field and here at headquarters, and he guided some of the agency's greatest counterterror victories. He has done much to protect our country by strengthening its Clandestine Service." Much of his career was as an officer under the Directorate of Operations in the Latin America division, assigned to work in countries ranging from Peru to Belize. From 1994 to 1996, he worked under the guise of Military Attache at the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires. Over time, he was promoted to chief of station in Panama, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic, and subsequently chief of Latin America Division. In May 2002, Rodriguez was promoted to the post of Director of the Counterterrorism Center. The Counterterrorism Center brings together case officers, operators, analysts, and technologists to work on preventing terrorism. Rodriguez was responsible for driving the CIA operations and the targeting analysis necessary to uncover terrorists. An explosive memoir about the creation and implementation of the controversial Enhanced Interrogation Techniques by the former Chief Operations Officer for the CIA's Counterterrorism Center. While the American public is aware of the CIA's use of highly controversial enhanced interrogation techniques, few know the man who, in the wake of September 11, led all U.S. counterterrorism operations and oversaw the use of those procedures, procedures that obtained vital and timely intelligence and helped safeguard the nation from future attacks. Puerto Rican-born Jose A. Rodriguez, Jr., served the United States for twenty-five years as an undercover officer before bringing his wealth of field knowledge to the CIA's Counterterrorism Center; now, in this riveting account and fascinating life story, one of America's top undercover operatives reveals how hard measures have derailed terrorist activity targeting the U.S., and saved countless American lives. Fully disclosed here for the first time are the undercover operations and tactics implemented during the George W. Bush presidency, which were approved by the highest levels of the U.S. government, certified as legal by the Department of Justice, and supported by bipartisan leadership of congressional intelligence oversight committees. But as the shock of 9/11 faded, the support that the intelligence community enjoyed and deserved gave way to potentially dangerous political correctness. One by one, the tools needed to successfully fight terrorism were banished, and the men and women who volunteered to carry out our nation's orders in combating al-Qa'ida found themselves second-guessed, hamstrung, and investigated, including Rodriguez himself. In effect, the United States has chosen to willfully and unilaterally disarm itself in the war on terror. In Hard Measures, Rodriguez convincingly argues for the techniques used, and uncompromisingly details when these techniques were necessary, why they worked, and how, ultimately, they contributed to the capture of the world's most-wanted terror operatives, including Usama bin Ladin. From law school student to CIA recruit to his role as America's top spy, Rodriguez's full story is one of utmost importance, a rare, insider's look at an issue that demands attention. Above all, it's a reasoned, imperative, and fully informed case for hard measures, and an explosive and gripping account of the real war on terror-- where it's been and where it's headed. ***Terrorism has always been one of the toughest targets on which to collect intelligence. The secrets you want to steal frequently don't reside in computer systems, which can be hacked, or safes, which can be broken into, but in the inner recesses of a handful of individuals' minds. The cliché about intelligence work is that it is like working on a thousand-piece jigsaw puzzle but not having the box top to show you what the finished picture should look like. If only it were that easy. In fact, it is more like working on a million-piece puzzle with no box top, and having millions more random pieces that look like they might fit, but actually are from different puzzles altogether. It fell to us to make sense of the countless fragments of information and to take action on the chunks of the puzzle, which represented a real and growing threat to the United States and our allies.***from Hard Measures.

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Ashe, Terry (front jacket photograph; Mathieson, Greg E. (family photograph); Dingler, C. Linda (book design) Ilustrador. 1st Edition. Fine unread condition dark blue boards, navy blue cloth spine, and gold spine lettering contained in a very good condition non price-clipped color photographic dust jacket. Includes Author Dedication; Acknowledgments; Cast of Characters; Foreword; Postscript; Appendix and Index. Illustrated with three sections of black-and-white photographic plates. Signed and inscribed by the author, Oliver North, with blue ink at the center of the half title page. "For the first time, Oliver North tells the whole story of his life. In this candid, revealing book, the man who has been at the center of the controversy called "Iran-contra" details what he did and why he did it. With a cast of characters that includes William Casey, Ronald Reagan, Bud McFarlane, John Poindexter, and George Bush, Under Fire is an astonishing look at how Washington's wheels of power turn. When the story broke that the United States had secretly been selling arms to Iran, and when Attorney General Edwin Meese announced at a press conference that some of the profits from those sales had been funneled to the contras fighting the Sandinista government in Nicaragua, a firestorm erupted that engulfed the nation. Iran-contra threatened to topple a president, and it thrust a previously obscure Marine lieutenant colonel into the spotlight. To some, Oliver North was a national hero; to others, he was a villain. But no one could deny that he handled the scrutiny of the congressional hearings and his later trial with uncommon composure and dignity. Here is the Oliver North that the public has never before seen. Born in Texas and brought up in upstate New York, he writes that his childhood was like a Norman Rockwell painting. But the serenity was permanently shattered when he was shipped off to fight in Vietnam. Under Fire includes some of the most powerful writing ever published about that conflict. After the war and other assignments with the Marines, North was ordered to the National Security Council staff at the White House. There he became head of a secret counterterrorism group and participated in planning, with the CIA and other organizations, some of the most sensitive covert operations undertaken by the United States government in recent years. In Under Fire, Oliver North tells for the first time the inside story behind the headlines. Among other operations, he was involved in the interception of the hijackers who seized the Achille Lauro cruise ship and in the American bombing of Libya, and he gives his unique perspective on those dramatic events. He also writes of the importance of his family and his enduring faith, which have seen him through the toughest times. Under Fire is truly an American story, for only in America could this saga have unfolded. Compellingly readable, crackling with human drama and extraordinary revelations, this book is destined to be discussed and debated for years to come." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Signed by Author(s).
