Publisher's combined black and blue cloth, gilt front cover and gilt-lettered spine (ex-library copy with usual marks and stamps but clean and firm, binding slightly soiled). Ernst Philip Goldschmidt (1887-1954 ) was an Austrian-British antiquarian bookseller, scholar, and bibliophile widely regarded as one of the most learned figures in the rare book trade in the first half of the 20th century. The book includes Goldschmidt's 1953 Sandars Lectures focused on the history of the first printing press in Cambridge and how it fit into the broader context of European printing history, examining the foundation, development, and significance of that press within the early modern book trade and intellectual networks. He placed Cambridge's early printing activity in relation to other European centres of printing and showed how it contributed to the intellectual life of England and the Continent.
